The Maize at the Pumpkin Patch

Great experiance. Kids loved it and we had fun. Only thing is we waited around to pay for ever before someone came. And no one at the gift or coffee shop seemed to be able to get someone to come out.

Maize is fun! If you’re in the area, definitely an Oregonian experience. Paths will get muddy if it’s been raining. Maze is split into 2 parts. First part was fairly easy, 2^nd part was too hard! Haha. Staff is nice :)

Beware there is no haunted maze this year; very friendly staff

Amazing food, everyone is so nice, but your pumpkins and fall deco here they had a lot to choose from plus food and fun. Not to mention if your single I got hit on a couple times so epicness it was fun haha maze was nice loads of people but nothing to crazy

It’s the original Maize on Sauvies Island. Professionally maintained and run. I have to admit some bias as an island resident. The Pumpkin Patch and Maize is quality! Good community supporters and neighbors.
The main maize is so much fun early season, when the pathways are dry and the corn is green and creaking as it grows. As the nights get darker earlier, the maze gets scarier! I like the non haunted ma e better as I don’t like crowds.
However the haunted maze is better and better each year. The Maize team of haunters gets craftier each season. I still hate the chainsaw guy. He gets me every time.
So go enjoy the good farming fun, and keep in mind … It’s made in a field of corn, if it’s been raining… There will be mud. If it’s s sunny dry weekend… It will be very busy. So roll up your jeans, wear some rubbers and have a good time!

The Maize at the Pumpkin Patch is SO fun and a fall favorite for my family.
(Beware: There is another maize next door at can make getting to this original Maize confusing. That happened to my parents who were joining us last Friday. These guys are the second maize on the left on NW Gillihan Rd if you are coming from the bridge. You have to go past Bella Organic to get here. We’ve been to both, but we appreciate the family friendly vibe at the original Maize. It feels more like a real farm too.)
This one is the original and it shows in the character of the place. We just love chilling out under the big red tent after getting lost in the corn maze. There is a haunted maze too which is scary, as well as artistic. The farm atmosphere is just awesome is the fall! Thank you to the staff and owner, who were so friendly on my family’s visit this year :) ALSO, the Pumpkin Patch here grows the pumpkins on site and they are beautiful! The free hay ride is a must.
PS. Bring boots if it’s raining. We were all happy to have our boots.

This review is mostly for the two (plain and haunted) corn mazes.
The regular corn maze is decent for a family trip with your younger kids. The laminated passports have some good trivia on them, and the CornNundrums are punny. Not so much in 2013, but my last trip on 10÷18÷14 seriously puts a damper on my enthusiasm to come back. While in the regular corn maze, I saw a single «Corn Cop» walking around. I bring this up because there were multiple teenagers running, slipping, and splashing mud on other groups and being blatently negligent to the rules. I could tell the parents were upset about these kids ruining an otherwise run visit. I think they just need more workers inside and maybe even some that are full-​time in the maze.
The haunted maze was very scary (don’t bring children under 11ish) when I went in 2013, but this year was very bland. The few good «ghouls» were the butcher and the chainsaw guys. I think part of it was a few spots that were bottle-​necking groups together, and it turned into either scaring a few people at the start or not scaring anyone because we all saw you. The biggest culprit was the house that was pitch black until a light would flicker and you could move a few feet. On the brightside, the first chainsaw man was kind enough to ask pardon before pull-​starting his chainsaw when my girlfriend was walking by. Such a gentleman: D

This place is great! fun for the whole family. Great stuff to see and Pumpkins! Nice employees clearly marked instructions and the best Corn maze we have ever been to. The haunted maze looks like a ton of fun.

I am a corn maze junkie!!! Every year I do all the corn mazes in the Portland area and this is by far my favorite one, year after year. Mud or no mud, it’s all good, but this year we managed to do it before it was all muddy. I have never tried the haunted corn maze, but his year I finally got the time off of work to try it. I’m so EXCITED!!!

This place is GREAT! It was my first corn maze ever and my friends and I had a wonderful time. The owners were so friendly and explained to us the maze process. LOVED the corn-​nundrums. They were witty and we enjoyed every one of them.
It was my first trip to Portland and I’m so glad I didn’t miss out on the fun!

This place is perfect for celebrating autumn and Halloween!
Some friends and I came here for the Haunted Maze. Upon our arrival, we were told that it would be an hour and a half long wait. However, we were given the option of paying an extra $ 5 to go to the front of the line. Although it was clearly their way of making more money, we went ahead and splurged the extra cash and bopped up to the front of the line. I’m glad we did this, as the line was long, crowded and full of rambunctious (and possibly drunk) teens.
This was my first time at a haunted maze! There were some spooky surprises here and there and the fact that it was so dark made the experience even more terrifying. I appreciated the good scares! I also appreciated the fact that the actors did not grab my friends or me or try to hold us.
I would recommend the maze to anyone who enjoys a good scare. Go to the haunted maze at night. It is dark and creepy and (spoiler alert) without a flashlight makes it that much creepier.
Parents, do not bring small children (or kids who get easily startled and/​or don’t like the scary stuff) into the haunted maze. There was a family walking behind us with a young child who was hysterically crying the entire time. There are a lot of creepy monsters in this maze (e.g., zombies, creepy ghosts and even a scary thing with a loud chainsaw toward the end) and, although they won’t touch you, they will jump out and scare you.
This was a fun experience and I’m planning on returning next year! :)

When my date suggested that we do the corn maze while we were out picking pumpkins I agreed, but figured it was just a silly things for kids. It was so much harder than I expected! And by harder, I mean so fun! Spend an hour or so wandering through the maze, answering trivia, and just enjoying yourself. Fun for kids and adults alike. The corn trivia is hard, but by the end you’ve learned more about corn than you ever thought you wanted to.

«The Maize» (
) is a franchise, like Subway: each location is independently owned and operated, but maintains brand standards. Feeling bitter about the cookie cutter corporate beast overtaking your Halloween escapades? Take a deep breath and prepare for quality checked fun.
The Good:
— Whether you chose the Haunted maze or the Maize maze, you receive color coded bracelets. You can leave and reenter as you please, repeating the mazes multiple times, if you wish. This helps if you have a potty emergency just as you enter… You won’t lose anything by ducking out and getting back in line later. The Pumpin Patch may not officially approve of reentry, but it’s totally possible (just act like it’s your first time in).
— The Maize Maze is formed from strong, tall corn (I’m 5’9″ and it towered over me). Metal posts and plastic mesh keep people on the path where weaker stalks are more vulnerable.
— The dirt path is not too muddy, nor dangerously pitted. It is safe to bring young children (6+) through this maze.
— After dark, lighting is visible from the entrance, two small bridges over the corn, and from the road, but not enough to break the October mood.
— The maze is completed in two parts. The end of the first part ends in the same tent where you began. You can leave for a potty break and reenter to complete. Or just take a rest with friends at the provide picnic tables.
— For 3 years in a row (personal experience), during October, fog has settled across Sauvie Island after 7:30p.m. It makes the non-​haunted «maize» maze much more spooky, without forced horror cliches.
–The ticket price is only $ 7 for adults (2013), much cheaper than other October events.
–Unlike previous years, 2013 has unveiled extended hours for food vendors and frivolity. Now there are elephant ears, hamburgers and fries, and wrappafrappacappuchinos (coffee with lots of sugar) available after 8:30 p.m.
–Despite the large crowds and lines, getting though the Maize is swift and painless, but not TOO swift. I saw several dozen people get lost in loops.
The Bad:
–Toilets are porta-​potties with HORRIBLE lighting. (Ladies, squat at your own precarious risk… and bring your own hand sanitizer.)
–This place provides quality fun, so the crowds are large and mostly comprised of ages 12 — 17. (My ghouls and I, clothed in all black, hoodies up, like to walk silently, side by side, through the Maize and startle hysterical ‘tweens… they scare themselves)
I really love this place. Even with large crowds, it never fails to leave me with a full dose of Fall spirit.
On Saturday, this farm is open most of the day, and the Haunted Maze opens at 7:00 p.m. Outbound traffic is dense between 7 p.m. and 8p.m., as the day trippers with their young children leave the parking lots. This frees up a lot of spots next to the main entrance, so you don’t need to park in the overflow lot with the bus groups.
POSTSCRIPT: I’ve only been in the Haunted Maze once, and have listened to other people’s opinions since… It’s like every other haunted house/​maze in the greater Portland area: You’re packed in like cattle, never more than an arms length away from the person in front of you. You won’t be scared, just startled and laughing hysterically to hide your surprise. These cattle call attractions can be fun, but only if you go in with a sense of humor and camaraderie, where you are willing to laugh at yourself for jumping at the touch of a fake rubber spider. Sometimes, the best part is bonding with strangers… Just ask that 16-​yr-​old stranger who dug his ever-​so-​brotastic fingernails into my shoulders at Frightown last year.

My best friend once called me on a blustery day in college and said, «Katrina, we need to go explore the wind.» So without further direction, we hopped in my red pickup named Pete and drove around for hours amidst Yamhill County farmlands, taking pictures, high-​stepping it away from garter snakes, and eventually ending up wandering in a cornfield, grinning in quiet awe. That’s when I knew for sure he was my kin.
So of course I love coming out to The Maize. Sometimes I’ll go several times in a season.
Timely note: This year’s maze is HARD!
It probably didn’t help that we went during MONSOON @)!# (that’s 2013 in CAPS, btw), but no, really: they’ve taken the theme of «Keep Portland Lost» to heart this year, and are pulling no punches. You have been warned.
Here are the things I enjoy:
Wandering among ears of corn, eating ears of corns and elephants, purchasing bushels of vegetables I won’t end up cooking, taking the hayride out to the pumpkin patch and never being able to decide on a pumpkin, gathering a big bouquet of sunflowers, getting a big whiff of hay in barn & fixating on the chickens, and if we get lucky, catching a ride on the crazy cow train!
Less than half an hour from home is this farm-​fresh wonderland where not only can you ride on a bale of hay, you can take one home with you! No room for a full bale in your apartment? No worries! They have gourds and colorful corns and mini bales sized just right for the little horse attached to your curbside corral.
There are other corn mazes on this island. To my knowledge, this one is the original one, and the people are super nice, so I remain loyal.
It’s not for everyone, I know. Tromping around in the mud, breathing in farm smells, traveling half an hour to buy vegetables & honey, mixing it up in the farm-​going people parade… I respect it if it’s not your thing. There’s a reason you live in a city.
But for me? There are reasons I live in THIS city, and the Corn Maize option to explore the wind at a hat’s drop is one of my very, very favorites.

Waiting in line for two hours in front of four drunk 18 year olds made this excursion to the haunted maize way less pleasant than it had to have been. At one point one of them vomited in line without excusing herself to do it away from the line of people. That seemed bad… Until we got into the tented portion of the line where she urinated behind us. All the while, trying to skip ahead. On two different, they were confronted by people for cutting the line. The staff also got involved, and told them they could «smell alcohol on their breaths.» However, these people were not asked to leave in spite of their disruption and the fact that they kept throwing their beer cans on the ground.
My greatest issue with the maize was actually not the drunk teenagers, but the line itself. Folks could opt to pay $ 5 more to get into an express line that would allow you to cut ahead to the front of the line, thus slowing down the line even more for those of us who were waiting. Shame on you Pumpkin Patch for being so greedy. This «express line» also caused confusion when getting into the tent as it appeared to merge with the regular line, thus causing many people to skip ahead into the maize rather than waiting in the line that wrapped around inside the tent.
We originally had several more people behind us, but as we were waiting in line inside the tent, we all noticed how the back of the line just sort of disappeared, leading us to conclude that we were in fact now waiting behind several people who arrived much later than us.
All in all, the inside of the maize was fun… Definitely scary just to be wandering a corn field like that at night. I wish they had a better system of entry, like numbers or an exact time to show up and go inside, that way families and folks like me wouldn’t have to be subjected to vomit and urination, as well as cigarette smoke… They really should have enforced a no smoking rule, at least inside the tented portion of the line.

If you want farm fresh produce, a corn maize and some yummy fall snacks this is the place to go. We have been coming here for the last 5 years and have never had a bad time. They have the best corn on the cob on the island and you can get a giant caramel apple here for about $ 3.50. In addition to the huge produce selection, they also have beautiful U-​cut flowers. If your brave try the haunted maze at night, and if you can pay in advanced to avoid waiting in the long line for tickets. If you have kids, make sure you take them on the cow train and on the hay ride to go get a pumpkin from the field.

Duuuuude! I love being pleasantly surprised!
Today we went to the Portlandia Maize, because I don’t recall ever being taken to a pumpkin patch — in my whole life. My mom will say I’ve been, but a picture is worth a thousand words and I don’t have a picture.
A corn maize/​maze on top of that sounded really cool.
Upon arriving, I was super happy to see that we would get 2 corn maize adventures, a hay ride and could to play atop (and below) a hay giant stack. Add to that the market and gift shop, as well as the many food booths, and I was stoked!
First, we did a corn maize. It seemed really easy and I was disappointed, until we got really lost. Oops! I judged a book by it’s cover. After spending 30 minutes trying to get out of the 1^st maize, I was parched and needed to buy a $ 2 bottle of water. While that sounds spendy, it isn’t…considering it was hot out and I’d just gotten a panicked work-​out. The 2^nd maize was equally tough, but we followed these 2 genius 10 year old girls — who’d discovered that someone had knotted some corn stalk leaves every 20 feet or so, which eventually led us out. I can see why this whole process would be really scary in the dark.
Next, we went on the hay ride. We had a blast but hay makes bare skin itch like crazy — so don’t wear shorts! Trust me on this one.
After that, we scaled the hay bail tower and I climbed through the tunnel underneath, risking a panic attack (I’m claustrophobic) because I was «Double Dog Dared».
To reward myself for all the extreme activity (running, scaling, climbing, crawling) I bought myself the best damn caramel apple ever! We’re talking a half inch of caramel! Yummmmy!!!
I had so much fun, I can only imagine what the place would be like through a child’s eyes.

The Corn Maize at the Pumpkin Patch is a family tradition that we enjoy every fall season. The maze is always fun and challenging, then off to the Big Red Animal Barn, cow train, hayride and finally a big pumpkin to take home.
