I really hope to review the food here eventually. After a whirlwind morning of dropping kids off at school, biking to work just in time for two back-to-back meetings, I slipped out for a much needed energy boost of something that is not bread. I need a boost, not a nap! Avocado smoothie sounded like just the thing I needed. But I arrived to a closed up cart with a big sign stating the hours 8AM-6PM. It was 10:15. Thanks for nothing.

I decided to try this cart for breakfast, I am always looking for a good breakfast and thought this might be a great location for something quick and tasty. I got the McNada breakfast empanada and the Orange Julio smoothie. The empanada crust was just right, the filling was so-so mainly just eggy with a little seasoning. I wanted one of the avocado based smoothies but there avocados weren’t ripe yet. It is possible to get ripe avocado’s daily so that was disappointing. The price point was way too high for my budget, it was $ 9 for a very small empanada(about ½ the size of a standard fruit pie… maybe about 4 bites) and a very small smoothie. With the prices I was expecting something larger. It was an alright cart but not impressive, and not within budget.

The Fix is a relatively new cart serving empanadas from traditional(–ish?) to more creative. I tried El Jefe, a savory beef empanada with chimichurri. The filling had a slight hint of sweetness an the chimichuri’s tartness and garlic balanced the filling nicely. Also tried the Guru, a sweet coconut-almond empanada with a subtle cinnamon spice flavor. The crusts were also well done, at once flaky and golden brown, and soft enough to bite through. The Bird of Fire(chicken, jalapenos, cheese) and the Lambada(plantains, black beans, onion, garlic) also looked good, but they’ll have to wait for another day. The cart is at the far east edge of the north side of the 5th and Oak cart pod. Or look for their sign sticking up above the cart. I’ll definitely be back.
