Some neighborhoods lack sidewalks because they were not built by the original homebuilders in the day. Most people don’t know the City does not build the original sidewalks or streets. The original builders do, paid for in the purchase price of the home. Ongoing the homeowner maintains the sidewalk and right of way, the City maintains the curb, street and drains. Portland’s big secret is that the Southwest is one of the most sidewalk-​poor areas of the city and most of the streets are substandard — no curbs or drains.
The SW has hills. Some of the only routes for foot travel are alongside cars and trucks in the roadway. That’s where children walk to school or people walk to shops.
SW Trails is an all volunteer group that builds foot trails to get around in SW. They are entirely funded by donation and all the work is done by volunteers.
Those trails provide safe routes and some great hiking connections through the woods too.
Their maps will be handy for any Portlander who wants a trail hike, and they are essential to SW residents and students getting to school or shops.
Their website currently redirects for some maps to City of Portland website. Under pressure from neighbors, some trails on public land have been removed from city maps. But if you contact the group they can fill you in.
