One of our friends works for an independent book store in CT so we had to stop by and check this bookstore out. The store is stocked to the brim with books, decorations and fun gifts! I love the mix of local items and mainstream items; honestly a very good mix of items and the prices were not marked up. The kids section is wonderful here, we ended up leaving with a lot of books in the bargain bin. I found the coolest stickers and fun toys in that section. I also found these amazing kid sticker books where they can dress up the dolls on each page, definitely something I have never seen before. I can’t wait to give them to my niece and nephew! Their Christmas section had a great assortment of cards, notebooks, decoration and fun advent calendars. During the afternoon on the weekends it can get very hectic in here, I would recommend coming earlier or later in the day to avoid the crowds. Staff is super friendly and very helpful with book suggestions. Come check them out if you are in the area, otherwise you can order online!

We stopped into Sherman’s on a gloomy Saturday afternoon while visiting Portland and checking out the area. As an avid reader, I am a fan of all things having to do with books so I was totally excited to check this place out. The book store is a fairly decent size with a vast selection of books in many categories. Not only do they sell books, but I noticed lots of little knick-knacks, Maine souvenir’s, gift wrapping, cards, stationary, candles, jewelry, children’s toys, etc. The prices seemed reasonable, maybe a bit on the high side depending on what you’re looking at, but it is a locally owned shop selling items from local artists. If you’re in Portland, stop by Sherman’s to pick up that new book you’ve been wanting to check out or buy a gift for that special someone.

Awesome bookstore. Great selection of a wide variety of titles, friendly staff, and tons of toys for me to wish I were buying. If you’re going to support a real bookstore, let’s keep this one.

Sherman’s is a lovely store and offers so much more than books. They have a wide selection of gift items as well including several items that are crafted locally. It is one of my go-to shops when I need the perfect present for a birthday, baby shower, Xmas gift, etc. Their staff is always knowledgeable and friendly. Their selection is good for a small local book store but perhaps not as vast as Longfellow Books up the road. Their customer loyalty program is also very appealing and is worth the extra card in your wallet if you frequent the store. I’ll happily continue to be a repeat customer at Sherman’s and you should too!

Came in w a difficult question and Chelsea had wonderful smart friendly advice. So helpful I came back the next day for more advice. Stores like this are why independent bookstores are crucial – no computer could have recommended a literary comic novel or which Lewis and Clark history was most charming. Also: restaurant advice! Stop by and chat w them. Just the best!

Awesome book store with a great kids section. I was strolling around the kids section and got into a conversation with another bibliophile. I was looking for a good book about Maine for my daughter and she started showing me some other great books for kids. I was shocked at what she then did for me. She bought a book and left it at the front counter with instructions to give it to me. Amazing experience as the store clerk went along with it and even stalled me enough that I wasn’t told until the lady was well gone from the building. Today was one of the those blessed days in a great store. Back to the books which are great. They have a bargain section, plenty of Sandra Boynton’s books, metro play set, and a great staff. I bought my tourist Maine kid book here about fun with rhymes. They also have Good Night Maine here. Buy your touristy books here instead of the little tourist trap gift shops.

My girlfriend and I stopped into this bookstore during our recent trip to Portland, and I was shocked to see that it had no Unilocal entry(though it was already on Foursquare). I did some Googling tonight and found an article in the Portland Press Herald that writes about how the business just opened in April. This place definitely deserves a Unilocal entry, so I’m taking the initiative to add it. Both of us loved this book store. It’s not all that surprising that it’s new; the place looks great. Nice and clean, and good organization, with a section toward the front with recent arrivals, and on the wall to the right side, a section reserved for local writers and topics. Both my girlfriend and I, who were visiting Maine for the first time, picked up some local reads: I selected a novel from a Maine writer, and she purchased a memoir about a woman who moved to the Maine countryside in the 1930s and kept a journal. I liked the gifts around the shop and picked out a few postcards to mail to friends from home(I love mailing post cards, whether I’m on vacation or not). The employees I met were helpful and friendly. It’s the kind of place I see myself going back to. The store has a customer loyalty program which they offered to my girlfriend, which she had to turn down since we were only visiting. Now if only there was a Sherman’s in NYC!
