I wholeheartedly recommend Salt, Fire & Time’s broth. Why? The broth is traditionally prepared with locally produced, high quality ingredients. It is gelatinous and stored in glass. I like that the fact that each ingredient is very carefully sourced and as cliché as it may sound, made with love. I think our community is blessed to have ready made broth of this caliber available to us for convenience. I have also experienced Salt, Fire & Time’s customer service to consistently be very supportive of me as a customer.

Happy to be eating more and more Salt, Fire & Time products. I’m really liking the beef jerky, gives me burst of energy. As a mama chasing a high energy kid around, this is essential. To add a bit of decadent in my life, the coconut yogurt is devine. Rich and creamy with a bit of tang, is delightful with a bit of honey and some berries. And then you have the bone broths! What you will get from Salt, Fire & Time is high quality, thick, gelatinous broth; which is what you want. Can turn a soup cup into a nutritious meal! Interested in trying the Baby Broth in future. That sounds like it would be great for your teeth! Weston Price would certainly think so.

Disappointed in SF&T. I am a postpartum mama and for the past month I have been leaving messages to find out if they still carry fermented cod liver oil. My calls were not returned. Finally last week I got someone who said they were all out but she would find out if they were getting more. Still no word. Glad I didn’t decide to make the trip, baby in tow. The hours they are open are not times when I have access to the car. Bummed because I took their pregnancy nutrition class years ago and it was great and I have often referred to it as a resource for postpartum mamas.

A friend gave me some of Salt, Fire & Time’s beef jerky. As a long time devoted eater of grass fed beef jerky, I must say, theirs was the best I ever had. My husband and I polished it off in a few days and that was with restraint! Although I live in the San Francisco area, Salt, Fire & Time will be a must visit, the next time I am in Portland.

In need of heathy, quality, authentic food that you don’t have time to prepare/source yourself? Well, I sure am and Salt Fire and Time fits the bill! I have really liked everything I have ordered from them and I’ve tried almost everything they sell. It’s like having a friend who is a chef trained in traditional technique and getting to go over to their house to raid their pantry and freezer. A note on the Salmon they offer: I grew up on the coast of Northern CA, Humboldt County to be exact, and I always had fresh King/Chinook Salmon from friends that they gave me right off the boat and when not in season, freezer packs like SFT offers, so I have always been disappointed in the salmon I have paid for here in stores. No matter the vendor, it is never as fresh, there is always a slight fishy odor from store-bought that shouldn’t be present if the product it truly fresh. The salmon they sell is by far THEBEST I have ever purchased anywhere! As soon as I opened the pouch I knew it would be amazing because it has no smell. The fisherman really did catch it, fillet it and pack it right then and there. Of course, once cooked, it was so yummy. It cooked up so much better than the last stuff I bought even from New Seasons. The flavor is also remarkably clean and it is clear that this is a good catch. I also buy the broths, which can turn even the simplest meals into something nutritious and tasty. Just throw in some fresh miso, kale and other veggies and voila! I also love the coconut yogurt and eat it with their granola. The lemon curd was amazing, let’s see, the prune anise truffles are also fantastic, ooh and the lamb burgers with heart. Basically, everything is good, good for you and good for the whole system and they’re not at all preachy/elitist/off-putting, yet are very conscientious and dare I use the over-used word, «sustainable» in their kitchen. The products are not cheap, but not more expensive than what is to be expected. You definitely get what you pay for here. Besides, it’s your food – where one of your biggest expenses should be for the month. The food sold here is real, so it carries a real cost that reflects the value of the land, animals, resources, labor etc. that goes into making it, yet the the prices are fair. The processed foods in the stores and many restaurants don’t reflect the true cost of food production. Though, if you’re wanting to shop here in the first place and reading their reviews, you probably already know that. Bottom line: if you need some help in getting your nutrition on track or maintaining it and/or don’t have the time or aren’t really sure how to begin or where to start(damn near everyone falls into one of these), this is the place for you!

Salt Fire & Time is a community food phenomena with classes, dinners and take home hand crafted dishes, preserved foods and hard to find base ingredients. I met them when they helped out with the artists’ stock dinners. They are tucked into an old home in the far reaches of NW Portland. Maybe you aren’t set up at home to simmer bones and marrow with carrots and onions for 24 hours, but you can buy a quart from Salt Fire & Time and then get on with your cooking. They have refrigerated and frozen items like Moroccan soup. Tasty deserts too. Or how about a class on making your own fermented beverages? Or curing your own bacon? Foods for pregnancy? Their jewel is community brunches and dinner feasts, with ever changing seasonal menus. Details for each on their Facebook. They started as a community supported kitchen, with a seasonally changing food box weekly, like a CSA. They have adapted their model to a locally sourced walk in pantry with limited hours. They also participate in the Sunday Montavilla farmers’ market. So if you are interested in local food, of high quality, with a nice little community around it, check Salt Fire & Time.
