Looking for a place to attend Mass while visiting Portland, I came across Saint Sharbel’s. I am a Latin Rite Catholic, and preferential to the Traditional (Extraordinary Form) Liturgy. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any nearby Churches that offered the Traditional Mass, so I decided to check out my Maronite brethren for the first time.
Everything is in Arabic, English and Aramaic. For the most part it is completely sung, beautifully too, Arabic is a beautiful language. The Liturgy was a little sloppy, but I know that I tend to be over-​critical in this aspect. It was quite wonderful how many Altar servers they had, as well as a Maronite Brother, a Deacon and Subdeacon. According to their website they have a solid 50 families for a parish, and I can tell you the place was almost filled to capacity.
After Mass (or as they refer to it: Holy Mysteries) they happened to be having a Lebanese Food Festival. So I came for the Mass, but stayed for the food. It was delicious. Everyone that I talked to in the parish was very kind and welcoming.
I look forward to going again.
