We decided to give Roman Candle a try on a rainy winter night. It wasn’t super busy for 6:30 on a Saturday, which was just fine with us. The room is very rustic and large. There is one large communal table that spans almost the entire length of the restaurant. I love a communal table because it really forces you to interact and talk to people around you. We had a lovely conversation with the family across from us. We each ordered a piece of pizza, so we ended up with mushroom, sausage, and potato. The prices seemed a little high but it’s Roman style, meaning they serve you a pretty giant square of pizza along with some scissors to cut them. They are still a bit pricey, but in my opinion it was worth it. I didn’t care for the mushroom, it was very earthy. The potato was really good, it had a little picante kick to it and good texture. The sausage was my favorite, mainly because of the delicious marinara sauce. The sausage had great flavor too, but my 2 year old ate almost all of it. I think next time we will only order 2 pieces and maybe a salad. We ended up taking 4 squares home with us, so we got lunch out of it too. We will definitely be back to try breakfast, hello avocado toast, and probably lunch, and who am I kidding dinner too!

Greasy both the pastry and sandwich, the espresso was very bitter and the milk was not smooth. Hoped for better.

Best. Breakfast. Sandwich. Ever.(I was going to say«In Portland» but honestly, nowhere I’ve ever had can compete) I’ve been to Portland so many times but this was my first trip where we made a stop at Roman Candle. Everyone was really friendly and the atmosphere within the restaurant was great. Inviting, warm, everything you’d appreciate on a rainy day in Portland. I order the everything bun with egg, sausage and avocado. . I cannot wait until my next visit to Portland so I can return to Roman Candle, for reals.

Pizza was delish. Came on a wooden platter and the slice was a perfect size. I had the Bianca and would definitely order it again. The staff is nice and service is fast and friendly. Definitely a place that I’ll be visiting again soon!

Excellent place out on Division, a slice out of Italy with the long wooden communal dining table, excellent coffee, pizza sold by the square and freshest of meats. I got a cappucino and an Apollo creed. Excellent ingredients and fresh taste! Will head back there soon for a slice of their pizzas!

Didn’t realize avocado toast could be so fulfilling to my soul. Now I can never go back– mama’s little peppers shall always accompany my toast and avocados. The crusty bread, the zesty lemon, the fragrant garlic… I must have you. Who would have thought toast is something I can’t do properly at home? I have been shown up once again– damn you expensive restaurants!

Stopped in here one morning for some lattes and toasts. The lox toast and avocado toasts were very tasty. The latter had a great portion of avocado with drizzled olive oil and flaky salt(the good finishing salt). Their sweets are also great. We had this round crunchy bun looking thing with salt and it was OMG amazing. The ambiance is nice with a long beautiful wooden family style table. We observed people reading/writing, knitting, practicing Chinese with a tutor, and talking away. Nice spot!

Come here with your favorite people and order a slab. We got one with arugula on top. Massive thing served on a long wooden board with antique scissors to cut and serve. I almost finished the entire slab alone. Good beers on tap.

Okay. Things to try here: — Cappuccino — Any of their tarts — Duck egg on everything bun. Add-ons: avocado, sausage. The everything bun is my everything. I’m not the biggest fan of their pizzas, and a few items on their lunch menu are not as flavorful as I had imagined. But they have really cute restrooms.

Stopped by for a latte but didn’t get to try any food. The pizza looked good though. A casual place where you order at the counter and bus yourself. I would love to come back to have the pizza and bread.

This place is fantastic, stopped by to look at the menu and decided to stay. rarely I find baked good that are this amazing. The staff was super friendly and my favorite thing was the décor of the place! I mean top to bottom and all around the style of the place made me feel like I was in Europe. If I didn’t live in a different state I would come back right now! It took me so long to get a Unilocal and I forgot the name of one of the very helpful staff members…

Great place. Amazing food and kind staff. BUT the internet simply sucks. I always have to leave because even if I’m there for breakfast during a workday, I do sometimes need to get some work done requiring WiFi. I hope they can get this resolved because it has been ‘way bad’ for a rather long time.

Bread so spectacularly good you want to buy a plane ticket for friends on the East Coast, fly them here, and point at their bread saying this is why you should move here! Seriously though. Portland has a large number of excellent bakeries. I do not mean to imply they are not excellent. This place though has moved the bar above Ken’s and Grand Central baking. In particular Roman Candle has an Avocado Toast. So simple, so excellent, so unique. The perfect new breakfast thing. Combined with the atmosphere I highly recommend it. (The stars are for their bread alone as I am unfamiliar with their pizza or other offerings at this time)

Wine and pizza, casual and good! Stopped in here this weekend for a slice of pizza and some wine. They had some decently priced wines so we order a bottle of white. In the center of the restaurant is a big, long, wide table that goes the length of the entire place. Fun and different idea, good spot to go into with either a group, kids or a date. There are also some seats in the front and on the side. We ordered the potato pizza and the meat lovers. The crust was very italian and had the burned parts that my Italian boyfriend loves on the crust from back home in Italy, so I know I’ll take him sometime to give it a try. The potato pizza was very salty. I am a salt lover, but this was very overwhelming. The meat lovers was good and I would try the mushroom next time. Bianco pizza looked good as well. The servers were very nice and just kept our tab open when we said we wanted to start with wine and order pizza in a bit. When they bring your pizza out, they bring it on a wood platter and give you golden scissors to cut the pizza up with and plates. The scissor part is also very italian. At least in an italian home when you order or make pizza and eat your pizza at home, I knew a couple of families that would«slice» their pizza this way, so I found this pretty fun. They have baked goods that looked very nice as well. I didn’t fully read their menu but I did see that they had sugar and such for coffee– not sure if they do a good espresso but I would hope so– keeping it with the Italian theme, that’s most likely what they’re serving. A friend told me that their kale salad was very good also. Next time I’ll check out their menu a bit more. Well located, easy street parking nearby, decent prices. I will recommend this spot to friends and I’ll definitely be back.

Avocado toast is off the chain. Huge pieces on fresh bread. Plus Stumptown coffee. I guess they have other things but they had me at avocado toast.

The baked goods were fantastic and the décor of this place(down to the bathrooms) was amazing! I had the Kouign which was a buttery, caramelized masterpiece. They also serve Stumptown coffee, the cold brew pre-mixed with chocolate milk is my jam. My mom had the house cured salmon avocado toast with arugula and a light lemon drizzle, it was very fresh and the all the flavors complimented each other perfectly. The beautiful wood table and til ework through the bakery were a feast for the eyes. When you go into the bathrooms you can have a dance party, you have your own personal speaker rocking jams while you do your business! I highly recommend this place for a quick coffee and pastry or a light lunch.

Was this place inspired by a Wes Anderson movie? Because it sure seemed that Bill Murry himself baked my pizza slices. I had a «square» of meat lovers and a «square» of mushroom and cheese. And they both had uncooked dough in the center. Shameful for such a pretty kitchen. The breakfasts are good. My steamed Duck egg muffin was delicious, and my Wife loved her trout. But this Tuesday night, the place was nearly empty. I’m most lucky that I did not order a whole slab of pizza. Would have nearly emptied the dough from my wallet. $ 60 is way too much for sloppy pizza. Their oven baked bread is good, But pricey. I’m sorry, but Roman Candle just fizzed out. Oh… and parking really, really sucks !!!

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s amore~~~~ actually, I have never had the pizza here, although it looks great. Every time I’ve came here I’ve gotten the Tiramisu, which I’m pretty sure is the best in Portland, it is creamy, moist, and flavorful. The service is always really helpful and fun to hang out there. I love the design of the table and the open seating at the restaurant. I will definitely go back for the Tiramisu, and I want to try the pizza soon too!

It’s hard to find an excellent bakery with good lattes and it’s hard to find an excellent café with a nice selection of baked goods – especially their own baked stuff. This place does a good job of covering both. The lattes we had were awesome, and I did have high expectations; Mr. Sorenson doesn’t half ass… ever. We had the bread and butter, which was great. The bread was fresh and crusty. The chocolate chip cookie was spot on. I would like to come back to this place to try their pizza. The seating is kinda interesting; it’s just a super long table — very communal. I liked the experience.

Came here for a work event. The entire place was closed off and the staff was extremely friendly. the most impressive item I had was the passed appetizer. A arroncini which squid and squid ink. It was so well cooked and flavored. One of the best arroncini I’ve had. The rest of the meal was good but I may need to come back and experience this in a non group/bulk experience. The salads were tasty, my fav was the Kale salad. The others were a little overly dressed(fennel/citrus and a roasted carrot salad). Not sure if that it was because it was there served family style. They were great flavors, just a little too heavy. The pasta was spot on — perfectly al dente with spicy sausage and broccolini. The beef entrée was just ok to me. As was the tiramisu. I definitely woudl come back to try more of the salads/pasta and want to come try a pizza as well!
