Portland Outdoor Indoor Nutrition and Training

POINT fitness has changed my life. A big part of the fitness industry is about looks and image and not quality of life. Melissa and Kimberly have flipped that on it’s head at POINT. They aren’t interested in bikini bodies and buns of steal, but are focused on strength, endurance and your ability to live a healthy lifestyle.
I started going last year with my good friend, and I can’t imagine my life without Melissa and Kimberly. They work with all kinds of people at various fitness levels. I was really out of shape and had been out of the gym for a while, but in short time I could tell big improvements including much better muscle tone, endurance, and strength. And they’re really fun. I’m more couch potato then fitness enthusiast. So having an environment that’s fun, with trainers who care about you, and really make a difference that I can see.

My first workout at POINT this morning and I was definitely doggin’ it but also having fun! (I can always sincerely say that once it’s over ;)
Everyone was welcoming and friendly and helped «show me the ropes» I never felt intimidated and I felt like part of the gang from the get-​go. I’m sure I will be sore tomorrow and I’m looking forward to what the next work out brings. So glad I finally tried this spot it’s been on my radar for a while.

This gym is awesome! I was looking for a place that would push me, get me into better shape, but also realize life isn’t all about a gym and how many more reps you can do than the person next to you. All workouts are tailored to individual ability and the other members are just flat out great people. I love going to Point just to laugh with everyone there. The first two classes are free so it makes it really easy to try it out. I did and was hooked and will never look for another gym!

As an outdoor and fitness enthusiast, I have a lot of experience with different trainers, coaches and classes. I do a lot of long distance mountain bike racing and cyclocross, and I need to strength train to keep myself fit and injury-​free.
I had been lifting weights regularly on my own for a few years, following various training plans, and last winter I grew bored and decided to look for a place to take some classes to challenge myself again. Crossfit seemed way too aggro for me, and most of the other bootcamp-​style classes seem based around weight loss, which is not my goal. Then I found Portland Outdoor Indoor through a friend, and instantly fell in love.
The classes are challenging, always totally different, and over time has made me much stronger then I’ve ever been. I recently completed the longest off-​road race I’ve ever done, and for the first time ever, I had no hip or knee pain.
The trainers are amazing – they always look out for you and can recommend modifications or make things even harder if you need it. The classes are small, friendly, supportive and never fail to kick my butt. Can’t recommend it enough.

I have been attending this gym for a few months and I have to say every time I walk through those doors I know I’m going to get my butt kicked (in a rewarding way). POINT does not and will not disappoint!
The basic day starts with the warm-​up which includes stretching, mobility, and sprint drills to get the heart rate going. Then, the main workout begins. What I like about POINT is that they don’t just focus on high intensity cardio circuit workouts, don’t get me wrong, they do happen! But they also focus on overall strength as well. Everything is constantly varied, and no days are ever the same!
As far as the movements go, every single workout is broken down into detail by their amazing coaches, Melissa and Kimberly. Form and technique is never sacrificed for weight and speed, and both coaches are very knowledgeable and helpful in making sure movements and lifts are done correctly. They also fit the rate of intensity to what you’re capable to. Workouts will be scaled so a 90 year old grandparent is getting the same amount of intensity while he or she is going toe to toe next to a triathlete.
Outside of POINT I’m a «CrossFitter», and the change in my cardiovascular endurance and overall training has improved vastly since I’ve joined. I’ve always had an elitist mindset about anything non-​CrossFit related and how all of them will be a walk in the park… Oh boy was I wrong! POINT has really humbled me and the level of intensity of their workouts keeps me striving to get better! If you are on the fence about trying POINT, give it a shot, and I 100% guarantee that you will love it!

First off, my partner and I are avid athletes; me being a tennis pro and her a sports junkie (basketball, soccer, tennis, rugby). We were recommended by an adventure/​outdoor junkie friend to give POINT a try, and found out that they had a Living Social deal going on so we thought why not?
Though they were not our first option, they are by far the clear winner out of all the gyms we tried. Not naming the other gyms, Kimberly and Mel were the only owners that greeted us and showed us around. In addition, they answered all of my partner’s questions regarding health and fitness (she is a difficult consumerist). You can tell they love what they do and contagiously spread it to their members.
POINT doesn’t solely focus on cross-​fit — where it is common to want to build strength and be competitive. Kimberly and Mel preach intensity and to do what you can in the limited time given. It’s great for athletes that do not focus on bulk and strength, but overall strength, speed and agility. It’s also refreshing that their gym is brightly colored (orange) instead of the dark colored theme mixed with the serious tone of black.
If you’re merely looking for a place to workout to look good, you’re probably good sticking with a 24 hour fitness. If you’re looking to compete in the CrossFit Games, perhaps another cross-​fit gym is for you. But if you want to improve your athletic game and/​or life, this is more of a fit. It’s not about how much you can lift at what (fast) pace, but to push yourself at a higher intensity level (even with just your own body weight).
Even though I am only in my second week of POINT, I will continue to stick with them after my month trial. Thanks for making us believers! :)

Coming from a CrossFit background, I was a little hesitant to try a new gym whose sole focus wasn’t CrossFit. Boy was I wrong. The combination of Olympic lifting, cross training, and functional movement is putting me in better shape than ever. Every single class is a different workout that always keeps me on my toes and always destroys me (in the best way possible). I feel like I’m getting stronger without bulking and my cardio has significantly improved without miles of running. The coaches never let athletes compromise form for speed or weight and pay close attention to each athlete’s individual needs. I can’t recommend this gym enough and am psyched to keep getting after it.
