Portland City Boxing

This boxing gym is fantastic. I had an incredibly positive experience that I feel compelled to share with others. If you are interested in taking up boxing — go for it! Boxing has been the most enjoyable form of exercise I have ever experienced.
I am a beginner boxer that was interested in finding a new form of fitness that is therapeutic and keeps me engaged. I have been a CrossFit member and runner for several years so my fitness level is more advanced and my attention span is almost non-​existent. I am used to quick and unique workouts and I was worried I would get bored with boxing — I was completely wrong!
I started training privately with Bendu and I had a wonderful experience. He is a great coach that accurately asses your fitness level and keeps your sessions challenging, fresh and fun. He is patient but also pushes you to do better. I was very impressed with how within five lessons I was able to learn an entire routine and begin to «free style» (as I call it). Due to some personal issues I’ve had to stop my private training, but I fully intend on starting again within a few months. I encourage anyone interested in boxing to join the Portland City Boxing gym!

Let me begin by saying that if you told me at the beginning of this year that I would be not only a member of a boxing gym, but an active and enthusiastic member of a boxing gym, I would have asked the bartender to cut you off. I do not come from a pugilistic or– to be frank– much of an athletic background. I found out about PCB sort of by accident; I was looking for a swimming pool close to downtown that isn’t the MAC, and somehow, PCB popped up on Unilocal.I was intrigued, so I went down later that day to visit Jeremy and find out what is was all about. Haven’t looked back since. I have been a member since May of 2015.
Although I have done an occasional PM group class with with Jeremy, I generally go to morning class run by Ben Metts, who is not only a great guy with a ton of stories, but one hell of a trainer. The class is generally about an hour, but I promise you, it seems to fly by. That’s what happens when you spend a morning hitting the bag until you don’t want to move your arms anymore, then doing about 10 minutes of calisthenics, topped out by planking. It hurts, some days more than others, but it is an insane amount of fun and it will get you in shape double quick.
One other thing I’d like to mention is that the classes are often gender neutral and the women I have spoken to who are members tend to really like the vibe; It’s serious, but not somber. You get a great workout, but you will have some laughs and not have to put up with a serious macho vibe. The people who work out there are wonderful and one of the best parts of the experience.
Needless to say, I am a huge fan of PCB and sing their praises often. Do yourself a favor and come down to check it out.

I’m strictly a beginner boxer. I wanted a way to do cario workouts and not be bored out of my mind. My buddy and I decided to try boxing. We found Portland City Boxing online and it it’s close to where I work so we stopped by. Jeremy made us feel welcome from the beginning. I joined up figuring $ 40 a month was a great deal and I’d probably do more than 4 classes a month.
My first boxing workout and I was hooked. Ben and Jeff are great teachers. They truly enjoy what they do and it shows. The workouts are hard but you learn something every day. They will take the time to give you a little 1:1 when they can. The time flies by because you are busy the entire time. You learn how to hit the speed bag and heavy bag, you do conditioning drills and you work the mitts. I started just going one day a week and now I go 3 days a week when my schedule allows. I miss it on the off days. I can’t recommend this place enough. The classes I have attended have all range of skills from first timers to more advanced boxers and all are treated with the same resepct.

Equipment is plentiful even tho it is a smaller space and whilst most of the programmed material is heard towards fitness and basic boxing both Ben and Jeff offer more detailed coaching and instruction when you are ready
The social aspect of this gym is also great. I was really new to the US and it was nice to be invited out with everyone on a social outing and i had a great time. its a smaller group of clientele but everyone was really friendly and i really enjoyed my time here. No ego whatsoever they are all checked at the door.
Ben is a great guy — the classes they run are kinda varied and you may find your on bikes half the time but always challenging. He is an actual two time golden gloves winner which was surprising since i’m pretty sure i can take him and even call him girls names in the process ;)
I only met Jeff once but he was an absolute gentlemen when i did.
Overall really cool gym — you will get a great workout if you put it in.

I’ve been to several MMA and boxing gyms in the Southern California, Portland City Boxing stands toe to toe with the better ones. The gym is situated in small basement, but has more than enough equipment to hone your pugilistic skills. The head trainer, Ben Metts, has an extensive amateur background and some pro experience. For the members that really want to learn the nuances of the sweet science, Ben is an excellent instructional resource. There also is a community feel to gym, I haven’t come across anyone with an ego. Most members get together to watch boxing matches. Also, their membership dues are more than fair-​$ 40 a month.

This gym has everything you would look for in a classic boxing gym… except the smell. All new equipment and a personal touch make this a great place to learn a new combo, sweat out your problems and lose a few pounds while you’re doing it.
Several options including class only at $ 10/​class, monthly membership at $ 40/​month, and personal instruction at $ 50/​hour. All are well below average costs, but the real value here are the care that the owners show to their gym and the people who chose to work out with them. Jeff is a veteran of both the Army and professional boxing who has seen it all and shares his knowledge openly. Ben is a young veteran of professional boxing who provides enough energy to motivate even the most novice person.
Boxing is an incredible workout that will get you in shape FAST.

I happened upon Portland City Boxing on-​line. One of the best treasures I’ve discovered through the e-​world. The classes are affordable at only $ 10 per class, and only for the classes you attend. No contracts or membership requirements. The equipment rocks, the location is conveniently located within walking distance of the max and streetcar lines, the bootcamp classes are challenging for all fitness levels, and new exercises are frequently added to the workout station routines.
The instructor Ben, is amazing! He’s energetic, fun, and has a way of making everyone, and yes I mean ‘everyone’ feel comfortable. Think you have excuses to not do these classes? Read on…
«I’m too out of shape» — Not a problem! I have a sedentary job and haven’t worked out in too many months before finding Portland City Boxing, and Ben motivates you to challenge yourself to the best of «your» ability. Of course as with any exercise routine, you’d want your doctor’s go ahead, but your performance level is solely based on what you are able to do, not what Ben or someone else can do.
«I’m too old» — The class participants range in age from I would guess 20 somethings to 50+. I myself am nearing that 50 mile marker and feel as though I fit in just fine. Ben makes everyone of all ages feel welcome.
«I don’t have anything to wear» — This is an easy one too. Wear whatever you feel comfortable moving and sweating in. Yes sweating! You will definitely sweat in these workouts. Some folks have cool workout gear, while others like me wear leggings and a T-​shirt. It’s not a fashion competition, or a meat market. It’s a place to go and get in a great workout.
«But I don’t have time» — The classes are offered at 5:30 & 6:30 pm. Monday and Wednesday evenings, I believe with likely plans for more offerings in the future. Given proximity to public transit, and a parking garage with low cost evening parking, as well as some street parking, you can easily fit a class in on your daily commute.
Doors to the building lock at 5, so make sure you bring your phone so you can call or e-​mail Ben. He’ll let you in with a smile on his face, and give you a building access card for reentry for your future classes.
There are men and women’s locker room facilities on-​site, and provided in the class are bottled water, workout towels, and frequent high-​fives from Ben as he’s cheering you on.
Whether you’re a pro wanting to bump up your game (forgot to mention private lessons are available), are just starting out slowly like me, or fall somewhere in between, Portland City Boxing is the place to go.
