LOLYelps – An Elite Event @ Curious Comedy Theater

Elite events are always great! Events with other Unilocalers are also always great. Such a friendly and welcoming crowd. After a week of tooth pain (two extracted teeth and two cases of dry socket!) and a week of painkillers, I didn’t even know if I could rally to enjoy myself. But boy was I desperate for a night of comedy and social contact. I’m so glad I went!
I had never been to Curious Comedy Theater… and it’s so very convenient! It has a nice feel and clean restrooms. Parking in the lot around back wasn’t too difficult to find. They served beer and champagne which isnt my favorite (I’m more of a vodka or whiskey girl) but I had a bit of champagne and enjoyed myself! Snacks were available — a decent amount and variety. My fave was roast beef on a green… was that it? Really good, and I enjoyed the dates as well. But I’ve definitely had better foods at other Unilocal events.
These performers have heart! I took an improv class last year and it’s hard work. They started out super strong, with a really good pace, but it got a little stunted, and by midway, they had really lots their comedy sparkle. But I know that each night is different and they were all good performers for sure!
Thanks for helping get me out of my misery… comedy is funny!

My first Elite event since I moved to Portland, and I was pleased to meet some very friendly people. I came alone and was initially intimidated by the amount of people who all seemed to know each other. But then I put on my sassy pants and walked up to strangers to say hello and introduce myself. Everyone was super welcoming.
I had no idea what to expect from the show, but wow — Pipes was amazing. My gut hurt from laughing so much and my brain hurt from trying to conceive how people can be so witty, synchronized, relevant, and brilliant in improv. I’m glad to know such an organization exists to promote the comedic arts, and I personally might consider taking a workshop there myself — for shits and giggles.
I wasn’t drinking that night and I didn’t get to nibble on much food, but I definitely enjoyed the venue and think it would make a great space for parties. Plus I snagged a pair of Unilocal socks that I’m excited about!
Most of all — I am really looking forward to seeing Pipes perform again sometime in the future. What a fun idea for an Elite event.

I’ve been to Curious Comedy many moons ago and what a transformation they’ve made! Much nicer place and never realized they have so many different hors d’oeuvres they offer. My favorite by far is the pizza-​like delicious crack. They also have a variety of cocktails and a couple draft beers. But the real headliners are the performers. They’re hilarious and it’s all improv, which never ceases to amaze me. I could never do that! Well, speaking of which, if you DO want to try it out, they’re actually a non-​profit organization and have classes to help you do just that.

Such a fun event!
I’m a big newbie when tit comes to comedy shows in general and I didn’t know what to expect. I have such respect now for comedians and improv comedy. It’s AMAZING what they can come up with without collaborating with one another. If you get the chance, GO SEE PIPES!
The appetizers were amazing and I also had some beer and champagne. I would definitely visit the Curious Comedy Theater again.

This event was fantastic! My favorite one yet! Kudos to Don and team + Curious Comedy folks for putting together such a wonderful time!
Not only were the bites served up delicious but I loved that they had a few veggie options so that I wasn’t completely out of luck. The show was hilarious and interactive. Talk about talent! I can’t wait to return and even suggested coming here on our next team builder for work… well see how that pans out…
Even if I don’t get my way for a team builder, I’ll definitely be back!

I’ve attended three Unilocal Elite events now (as a plus one, but that might change soon…), and this event is definitely the most memorable so far! It was a great way to spend a Thursday night; Elite events during the week are a great way to break up the normal week-​to-​week routine.
My fiancé and I were greeted with red Unilocal elite socks, and the aroma of fresh pizza and gourmet hors d’oeuvres. While he went for the Deschutes sponsored beer, I happily enjoyed a glass (or three) of refreshing champagne. Overall, the provided food and drink were filling and delicious.
We had an hour to mingle, eat, and drink before the show began at 8. The evening moved along at a good pace, and it was obvious by the occupied seats that guests were eagerly anticipating the show. This was my first experience seeing improv, and the unscripted acting was really raw and funny. The actors performed «Pipes,» which is an hour long musical based on the audience’s suggestions. The performers did a great job capturing our attention. Their passion for comedy is evident in their acting. The fact that it is a non-​profit comedy club is really cool in my opinion. I’m all about sharing the arts.

What a great event! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was impressed with the quality of food and drinks (too bad the pizza disappeared seconds after I walked in!) I was apprehensive when they said it would be a musical comedy, but it was really funny and I had a great time. I will definitely make the effort to come back, and who knows maybe I’ll try out for improv!

Thank you Don for putting this together, Ana for your coordination, and all CCT staff involved. What a pleasurable night and a great introduction to the NE side. I had passed by this venue a couple times and am so glad I finally got to try out what you’re all about.
Pipes was hilarious and an applaud-​able accommodation to the always winning improv technique. The songs and musical accompaniments were also on point. Bringing the act to the audience in the end with the whole «I’m having snacks, I don’t care, whatever, I don’t care» bit was ingenious (very Jennifer Gardner-​esque: cute and hilarious). Really awesome show, as was the food. Appreciated the several vegetarian options, and that they were labeled.
I was very impressed and see coming back for future date nights! Thanks for sharing.

What an amazingly funny event! Curious Comedy Theater presented a hilarious show during which I rarely stopped laughing and enjoyed every moment. I haven’t been to many improv comedy shows, but I’ve been to a few, and this way by far the best one.
Food was delicious. I couldn’t seem to get enough of those fancy arugula salad bites, but really everything was creative, fresh, and tasty. And then the creamsicle cocktail… YUM.
But wait… there’s more! A non-​profit with programs giving back to the community?! Curious Comedy Theater is nothing short of awesome. Can’t wait to come back!

To think I almost let my 12-​day long cold keep me from this event! All hail DayQuil!
This ‘hood sure has changed. I was not expecting such a nice space, an intimate setting but comfortable. Before I even had two feet in the door, I was offered some mouth-​watering pulled pork yumminess. All of the appetizers passed around were delish, as were the brews and bubbly Unilocal hosted for us!
But onto the show!
Fan-​fucking-​tastic! I laughed so hard, my face hurt. Phenomenal improvers, playing into our Unilocaler reviews for materials. Im still giggling at The «Church of Girth»! Thank you to the amazingly talented cast and crew who welcomed and entertained us! I will most definitely be back go check out more shows.

LOL we did! What a fun evening! We had our wit-​Ts about us, enjoyed delish snacks (no Chex party mix here!), pulled up a Red Chair (or three), and laughed our a**es off. Brilliant Improv!
But even better, Curious Comedy Theater is F U N N Y with a mission; it is my new favorite non-​profit. Here’s a look at their outreach programs:
«New Memories Project» in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, teaches improvisational workshops to seniors in assisted living facilities to improve their quality of life by reducing agitation, increasing positive interactions and making new positive memories with their families and caregivers.
«Play on Words (POW!)» is a literacy program that uses improv theater to help teach reading and writing skills to 4^th and 6^th graders.
«All Jane No Dick Comedy» (hahahaha, I say) is designed to empower women to find their voice through comedy.
Laughter really is the best medicine. I feel like a million bucks today (but you only need $ 12 to get a good dose of what CCT offers)…

This was absolutely one of the best Unilocal Elite events I’ve been to! I love the events when there actually is «an event», and we’re not just standing around drinking all night (don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing!).
We arrived promptly at 7 and were immediately greeted by some salmon paté on cucumbers. I headed straight for the bar and was pleased to see they had Deschutes Red Chair as the beer of choice for the evening… I think I had 3 :)
I was very impressed with the food. It not only tasted good and there was plenty of it, but I loved how many different food items they prepared for us. Spicy pork, pizza, lettuce wrap, dates, peppers and hummus, and more that I can’t remember right now.
The staff was super friendly, which is always something I look for at an Elite event: are they annoyed at having us here or happy to have us? That’s big for me and they definitely liked having us there.
At a typical event, that’s all the review I would have for you. But not for this one! After all this eating and drinking, we had a show to watch!
The comedy group of 5 people performed their show Pipes, which involved improv comedy put to music. They were great and so creative. My suggestion of «girth» made it into the show quite prominently with the Church of Girth that ultimately was burned to the ground by a hot tamale of a mess. I was impressed they actually made a whole story line out the suggestions throughout the night instead of doing separate skits. Very cool!

Comedy shows are usually something I don’t really think about going to until after I’ve gone. Usually immediately following the show I question why we don’t go more often.
The show was hysterical. I love how they worked the answers from the audience into the show. Big bonus is I’m always up for breaking into song and they BURNED IT DOWN!
Deschutes beer was poured. Tasty treats were brought around by a wonderful staff. The pizza with arugula was delish!
The t-​shirts that made it out were a great conversation piece before the show! Prizes were given for the best ones. I like the piñata one!
Had a great time! Thanks to Don, Ana, the Pipes, and all the friendly staff at curious for the show. I’ll be back.
One word, right?

Such a great venue, and an even better show! Curious Comedy reminds me a bit of all the famous Chicago comedy, with the convenience of being in Portland. This place is non-​profit, so it feels good supporting a business that does community outreach of all sorts.
COMEDY: The Pipes show was pretty amazing. Given ideas from the rowdy Unilocal audience, they crafted a great show about things looking simple, but not being easy. Maybe a jab at the hypercritical review crowd? Sure, and all in good fun! Great improv and singing… what more could you ask for?
FOOD/​BOOZE: The small bites before the show were all very tasty, which included vegan and vegetarian options. They also offered Red Cedar at the bar (yum!) as well as champagne (straight to my head!). I can’t wait to try this place out during their regular show!
DON AND ANA: Great choice for an Elite Event and the «wit t-​shirt» contest! And thanks for the tickets to the Cirque show, I’ll definite «hit that» when it comes up. ;D

Wow, what a way to kick off my very first Elite Event!
As soon as I walked in the door, before I could even check in and get my name tag, a lovely gentleman handed me a little bun piled high with pulled pork. That set the tone for the rest of the evening — delicious bites of food (so many bites!), free-​flowing beer and cava, and Pipes!
The folks at Curious Comedy Theater put on a fantastic show for us Unilocalers.
I’ve never seen an improvised musical before, and Pipes was hilarious. The performers had great interpersonal chemistry and did a great job of taking our ridiculous suggestions and turning them into a killer show. They truly looked like they were having fun, which is definitely noticeable and important.

The funniest Unilocal event in PDX history (at least in the last five years).
I could tell you about the amazing spread of hors d’oeuvres we ate throughout the evening but instead of the food it was the improvised musical comedy ensemble, Pipes, that made a lasting impression on me. It was everything comedy improv should be. Funny! I love watching improv & the five talented individuals of Pipes had every Unilocal Elite & their guest laughing the entire time. They got us involved by getting them started with a few themes for the night & from then on we were all roaring with laughter.
Thank you Curious Comedy Theater & Unilocal crew for putting on an unforgettable LOL event.

Despite arriving a little late to the pre-​show, my friends and I scored excellent parking around the corner and hurried to the club. We were promptly greeted with appetizers as we walked in and the line for drinks were super minimal. As soon as I heard bubbly I went for a glass and savored it with each drop. After many hello’s and hugs from peeps I havn’t seen in a while, the show began. There was plenty of small bites to go around and even when the show progressed, they had more to sample on the side.
The venue is pretty spacious and easy to get around. The service was friendly and the staff made sure we all got to try the various appetizers they offered. The marinated pork was my favorite of the evening with the right blend of seasonings and just a hint of peppery kick. As the show began, I was surprised how well the comedians put on a great show with only a few words from the audience to go by. The show lasted an hour but it went by so fast. I enjoyed the fact it’s a non profit theater and they also hold various classes. If you pay attention closely, they have a promo code for future shows — shhhhhhhhhhh I can’t tell LOL!!!

The Curious Comedy Theater put on a hilarious improv show. They asked for a name. I suggested Bartek. They responded, «Bartek? That’s not a real name!» Fucking Hilarz.
I remember laughing a lot. I don’t remember exactly what about (faded from a pregame, nahmean). To get a bunch of snarky Unilocalers to laugh at actual comedy is very impressive.
Curious’ kitchen dispelled the reputation of bad Comedy theater food (Harvey’s, nahmean). The Hors d’oeuvres were fresh and tasty. I can’t exactly tell you what I ate (faded, nahmean), but I remember camping at the food table because there was so much extra good food. Restaurants usually have a hard time keeping up with elite demand, but kudos to the kitchen for putting out a great spread of food.
This was one of most unique, fun, and funny elite events ever.

LOL indeed! Even ROFLCOPTERS. This was a good and funny event!
I missed out of most of the food but did snag a tasty pulled pork and roast beef on lettuce. What I did see waltzing by looked awesome. I did not, however, miss out on the bubbyl There was also beer available but I was sticking to bubbly for health reasons (ha!). After we all mixed and mingled, it was time for the show!
I was massively impressed by the talent shown by the improv troupe! They took our weird suggestions and made an entire show based of them as they went. I could never do it as fluidly as them. It was also neat to hear that they have classes and such for people wanting to try their hand at comedy and improve. AND! It’s a non-​profit!

Plentiful and tasty food and drinks. The Curious staff handled the crowds of Unilocalers with ease and smiles.
I could only encourage you to go to Curious by going to your house and lighting your pants on fire. Seriously, go to any of their shows and be prepared to be entertained. And if you are not then something is not right with you.
