Way out on the Left Coast, Oregon hasn’t raised an overwhelming number of world changers. But Linus Pauling is one, and he is the only person in history to receive two solo Nobel Prizes. It is not a public museum, but his childhood house still stands on Hawthorne Blvd. Pauling went to Oregon State, where his archives are, then Cal Tech. He arrived at the right time at Cal Tech, then went on to collaborate with the leading thinkers in high energy physics. That inspired him to create the theoretical basis for modern chemistry, molecular biology and molecular genetics. He received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1954. For his tireless work after 1945, studying and publicizing the danger of nuclear weapons and the impact of radiation on biology, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1963, on the day the United States ratified the treaty banning above ground nuclear weapons testing. Pauling was a leader in the study of micronutrients and an advocate of regular supplements of vitamin C. Thanks Dr Pauling!
