Jennifer Stelzer

I joined my first hockey team in 1986. In 2013, I began practicing aikido. Today, when I’m not getting slammed into unforgiving wooden boards or grimacing as a grimy hand mashes my face into a sweaty canvas mat, I sit hunkered over a keyboard making my contribution to keep corporate America alive. At night, I sling an 8 lb. guitar over my shoulder, crane my neck, and shrug my ear to my shoulder with a furrowed brow in an effort to achieve the «Blue Steel» of guitar faces.
I am not easy on my body.
As such, I require bodywork.
I’m not referring to the sort of body work that begins with an Izod clad host perched behind a faux zen’d out reception desk greeting me with a plastered smile, eager to lead me to the men’s dressing room while the sounds of Yanni’s magical fingers fill the air. You know the place. Embroidered robe wadded up on top of acupuncture-​approved studded gel slippers inside your private locker, a steam room to loosen you up, a fledgling masseuse lightly teasing the calcium deposits bubble-​gummed to your joints. Sure, that can be relaxing when you’re in an open-​air terrace in Hawaii because another day of February rain might cause you to actually consider relocating to Southern California despite the sales tax, gridlock traffic, urban sprawl and perpetual drought. I’m referring to real bodywork from someone who knows the human body as well as Division street knows change.
Enter: Jennifer Stelzer. If there is such a thing as a body whisperer, she deserves the title as well as the accolade for employee of the century.
Her Hawthorne location is pure bliss. It’s quiet, comfortable, conveniently located (lots of street parking and a Blue Star donut shop nearby), and setup for the best massage of your life.
Personally, I favor deep tissue massage. My shoulders rest at a different height, my IT band is pulled tighter than the mammoth cables of a suspension bridge, and my hips creak like the hinges of a sincerely haunted house. I need a pro who can figure out that my knees hurt — not because there is something wrong with my knees — because everything connected to them is stiff and rigid and the source of my pain. I need someone who can give me helpful tips about stretching problematic muscles. I need someone who can «listen» to what is really going on with my body when I get tension headaches from the stress of work and life so that I don’t have to eat Advil with every meal. Perhaps you have different massage preferences than I do. Take comfort in knowing that Jennifer will adjust to your needs. She is a fantastic listener.
Jennifer is the best massage therapist I have ever been to, and I assure you my massage history is longer than your laundry list of online dating horror stories. Her prices are fair and she won’t quit in the middle of working out a kink in your neck just because a 60 or 90 minute timer went off. She will get that kink out of your neck.
Like I said, I am hard on my body, and I am grateful for discovering Jennifer’s services. I always leave her office walking straighter, shoulders back, breathing deeply and feeling like my muscles and joints are situated where they’re supposed to be.
