Ivan Dollar

The space is gorgeous and Ivan is amazing. Portland has plenty of barber shops but this is a beautiful studio staffed by very talented stylists. I don’t think I could even go anywhere else at this point because I’m spoiled by the relaxed environment and Ivan’s impeccable tastes and standards.

OK we’re going all up in the review category right here with the IVAN DOLLAR salon not only is it SEXY FRESH Eastside best hair you will ever have, products are Shu Uemura and Diva Curl and Rene Furterer and his shampoo sinks make me want to come‼

Still driving 2 hours each way to see Ivan. Still worth every minute. The studio continues to grow and improve. Ivan’s skill and charm remain impeccable.

I waited 2 months to get an appointment here and what a disappointment this place was! It’s in a low rent area of town with only two parking places allotted in the lot and the owner parks his truck in one of those so you are left to find street parking in a highly ticketed area. The shop is very uncomfortable with very cheap grooming chairs that don’t even have arm rests! And even worse are the horrible chairs at the sinks– they don’t line up with the sink so your neck is broken by the time your hair is rinsed! But the worse thing of all was what happened to my hair– the stylist must really be in to fashion because I ended up with multicolored stripes, some ombré and a section that looked color blocked. Not at all what I asked for or would ever want! It’s a disgusting mess! The stylist was 20 minutes late starting me and seemed to rush the whole time and be lost as to what she was doing. I wont be going back and would never recommend this salon to anyone. Someone needs to tell Ivan playing French music does not add class to his cheap salon and the prices are way too high for such bad service in such an uncomfortable place!

I followed Andrea to this salon, so this review is for her more than the salon itself. But the fact that this salon can attract talent like Andrea says a lot! Andrea is the best stylist I have ever had. I have incredibly difficult, thick (and I mean thick) curly hair that has been described as everything from a rainforest to Bobo the clown. But ever since I’ve been going to Andrea (for the last year and a half or so) my hair had been transformed into a luscious mane of flowing locks. She is a certified curly hair expert, but in my experience that doesn’t mean much since I’ve been to several «curly hair specialists» without much success. But Andrea is the real deal, and her results are the proof in the pudding. One thing that she refuses to do is thin it out, even with my consistent requests, which is something that every other stylist I have had has done to my hair. Well, she obviously knows best because the results are spectacular, much better than anyone who thinned my hair. She cuts it in a way that it doesn’t have to be thinned… It’s like magic! If you have curly hair, go see Andrea. You won’t be disappointed!

Like a slice of Heaven in a gritty part of Portland, Ivan Dollar has soaring ceilings, exposed brick, and lots of white in its décor. It’s on the second floor of the building and accessible either by elevator when you enter through the rear door, or you can take the twenty or so stairs at the front, which feels like a spiritual trek to me for some reason, like I’m ascending to the Temple of Hair.
Jasmine is my stylist and I’ve followed her to several spots around town since I found her at a downtown salon in 2000. I have an epic mane (I think of it as my pet.) and Jasmine is an artist, so we’re a good fit.
Free (limited) parking!

About a year ago, I moved to Portland from NYC with high expectations for a salon and stylist. Lucky for me, I found April. April is just what I want in a stylist– talented, prompt, detailed, and fun! I appreciate that she listens very carefully to what I want but also offers input and ideas. The salon has beautiful light and feels comfortable, clean and relaxing. And best of all, my hair looks fantastic!

I have been going to Ivan for years and he has never let me down. He knows me so well that I just sit in his chair and works his magic. When I suggest a change he gives me the pros and cons and we decide together if it would be a good cut/​color for me. The salon is always clean and inviting. The décor is changed every time I go in. I love this place!

i followed my stylist here when she changed salons, and have never looked back. the space is really lovely; quiet, tastefully furnished, and full of natural light from big picture windows. the service is unfailingly client-​focused, with thoughtful touches (choice of beverages, variety of reading material). and my stylist is an absolute expert — i started carrying her business cards with me due to so many strangers stopping me on the street to ask who does my hair! this salon is truly a gem, and i’ll be a faithful client for as long as i call portland my home.

Wherever Molly styles I follow, and I have been most pleased with Ivan Dollar. The space is beautiful, easy to get to, and it offers several designated parking spaces for customers which is a plus. A variety of beverages are available upon your welcome which is a nice touch too. I have had Molly cut and color my hair for 10 years now, and have enjoyed the many styles and shades she has come up with for my hair. It is unusual to have someone really listen. She does that and much more.

This guy is just awesome. He has been doing hair for a very long time, and knows what he is doing. I have hair trust issues, and well? I don’t worry in the least, when I’m in this salon. I KNOW I am going to come out, looking fabulous. He also places a lot of care and faith in the other stylists who work there. From what I have seen, they are all really great.
The atmosphere is also just beautiful. There is always a grand display of fresh flowers, as well as creative décor that changes periodically. The space is located in a beautiful old Victorian building, and just exudes charm and class.

I love Ivan — both as a person and as a hairdresser. He used to be in Eugene and when he moved to Portland, I was so disappointed. Because I adore him and all the wonderful things he can do with short hair, I travel to Portland every five or six weeks for a cut and color. I have bad hair to begin with, but people always stop and compliment me on my hair. It is all because of Ivan’s magic.
