Independent Publishing Resource Center

This place is pretty dope. They have basically anything you would need to do any sort of self publishing, they do art outreach to the youths, offer classes to anyone who might want them for graphic design programs, and have zines from the 1950s. The space itself just makes you feel like you should be doing something productive, it’s an art workshop and that by itself just motivates you to create.
I got a membership just so I could have someplace to draw on my computer with other people doing mostly the same thing. The memberships are sliding scale and you get a nice little array of discounts to go along with them. They do hourly, quarterly, and yearly rates for anyone interested.
Also, this place runs mostly on volunteers so if you’ve got some time to spare and you want to help something that really empowers a lot of people, they could always use your help.

A couple notes on one of my favorite places in Portland:
1. It’s not a storefront, so you gotta peel those eyes when you’re on W. Oak Street. The IPRC is in the upper floor of a mixed use building next to Reading Frenzy, so you have to get buzzed in. Look for the sign they usually place outside the building.
2. This place ain’t just for zinesters. Although that is a significant part of their purpose, and although they do have one of the largest zine libraries in the country, this place is for crafty folks of all colors. They have bookbinding machines, a screenprinting device, multiple computers with expensive design and publishing software (the entire Adobe suite, for example), and materials that are useful for making your own business cards, greeting cards, and calendars, as well as zines.
3. They operate on an honor system, which, you see, depends on your honorable character. By paying for the things you print out and paying for a membership, you’re like, preventing this magical place from dying. So pay yer dues!
That’s all for now. Pay them a visit! You’ll fall in love with the place. Oh, and beware – the whole block smells like delicious Thai food, so eat before you go there or you’ll find yourself $ 10 poorer and stuffed with noodles.

i went to scan some of my comic book stuff. the staff has helpful, polite and cute… and it was cheap.
they have a lot of good workshops on how to make zines and format your comic books, that i should take some day.
if you have an interest in self publishing IPRC is a very good place to go.

The IPRC is like a playground for zinesters. Not only do they have one of the largest and most well organized zine libraries in the country (and maybe the world?), but they have all the tools you need to make a zine for a very reasonable yearly membership. They have computers, photocopiers, long armed staplers, a letterpress studio, paper cutters, and so much more! They also have workshops on various topics every month that range from free to $ 50 on subjects such as Zines and the Law, Letterpress 101, In Design, and so much more.
If you’re curious about the IPRC, twice a month they have an open house where the director of the center takes you on a tour and talks about the facilities. I highly recommend attending.

This place ROCKS! They have almost anything a crafty person might need to make really cool stuff and they are super nice! I am still really stoked to find them!
