In or Out Tax Service

I honestly wish I had read the reviews before I used this service who was recommended by a friend I will never take a recommendation from again.
eve is honestly a nice person. that said, she is also waaaaay above her head at the moment and has taken on more work than she can process.
I hired In and Out to fix a situation I was in from my last accountant, who had a divorce and a nervous breakdown during tax season and decided to disappear and not file anything after telling me it was all set. Eve told me she could set everything straight. I was thrilled to work with her. She was kind and down to earth. Our first appointment was our best, as you will see, shit just started blowing up from there.
Sadly, she gave me bad filing advice, which lead to a very difficult financial situation (unmarried parents filing for the first time with kiddo). Also, she simply DIDN’T file my 2014 taxes… and while my LLC taxes were supposedly filed before the deadline… she did not file those either! At least, not according to the IRS. She says she did. She says she will call. This is the 50^th time I have heard that. Today is the due date for the penalty she claims should not exist… and here I am, trying to get a hold of her again.
The habits of not returning phone calls, failing to follow through with agreed upon services and the never ending slew of shit that has come from this situation is truly baffling.
Since I hired her to fix a previous accountants mistake, I used my goodwill with the IRS on that one… who is going to believe that I got royally screwed by two accountants two years in a row. Ugh. BTW Eve, I will remove this if YOU FIX IT NOW! IF not, I will be filing a complaint with the IRS.

I had to file an extension because I received a small inheritance. Then I received notices of penalties from IRS and Oregon department of Revenue. Eve wrote letters for me at no additional charge. She also gave me a heads up that I would have to file estimated taxes next year. She told me what information I need to get in order for her to file the estimated taxes. All this is new to me and I had no idea how to handle this additional income. I really appreciate being walked through this process by someone who knows what they’re doing.
Eve is very knowledgeable, honest and is a pleasure to work with.

CORRECTION! One of the things I noted as a mistake was NOT a mistake – the preparer DID enter the CORRECT amount for our standard deduction. (I didn’t realize our standard deduction was now higher than our itemized deductions, until I got a letter from the IRS saying they fixed that part.)

I am noooot happy with this place. They did my taxes last year, and it was smooth sailing. Then 2015 rolled around, and it’s a totally different story.
I made an appointment earlier this month with all my forms in hand. Last year, Anne did my taxes while I sat there (it took… an hour? 90 minutes?), and I left knowing how much I owed and exactly what to do. Addressed envelopes and everything! It was great!
Not this year. I answered Eve’s questions, gave her all my forms, and she entered stuff into the computer. I don’t know how much time went by…30 min? 45 min? Then she said abruptly, «OK! We’ll call you when someone has had a chance to go through all of this.» Wha? Uh, OK, I guess?
A week went by. Nothing, so I call. «Most people are out of the office today,» the guy says. (Why would you get anyone out of the office during tax season?!) «I don’t know when your taxes will be ready.» Two weeks go by. Still nothing. I call again. No one’s even started on my taxes yet. WTF? Why didn’t they just TELL me when I called to make the appointment that they couldn’t see me til late February?
Eve and Anne are nice, but nice doesn’t make up for a total lack of communication about what to expect. Not going back next year.

I came here for a consultation as a new resident to Oregon and a new freelancer. The lady helping me walked around the office with no shoes on, and continued to meet with me without putting them on. Knowing nothing about me, she told me I wouldn’t make a lot of money my first year of freelancing. !! Hey, unprofessional Portland tax lady — I probably make more than you now, and I actually wear shoes when I meet with clients. I think I’ll find someone else to help me next time

I was terrible and waiting to bring my tax information to Eve at In or Out until almost the last minute. She not only got our taxes done in time, but was available for questions on the very day taxes were due. Even though I knew she had to be working frantically, I never felt rushed on the phone with her. And as a double+ bonus, she got us nice refunds from the feds and state.

Eve has been a blessing to work with through and through. I am not a numbers girl. I am not a tracking girl. In fact, really, my level of ability falls in line with infants when it comes to taxes. Eve helped me understand what I was doing and has made me feel very secure when it comes to taxes. She is lovely and I am happy to be working with her!

I have always been a 1040EZ gal and not thought — or worried — about taxes much. Well, things change. I went in with (gulp) three years of unfiled taxes and a few fiddly details. Three working days later, taxes were done — pdfs were mailed to me for my records — and, I’m delighted to say, the IRS owed me money. All good!
I feel a little iffy about rating In or Out, ’cause I am far from experienced with tax preparers — this was my first and so far only experience paying to have my taxes done. That said, as a neophyte customer, I was as happy as it’s reasonable to be. I went in the off-​season, and the office was fairly deserted-​feeling, and as for décor — it’s not destined for a spread in Dwell any time soon, shall we say. Does that matter to you? It doesn’t bother me; I felt it rather added to the charm. (I could imagine a 12″ tv playing «Bewitched» reruns in the office: for me, see, that’s a plus.) The fellow who helped me out did not guilt-​trip me, which was another plus, and the price — it was around $ 100 for each return — seems to be in the ballpark for most preparers. The experience was not corporate, nor was it – for me – particularly personable. I would definitely return. I guess, based on other reviews, that they step up their game in tax season, but even at their low-​energy points, In or Out did me right.

Very nice people, and they’ve always done a good job for me. I hate taxes, but using a small company with personal service and genuine friendliness makes the whole darn thing less painful.
Forget the big franchises, and buy local.

Run, do not walk from In or Out Tax Service.
These folks assured me they could handle the taxes for my small business. They failed to file my local taxes. As a result I was fined several hundred dollars by the City of Portland. I had my taxes reviewed and subsequently amended by a competent CPA. In or Out had missed a tax deduction of over $ 7,000.
These folks are nice and sweet. However, I made an expensive mistake by choosing them to prepare my taxes.

You know it’s a bad sign when you come out of a consultation feeling like you know more about taxes than the professionals. But I wanted to support this small, local mom-​and-​pop business, and I trusted I would get some good personalized service.
I could not have been more wrong! After spending more than $ 600 to do two sets of returns, I’m truly disappointed by the level of expertise, attention to detail, and the customer service. From silly little mistakes (like getting the IRS address wrong on the envelope) to bigger blunders (neglecting to notice that one of my returns needs to be paper-​filed), I felt like I had to catch their errors at every turn. And this is only after briefly glancing over the returns! After all, I was paying someone to do my taxes; I didn’t want to spend hours examining them.
On top of all this, their customer service and communication are horrible. I realize that tax time is busy, but having only one email address for the entire office and not returning phone calls… that just doesn’t cut it.
A month after filing my taxes, my worst fear came true: I got a notice from them saying that my return needs to be amended because of an error on their part. And not even an apology!
I really wanted to like you… But In or Out for next year? Definitely, OUT.

I just wanted to report my positive experience with this business. Three week turnaround time for our tax preparation, and VERY pleased with the return amount. No frills, no hassle. I highly recommend!

I normally don’t write scathing internet reviews, (and I really wanted to support this local business), but I’ve had a very troubling experience with them.
I came here with a relatively simple filing, and provided them with all the information for them to go forward. I checked in just prior to the deadline, and discovered that little had been done, so they filed an extension.
Over the next six months I didn’t hear a word from In or Out, except when I called to check up on them. After several calls and an in-​person visit, they finally filed my taxes just shy of the extension deadline. I never received any explanation as to why it took over six months to complete this filing.
I later discovered that they understated the amount I owed by over $ 2000, resulting in a penalty from the IRS. They then advised me not to pay the penalty, as they would work it out with the Feds themselves.
Apparently this did not happen, as I’m sitting here with a notice that the government will attempt to hold my property in lien because I failed to pay the correct amount.
Anyway, I apologize to anyone at In or Out who takes offense because of my comments. Nothing personal. I’m just really alarmed at this situation.

Eve may be a great tax preparer but she’s also a terrific teacher. She presented Payroll Taxes for Small Business information at the Small Business Development Center tonight.

Based on previous reviews I had my taxes done here. I could not have been more disappointed. The waiting room, which is open to the main office is noisy and filthy. There was a pot of coffee brewing but we were never offered any. I was happy that Eve was our preparer because of all the wonderful reviews however, she brought her daughter to work that day and unfortunately spent a good portion of our appointment time distracted by her daughter. About half way through our appointment another client brought their child in with them and that child proceeded to throw a tantrum in the waiting room. Eve then informed us that someone else would finish our filing so that she could take care of the client with the screaming child. Getting your taxes done is stressful enough but paying someone way too much money to make the experience miserable was ridiculous.

I’d made a mess of my taxes in previous years, so this year, I decided to bite the bullet and make an appointment with tax professionals. I chose In or Out because it is a local business and also because it had so many positive reviews, and I don’t regret it for a moment.
I walked into the In or Out office with a big folder full of a mess of paperwork, 3 years behind on taxes. I walked out with the paperwork for two tax years completed (!), and a helpful plan to fill in the «blanks» for year 3. All I can say is that Tessa has the patience of a saint! Peter was also very helpful when I had questions.
I will be back soon for that last year! And then they can count my annual patronage.

Can’t believe that I enjoyed doing my taxes, but it was actually kinda fun. Well, I may be somewhat swayed because I got a good return.
Everyone in the office was super nice, Tessa was helping me out. She was real friendly and kept chatting with me, we talked about my move to Portland, and this and that. She put together my return, looking into any possibility of making a larger return. It didn’t take too long, and everything was sent out nice and quick– I had my money in less than 2 weeks. They give you the option of making it all paperless– yay trees!
Anyway, read the previous posts as well, they are a great family run firm that are part of our community. And again they are super friendly. I’m sure I’ll be there come next tax season.

Wow… all 5 star reviews and well deserved! There are few things I think you should pay someone to do, the top three being: roofing, surgery and taxes.
We’ve been going there for years a live a block away. A few days ago, we drove by and Mr. K says, «I wish we had to do taxes more often so we could go see Eve more.» I mighta slugged him but I already broke one of his ribs this week and, truthfully, I agree.
Seriously — I actually look forward to it. While she’s running the numbers, we talk about her twins, real estate, pop culture and cake. I’m disappointed when she’s done because I just so thoroughly like this person.
Last year I heard from some classmates that I might be able to write off my tuition. I shot her an email and magically, when I showed up the next week to drop off my stuff, Eve had already researched it and agreed that I met the conditions, resulting in an $ 11,000.00 return. Well worth the $ 150.00 or so bill to run our joint filing.
Her and her husband, Peter, are really good, smart, cool people — if they weren’t so busy doing taxes and raising twins, they very well could be Yeeps. They’re THAT amazing. :)

A total tax neophyte, I walked in off the street looking for any help I could get. Kay and everyone else in the office were fabulous and whipped through my return with professionalism and pizazz! (OK, the pizazz was for the pink-​haired receptionist!) They were seriously knowledgeable about all my self-​employed needs, and seriously nice. Highly recommended.

OK so I’ve been going to In or Out Tax Service for 8 years and have always been happy with my experience and that’s saying alot since the only things you can count on in life are death and taxes and neither are that much fun (especially that death thing– yuch!).
My taxes as a home owner and independent consultant (1099 or Corp) are always complicated and Eve is always agelically patient and makes me actually enjoy getting my taxes done with early… imagie that… try them, you’ll love them!
