Seriously understaffed. We have been sitting at the sushi bar next to other people’s dirty dishes for over 20 minutes. That’s 20 minutes after the diners already left. The spicy seafood ramen contains clearly frozen seafood and the 99 cent flash-fried ramen. Some good vegetarian/vegan sushi options, but not worth visiting for. Bummer. Diners remorse.

I admit, I am not a sushi connoseauer(sp) like many of you. I do love sushi, and I eat it at least twice a month these days. But once in a while you go somewhere and try the sushi and even a novice like myself knows that THIS is what good sushi tastes like. This is what good sushi tastes like. They are freindly, service is good. Wine and beer and sake — so I got a house white for $ 6. I let my date order since he seemed to know the place and menu well. Seaweed salad, a coated sushi, a tuna salad that was divine(not something I would have thought I’d enjoy that much) and something else. I don’t know hpw much each dish cost, but unfortuneately, my offer to help pay was accepted to I chipped in $ 40 to cover half the bill for A bottle of sake, two wines, and the four(5?) dishes. It was superb! Everything. This place rocks and I will go here again!

A coworker and I came here after work one day. We were pretty tired from working hella overtime, and jonesing for sushi. We sat down at the sushi bar and ordered two of the giant Sashimi platters, and it was just… gorgeous. The fish just melted in my mouth, and everything I put into my face was amazing. (I like this place better than Bamboo. I prefer the normal sushi bar vibe. Don’t get me wrong — Hana is a gorgeous place. I just prefer the lack of pretense — it’s a nice spot!)

I’ve been here about a dozen times. I live right around the corner but I’m not sure what happened tonight. I asked for chicken katsu(for my two year old) and 14 piece sushi to be delivered first like an appetizer. Imagine my surprise when chicken katsu & hubbys order of chicken teriyaki arrive. I ask what about the sushi. He replied, sushi takes time. No shit Sherlock. Give us the sushi first then our entrees after. I reply I would like my entrée, the spicy pork ramen when we are done with the sushi. Hubbys teriyaki is placed to the side. One beat, 75 beats later, no ramen. I wave him over and he replies another 10 mins for ramen when hubby is eating and baby is almost done. Forget it. New server? Food still great. But I was jonesing all day for ramen. Bummer.

I was in the area & in the mood for sushi. When I typed into my maps«sushi» this was the closest place, so I decided to give it a try. …I wish I could go back in time & not waste $ 33 at this place. I was seated promptly, given a menu & ice water. But when I asked for a straw, 10 minutes later the server — in an empty restaurant — still hadn’t brought it. I ended up getting up & asking another person for a straw. This prompted my server to follow me back to my table so I could order. Put in my order aaaaand then waited… And waited… and waited some more. When finally my food arrived, it looked quite tasty. But on eating & trying all the different rolls I got, the only one worth eating was my Vegas roll & I’m pretty sure it was because of the cream cheese inside — the rolls looked tasty, but literally tasted like nothing! When I decided I was done eating, I looked at my phone for the time & then sat with my arms crossed looking in the direction of the kitchen/server station… Literally 15 minutes went by with servers/staff & my waitress walking back & forth and NOTONCE did anyone glance in my direction. I finally was so annoyed I got up & asked for my check & a box. When my server came over I told her that I normally tip 30% & feel bad that I wasn’t planning on tipping her because I know server taxes are a b*tch & told her all the reasons I wasn’t going to tip… She argued with me about her service & didn’t really seem to care. Easy enough for me to remember her name; Amanda, hopefully she took my constructive criticism to heart & is going to be a better server buuuut I highly doubt it with the attitude she displayed.

After reading the mixed reviews, I really wasn’t sure what to think, but we decided to give Hana a shot anyway. Unsurprisingly, what we ended up with was as mixed as the reviews, starting with the spicy pork ramen. The broth was good and flavorful, but the noodles – which are kind of crucial – tasted like they were out of a Top Ramen pack, and the pork was chewy. Similarly mixed were my feelings about the dragon roll, which tasted fresh, but was kind of bland. The only thing that really stood out was the shrimp tempura, which was absolutely fantastic. The tempura was light and perfectly crisp, and not too greasy. Even better, it was hot and cooked through with no doughy bits. Seriously, it was delicious, and I’m tempted to go back and just order a table full! Finally, the service was friendly and courteous, and they seated us promptly, but it took forever to get our bill. It was nice not to feel hurried, but waiting 15 minutes after we’ve finished our drinks(and 20 after finishing our food) when the dining room isn’t that busy is a bit longer than I’d prefer. Anyway, Hana seems like it could be worth another shot. I have to believe that a place that can make tempura that amazing has to have something else that it does just as well.

Alberta Street is littered with delicious food and great shops… but that doesn’t mean every place is like that and Hana is a perfect example of a place that rides the coat tails of a popular neighborhood. Lukewarm customer service. Mediocre food. Nothing that would make me recommend or return. As a person who both lives and works in the neighborhood I was greatly disappointed by my first visit. The fish was poorly cut and not very fresh. The roll selection was repetitive and unappetizing. Staff was grumpy and disinterested. Too bad it’s a beautiful restaurant with a great location.

Hana has done it again, no I tell you it is not possible to get a bad meal in PDX. In my own neighborhood I was transported to a high rise in Tokyo… Two words Fiery Dragon. This is the roll to get. Tempura, cucumber, spicy tuna, tobika beautifully displayed and dutifully enjoyed. Every dish superb, wonderful atmoshere, good prices and fine quality, I like it.

Hana was one of best and authentic Japanese eateries I’ve dined at in awhile. Sushi, Ramon an my dish which I can’t spell or pronounce was superb. Place was hopping so service was slow but in the end worth the wait. Great presentation. Try this place if you are visiting the district it’s a keeper as the only places I can compare vitro are one of my favorites in San Francisco and a hole in the wall in north Miami Ronn just Ronn The hole in the wall food guy.

This place was EXCELLENT! We went to grab dinner around 8pm, the place wasn’t too busy at all. The waitress was very attentive, waters always full and checking in to see how everything was. We ordered 5 rolls between 2 people and it was SO much food. All of them were super good — my fav was one with mago and tuna. I will for sure be back!

I want to give 2.5 stars because it wasn’t that bad, but it wasn’t that good either. there are a lot better sushi choices just down the street. bamboo, daruma, zilla. Hana needs to step up its game, they used to be good but now they are just meh.
