Frazer Park

I love this park. The front end is sparse grass and a small children’s play area. There is a community garden, and a handball/​concrete area. The awesome part of the park is beyond that, past the garden.
The majority of this park is an off-​leash dog park without a fence enclosure. It is entirely awesome with lots of thick green grass, trees, squirrels, and a long slope that is fun to chase balls down. My dog loves it here and we see lots of good dogs enjoying the space.
The great thing about a dog park without a fence is you have to have a good dog to go there. To a certain extent you have to trust your dog to come when you call and not run into the street, and a dog that has that training usually has pretty good behaviors overall. People who can’t trust their dogs take them to fenced dog parks and you see the result — uncontrolled animals jumping and being rude — some seem to not even know their own names. Not at this dog park. Good dogs, good people, good interactions.

Frazer Park is a little rectangle of land over near the much larger, well-​known, and well-​equipped Normandale Park. While Normandale is a formidable hunk of grass and trees, with plenty of amenities, Frazer stands nearby as the bastard stepchild of parks. It’s attached to an elementary school and really just consists of a patch of grass and a play structure, with an off-​leash area. While it’s overall decently small, it does offer some glimpses of a view of downtown, as it sits on the rise of a little hill that extends up toward the ridge.
There’s really not a lot of reason to come to this area if you don’t live right near by. I guess maybe if Normandale is packed. Or if your kid goes to the elementary school that’s backed right up to this park. With the glut of great parks in Portland, you could go to any of the biggies to find more room to roam. But still regardless of the proximity to Normandale and the small stature, it’s a pretty decent little park. Better than some of the others I cross on my walks around town!
