Somehow I have missed writing a review on this place and I have now been here three times… So I must enjoy the pizza here. Flying Pie has been local to me for the past seven months being that I currently live in South Tabor, so it’s not a far trip over there. I have enjoyed a few meals here. Pizza and a calzone and I haven’t been disappointed by their food. For me, it’s their dough that gets me and makes me want to return. That and the lunch special of a slice with one topping, a salad and a drink for a reasonable price. My first time there, I got one of their calzones(called zappis) and basically it’s their small pizza folded in half, stuffed full of meat, veggies, cheese and sauce for a lot less of a price than their small pizza. It is easily two meals and very much worth it. I got one called the Zotti, which had pepperoni, jalapenos, onions and green pepper. It came with a side of sauce which also was very good. Simple and full of tomatoes(but a bit on the cold side). My next two visits were the lunch special, once with pepperoni and once with pastrami. Holy, holy hell do they load on the meat and believe it or not but pastrami on pizza should truly be a thing! It was in-freakin-credible! These are not some pansy-assed sliced either, these suckers can stand the weight of all that meat on them. The storefront looks like it’s been around for a long time, and their history(from their website) states that they’ve been at it for 30 years. They must be doing something right because this place is one of the better establishments in town, and it’s not pretentious. It’s just good food. The locals seem to love it and so do I. Enjoy.

I was hoping for a NY style pizza. This was not it. Way too many toppings for my taste. I pulled off half the pepperoni, and I love pepperoni. The crust is Meh at best. I did like the sauce. After giving it a few tries I think it’s time to move on. Glad so many others find it appealing but it’s not for me.

Every time I visit the area, I order The Supreme Combo, great pizza with lots on it. I can usually eat a family size pizza by myself, but these pizzas have so many delicious toppings that it becomes filling.

Flying Pie Pizzeria has the BEST pizza I’ve ever tasted. Loaded with toppings piled high and full of flavor. I didn’t really notice it before, we’ve been coming here for years. The only problem with this place is the atmosphere. I think I’ll order take out from now on.

We called in a to-go order and we arrived a bit early to pick it up. The inside has that authentic pizza shop feel. They have tons of old memorabilia, it’s vintage and tasteful. We ordered a medium pizza and breadsticks. Half Miss Piggy and Half Stromboli. Both halves were excellent, and full of flavor. Their breadsticks are a must. They’re only $ 0.25 a piece! Definitely a killer deal.

I hadn’t been to flying pie in at least a few years but I found myself in the area and decided to grab a pizza. It’s a very family friendly business and the staff was very gracious. They have a decent selection of alcohol on tap and the prices are pretty low compared to some pizza places. This low price does not reflect the quality of food though, they alway have good toppings. The décor is very eclectic and inviting. The inside is very large with multiple dining areas, you can tell the place has been here for awhile. Glad to see this place is still going strong.

Order an Italian sausage, American Bacon, Pineapple and fresh mushrooms on thin from Flying Pie! Then walk across the street to Montavilla Brewing with your delicious pizza and order one of their amazingly well brewed beers! May I suggest the Flam Tap IPA! Listen to some great music and enjoy!

Finally got around to trying this place out. The décor was typically PDX, meaning a little strange and didnt really go together, but exactly what you would expect for a place like this, in the area it is in. The ordering process isnt very clear to a newcomer, so that was a little clunky, but we got our order placed and then went to get salads while waiting for our pie. Salad Bar is generous in its offerings, all the best stuff you would find at your favorite ones(which there are not a lot of places still offering salad bars, so that alone was fabulous!). Seating is also a little tight fitting. But hey, its a busy place and they need to use all the room they have for all the people! It was BUSY, especially since we were there on a Wednesday evening, I think. The pie was tasty. Nothing overly exceptional in my opinion, to be honest… but it was good and there wasnt anything to complain about so that makes it worth trying again sometime. Staff was friendly for the most part… the couple of interactions that seemed less than friendly may have simply been the busy-ness of the evening, and/or the normal personality of the place. Some places are just like that and dont mean anything by it. Bottom line: We will try it again in the future, I am sure.

How is it possible I haven’t yet reviewed Flying Pie??? I’ve been eating here since I was a kid. That’s the best part of this place, it’s the pizza parlor you come to for life! These days I tend to get it to go, but still never disappoints :) The toppings are epic, but you can always ask for less if you desire. The crust is so fresh and fought and chewy but also crispy, basically perfect! The service is exceptional, especially considering most of the staff is high school aged kids. Wait times are average and their $.25 breadsticks are a good way to eat away time waiting :) I would highly recommend Flying Pie to everyone whose looking for an excellent family and local good pizza!

We were pretty excited to try this place out, since others have spoken so highly of it. It was the first part of a two-stage date night, with the second part being the Academy Theater next door. My poor review is really about the entrée we chose, which was the Veggie Calzone. In three words, choose something else. First, it took 45 minutes to come up. It was a busy Saturday night, but come on now. That was way too much time and about 15 minutes more than they told us it would take. When we opened the calzone, all the veggies just came spilling out. There was not enough cheese in there to hold anything together. We eat vegetarian a lot, but this was just bad. I don’t know if the original recipe was this bad, or if it was abandoned by the chef, but we just boxed it up to mix up with something tasty at home. We may give the place another try, but we won’t be trying the veggie calzone unless I’m anxious for another disappointment.

I ordered a calzone surpreme with Italian sausage to go. I was amazed at the huge size and it was accompanied by a generous side of Marinera sause. However, the pizza crust covering it was quite thin so that when cut, the contents oozed right out. The filling, such as it was, was somewhat thin & watery. The flavor was pretty good, but the contents of the filling was somewhat skimpy. It was impossible to pick up and eat. It was falling apart. Previously, I’ve enjoyed their Italian sub, but wouldn’t order the calzone again.

The crust is just meh(sort of tough and flavorless and cheap-tasting), but they certainly don’t skimp on the toppings, and the atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious, unlike a lot of places in Portland. Prices could be better, but that goes for most pizza joints in Portland(why your pizza so expensive and mediocre???). It’s good, but definitely not great.

This place is the epitome of what a family neighborhood pizza joint should be! This is my family’s favorite pizza place, & we’ve never been disappointed! The interior is very traditional(slightly outdated) but charming! Feels comfortable and homey. Very large, clear menu as well as printed ones. The staff is awesome. Very welcoming, high energy & helpful. This place is ALWAYS packed and even when busy staff stays on top of things. Now the goods– everything is OUTOFTHISWORLD. Pizza is hot, and PILED high with high quality toppings. They don’t cut corners here! Overall a 5⁄5 place! Highly recommend it.

3.75 This review is long overdue. We have experienced them 2x’s in the past 2 years. It was good but not mind blowing and not memorable. So much so that my husband couldn’t even remember eating there the year before. Each time I order extra extra sauce on my pizza. They failed both times. The sauce was barely noticeable. oh! and FYI-Don’t go there on a slow night and expect them to stay open when they want to close up shop a few hours early and call it a night. You will over hear them complain about it for sure.(11⁄2014) The house vegetarian pie was lame and was so lackluster that we left it at our friend’s house. We didn’t even bother taking the rest of it home with us. Which is truly odd for a foodie couple. We ordered extra green olives on it. They were barely noticeable. I tried my friends combo #2. Now that was pretty good. I would order that again. It would be better with extra sauce. Now last year when we dined in, I thought the atmosphere was cool. Old school NY style pizzeria restaurant with all the kitschy décor. I waltz down memory lane. Old school I dig it. I think they have a room either off to the side or in the basement a person could rent for a special event or party. I am not 100% sure but I think that is what I read when I was there. They have gluten free options and a large selection of toppings with great options like feta, artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, and a few different kinds of olives. It was ok. I would try it again. certainly not the house standard vegetarian pie. I would design my own next time.

Driving around random spots outside of the city is always fun– and even more fun when you run into a pizzeria like this joint. The place definitely seems like the neighbourhood spot to go and I can understand why. The atmosphere was laid back and friendly, and the pizzas were delicious! Massively stacked with toppings, perfectly thick with just the right amount of sauce, and cheesy gooey goodness to finish it off all for a great price? I’m sold. I might not be in the area much, but any time I am I’ll definitely be popping in.

It took Montevilla Jazz Festival to stop in to Flying Pie Pizzaria. They were one of the sponsors of the two day event down the street. We had tried their pizza at the Academy Theatre feel storefronts down. Its something about the marinara sauce. The simplest cheese or peletónu pizza is addictive. Tonight, we ordered a 14″ half vegetarian and half shake and bake. The vegetarian side was generous helping of mushrooms, olives, peppers, and tomatoes. It may have had a new more veggies. The shake n bake was bbq chcken, bacon, oni on, cheese, and bbq sauce. It really was a nice combination of flavors. I was full after 2 slices total and my partner after just 3. That means more for us to eat later… very nice! !

It’s AwESOMe, but expensive, but the memories! I always love their pizzas! ORDERED:(Combo Supreme) #1 Pepperoni, salami, ham, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, ground beef, & Italian sausage. Sm $ 17.85 Med $ 23.50 Lrg $ 29.60(XL $ 35.85) *We got the XL pizza between the two of us(between the both of us we only ate half the pizza) and had two lukewarm warm pitchers of beer! The dough is the ‘simple’ dough! That isn’t covered in herbs and considered/called, ‘gourmet’ ugh. It’s hand-tossed and tastes awesome dining in or out, or microwaved the day after, or the day after that! ***There’s no such thing as ‘gourmet’ pizza(in my mind). You can cram as many ingredients into the crust or add as toppings, but it’s just a pizza! *It’s only 10 minutes from downtown along I-84!

Thumbs up for everything they have going about this place. The décor is classic and what you’d imagine from a pizza parlor — family pictures, large dining spaces, and furniture stapled to the ceiling? It’s honestly pretty cool. The employees are friendly and didn’t pressure for an immediate order, even though there was a line forming. I personally didn’t get anything, but my man friend ordered their pizza sub. It looked ginormous and was under $ 7. I had a bite and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a great spin on the classic pies and slices a typical pizza place offers. Cool fact: You can check out some playing cards! Just leave something of yours with the staff(i.e. photo ID) and you can have a grand ol’ time. We played multiple games of Rummy and I had loads of fun(because I won almost every game).

My wife and I had a great afternoon wine tasting and decided to order a pizza to pick up on our way home to accompany the wine for the evening. Felt like a meat overload thick crusted pizza. So. We thought of Flying Pie. We were about 20 minutes out when we placed the order and was told 35 minutes. As I am writing this review I have been sitting here for 45 minutes still no pizza. Where I am sitting is about 6 feet from the pick up window where I can see the guy boxing up people’s pizzas and also calling names of the people that ordered pizzas that were ready to be eaten here. He looks over at me every so often and hasn’t said anything. I finally walk up to the window and ask when my order will be ready and he tells me it’s been ready the whole time I have been sitting there! WTH! He tells me I needed to come to that window and ask for my order after I paid for the order at the counter. Ok to be fair as busy and noisy as they were the person that took my payment told me to go by the pick up window and I misunderstood that I had to wait by the window until my name was called. You would think the guy calling the pizza orders that were ready would ask me if I needed help or maybe ask if I was waiting for a pick up order especially with the pick up receipt in my hand the whole frigging time! For me service or concern for the customers’ experience needs to be there for me to continue to frequent a business. Place is a neighborhood institution but lots of other great places to eat so probably won’t be back to Flying pie. Atmosphere reminds us of a rundown Chucky Cheese. They just happen to have better pizza.

Late night, we decided to check this out since it was the only place near our hotel that offers half and half with Chicken Alfredo flavor! When we got here, they were almost closing but they still gladly took our order. The lady that took our order seems like she was rushing and all, and we waited for a good 20 mins for our pizza to be ready, it was all worth it. It was good, especially the flavor I chose. Small is already big enough for two people, so it was a right choice. It’s also affordable so check this place out! Check this place out because they don’t skimp with their toppings! Haha
