Electrolysis Clinic of Portland

First review writer here, albeit a very knowledgable source at evaluating and recommending beauty & luxury services because I’ve experienced so many different treatments! From $ 20 Chinese massages in NYC, Miami and Portland to a full 8-​hour spa day in Dubai. Eyelash extensions, laser hair removal, waxing (hard and soft wax), coolsculpting, breast augmentation, dermatologists, makeup and hair artists, aestheticians, personal trainers, you name it! If it helps make me beautiful and I have a need (or want) for it, I try it… and I stick with it and swear by it if and only if it’s top-​notch!
My first appt for facial electrolysis was today with Sheila. Not only is she incredibly sweet, but she’s been doing this and only this for 37 years so «this ain’t her first rodeo.» She was insanely thorough and the treatment was virtually painless. So of course I had to give her a shout-​out on Unilocal and let all the young ladies know that this woman is experienced, more thorough than any waxer, tweezer or laser hair removal specialist I’ve seen in my 30 years of life thus far (16 of those years were spent utilizing hair removal services) and her rate is incredibly fair for the quality of work she does!
I’ll be seeing her for a year to rid my face/​chin/​neck, bikini line, thighs and armpits of hair so I’ll be sure to post an update as I continue receiving her services, but I have no doubt that I’ll be very pleased with my results. Ladies– skip laser hair removal and go straight to electrolysis– it works (my aunt and mother swear by it) and it’s the only FDA-​approved PERMANENT hair removal method out there. Don’t waste your money on lasers– give those hard earned dollars to real professionals who know what they’re doing and put your comfort and high expectations first and foremost! I had a few sessions with Sheila for electrolysis on my facial area.
As far as the atmosphere goes, the office is fairly professional, but not very relaxing in my opinion. The location itself is annoying, seeing as I have to pay ten bucks for downtown Portland parking each time I go there and then have to navigate the traffic on top of that. But let’s get to the actual business!
Sheila herself is a very nice woman. She’s very concerned about making you comfortable while she works, which I appreciated. She explains the procedure and how it works. She’s honest and up front about the fact that it will take a commitment and that you won’t see results overnight. My first treatment lasted about an hour (maybe even over), but she only charged me for half an hour so that was very nice of her.
I do have two complaints. One day while waiting for an appointment in the waiting room, I was waiting with another woman. When it came time for me to go in for treatment Sheila came out and when she saw the other woman she realized that she had run over on her time with the last patient and completely worked through this poor woman’s entire appointment time! The woman had to leave without service because it was now time for me to go in, and she needed to move her car so she didn’t get a parking ticket. Sheila apologized but if I were her I probably would have thrown in a free treatment or something to make-​up for the mistake.
My other complaint is that even though Sheila did explain Electrolysis to me, she never offered any sort of personalized treatment plan or gave me a good estimate about when I could start seeing results. I would have liked to know that rather than just having treatments until I hopefully saw results.
Ultimately, complaints aside, she seems to know what she’s doing and is genuinely concerned about her patients. The office is clean and I felt like I was in competent hands. Prices run about average. My biggest gripe is the location itself, but for the most part, Irena and Sheila have a good thing going!

Irina is great!

I dropped in for a consult with Irina McGaughey on impulse one day and became a regular client for about two years. Irina solved a problem I’d been frustrated with for most of my adult life, and the investment I made in time and money (about the same as a two-​week European vacation for two) was well worth it. If you haven’t tried electrolysis, be prepared for the commitment – it isn’t a quick fix but it’s a permanent fix, and it’s not inexpensive but it’s a great value. Irina is a real treat, the clinic is clean and professional, and my problem is now a dusty memory. Overall, a fantastic experience.

I came here to see Irina after having a few bad electrolysis experiences at other places in town. She was GREAT; she listened, was accommodating, and made the experience both pleasant and comfortable. While electrolysis is somewhat painful at times she did different things to mitigate the pain and she also spent a little over the hour I paid for making sure things were just right before I left. I am now coming back to her regularly and am so happy to have found someone to replace the person I used to use who moved back to NYC. Even though this is a bit pricey ($ 75/​hr) I realize there is rent to pay in a downtown building and the office is nice, clean etc.
