Downtown Value Inn

Only good thing about this motel is it has free parking. Although you have to wiggle in and out parking spots are so small. I worked there for 6 months, worse job I ever had. It’s family owned, they make and choose there on rules based on previous experiences. Example they don’t allow some black people to have guest and charge them a $ 100 deposit… This is racist and not right! They charge you an extra $ 20 per guest if you bring someone plus the guest can’t even hang out in the room if you don’t pay. They like to kick people out who get confrontational with them about unfair issues and not give them a refund. I would NEVER stay at this motel! My biggest regret is not filing a lawsuit against them, not only for what I had to deal with but for the customers I had to see deal with this nonsense and unfairness! This is lssue should be addressed to a higher authority, and this motel should be warned and fined for there actions. You can choose what customers have to put down and deposit and who can have guests based in there race! Also you can never speak to the manager he is either not there or the guy at the front desk tells you that just so he doesn’t have to deal with the issue. It’s honestly sad! So glad I left this job! I recommend don’t WORK here or STAY here! I would give them non stars if I could!

No hot water!!!

I was planning a trip for Portland and Seattle very last minute. I searched through tons of hotels in both areas trying to find ones that were cheap and had a check in age of 18+ (most hotels are 21+). I found this one and thought it was perfect. I couldn’t find the age requirement on the website so I just went ahead and booked it since I was leaving for the trip in 10 days.
I called the front desk to ask about the age requirement and to confirm the booking. The lady that answered the phone was very rude and disinterested in the conversation. She had a really hard time understanding me. I’ve never had a problem with people understanding me before. I work at a place where I answer phones all day so
I have to be able to speak clearly. She appeared to have no knowledge of how to use their system.
Once she finally figured out where my booking information was, I asked her what the age requirement was and she said it was 21 (I later confirmed this on the website as well. Not sure why hotels make this so difficult to find??) I had asked her to cancel the booking and she said that was fine. End of conversation.
I found a different hotel to stay at and figured everything was good to go. On the my second day in Portland, I checked my bank statement and noticed I got charged $ 144 from Downtown Value Inn. I immediately called them to correct this.
This time a guy answered the phone and as soon as I started explaining the situation he got very defensive and said «this is just our policy. I can’t do anything for you. You should have cancelled earlier.»
I had asked to speak with the manager since apparently the front desk staff doesn’t have access to the bookings (how do you do your job if you can’t access bookings???) The front desk said they would have the manager call me.
I received a call while I was out and couldn’t answer. Since I was already in the area, I decided to stop by and see if I could explain the situation better in person since apparently no one was able to understand it.
The man at the front desk was the same that I had spoke to earlier. He seemed to be trying harder to be polite in person but still came off as rude. He handed me the phone with the manager on the line. The manager was the only decent person I spoke to. He understood the situation and said he would speak with the original lady I «cancelled» with. He promised a call back with confirmation of whether I got my money back or not. It’s been two days and I have not heard back nor have I received a refund.
Again, I work at a place where there are strict cancellation policies ($ 100 non refundable deposits) that I have to hold true to everyone. I have had situations like this before and have always given a refund back. This is a mistake on your end. You have to take responsibility for what your employees say to their customers.
While I was in the lobby, the front desk staff tried making small talk with me by bashing the hotel I wound up staying at. He told me that he would have let me in even though I’m under 21. (why are you giving this rule leniency but your cancelation policy can’t be voided with certain circumstances???)
I’m a very polite person when dealing with front desk staff because, once again, I work at a place where I deal with the entire annoying and rude public so when I am the customer I try my hardest to be as polite as possible. Dealing with the staff at this hotel was really testing my patience. They have no customer service and they aren’t knowledgable about their workplace.
Since I can’t give zero stars, I’ll justify the one star by saying this is a perfect location if you don’t have a car and the place itself is pretty nice for a cheap hotel.

Dont do it!!! When we got in there the workers were real nice and helping us with our luggage. After we paid the money and got to our room, we just wanted to sleep after a long travel only to find hair and stains all over the bed sheets!!! ew! Maids weren’t even there so the sick manager came in to change everything while he was sniffling, touching all of our pillows and everything! Along with that our whole sink was clogged so any time we washed our hands the sink would fill up instantly, it was almost impossible to brush our teeth!
We had plenty of bugs and flies all over our food in the morning when we woke up! THEN we put the «maid service» sign up the next day only to come back to a dirty room that the front desk didn’t even care the maid missed!!! At the end of our three days I asked for some money back or some discount on the rate for our troubles and I could not even believe how stingy the people were about their money!!! Its like once they emptied my wallet they didn’t even care about us or our stay. Do me a favor and save yourselves, do not choose this place!

BLOOD STAINED SHEETS — Wish I could give this place negative stars. Booked a 5 night stay while relatives were visiting after woke up in the morning to the sheets completely turned down. Thats when we noticed two HUGE BLOOD STAINS on our sheets. Visited the front desk to confront them about the issue. The receptionist told us that her would get a maid in the room asap to change the sheets and that he would talk to the manager and see what he could do. My mother went to speak to the manager later in the evening he also said he would look into and see «what he could do». I returned the next evening to speak to the manager and was basically told that we should have told him immediately upon entering the room when we checked in so they could have moved us to a different room. They dont seem to understand the gravity of having slept on top of someone else’s BLOOD and how completely unsanitary and alarming it was. He offered to move us to another room yet again and basically said thats the best he could do. Ill never come back here. I would have taken my money elsewhere except most of the hotels are booked or outrageously overpriced. This places is disgusting and the customer service absolutely blows. Take your money elsewhere.

Alright, I must admit I was hesitant– extremely hesitant– about staying here. We stayed for one night only.
Be warned of a couple of things:
1. The sign in the window says «hostel»
2. The sign on the side of the building says «motel»
Essentially, don’t expect a Holiday Inn or even a La Quinta. You’re paying to sleep in a bed, and that’s about all. The location is great: safe neighborhood downtown. Everything seems clean– halls, room, beds, sheets, pillows, towels, etc. We did have to walk up two flights of stairs with our luggage, but hey, we chose not to pay for the Marriott. We had to circle the block a few times to figure out where to park, but it’s nice that the lot across the street is free. The staff at the front desk was polite enough. Don’t be scared, you will survive staying here.

about them not being dog friendly. Even though I have a registered service animal they were extremely rude and ignorant on state service animal laws etc. when I asked to use the restroom the front desk man indicated I could use the pizza place down the street. Mind you this is when we already paid for a room and we’re working on getting our refund from
. Just pick a different place. They didn’t care to be helpful or understanding therefore we didn’t care to give them almost $ 200. There are so many nice hotels within walking distance of this place just pick one of them.

Stayed here on a 2 day trip in early Dec of 2014. The man (Native American /​Hispanic looking and tall) at the front desk was friendly and helpful. He asked where are we from and if we had a map of Portland. Then he took a foldable map of Portland and started telling us the nearby train /​bus stops and then circled the restaurants or areas worth visitng nearby. And then he said that he has a really good room for us. I guess maybe someone canceled the room for that day and he upgraded us. When we walked into the room, it was spacious, clean and the bed was King size instead of the Queen size that I booked. There were 3 huge windows overlooking the streets outside. I liked that. Overall my stay here is pleasant. If you are looking for something cheap, minimal and decently clean, then this is it. The main reason that I pick this hotel is because of the location, its in downtown area and easy to commute to other areas. Safe neighborhood.

I was very hesistant to book a room here because of past sightings of bed bugs, but I took the risk since it was the cheapest lodging I could find in Portland to attend a conference. My room had a king bed, old school boob tube TV, alarm, phone, desk, chairs, nightstand, and a good amount of lighting. The bathroom had all of the essentials, but there were gaps between the shower fixtures and the walls within the shower. My towels and trash were taken out & replaced every day. There was no complimentary breakfast there and major FYI to all: no elevator. Other than that, it was in a convenient location to downtown, nearby access to trams, the front desk staff was hit or miss, and there’s a good bar/​grill next door to it to grab a drink and a quick meal.

One of the cheaper lodging we could find downtown. Stayed one night. Budget/​no frills in a decent/​central location & parking on site. Close to public transportation. Didn’t notice an elevator but I think there are only 3 floors.
Room was slightly larger and also less sketchy than I’d anticipated. A/​C, microwave, mini fridge. Free wifi (need a password to access). Toiletries & amenities sparse. Bed was fine, not overly hard or soft but kind of creeky (honestly I’ve slept on worse in fancier properties). We did not see any bugs.
For downtown I thought it was fairly quiet, although there was a nearby church bell that could sub as an alarm clock, if we weren’t already up. :)

So after booking this hotel for the Oregon Brew fest months in advance, I was pretty Leary after reading all the bed bug reviews and was seriously contemplating canceling my reservation and just using points at the Marriott down the way but the travel companion hates fancy schmancy hotels and likes the hostel appeal of meeting new people.
Check in was a breeze and Molly was super helpful and informative. Filled out the guest card quickly, she have us wifi instructions, charged my card and we were on our way.
First thing first, I checked the mattress. To my surprise as relief it looked like a brand new pillow top mattress. Score for us! The room is ok! Nothing fancy but what would you honestly expect for around $ 70 per night. I can see where people might be turned off. Our furniture looked new. TV was a old box, walls could use some crack touch up and the painting could be a little better but overall the room gets the job done.
We were in a room on the 2^nd floor over looking Montgomery and the trimet goes right by. It can be noisy from traffic but also the people at the bar patio which was right underneath us.
I didn’t have any problems with staff such as other reviews cited. I don’t know if is come back again but overall it was a good stay.

No bed bugs. As far as I know. But contemplated about giving it 4 stars or 1 star and here’s why:
Pros:
Clean, great location, newer furniture/​appliances, super cheap for downtown (paid under $ 100), easy access to catch trains to downtown, good pizza place downstairs, easy check in, free parking, within walking distance to electric car charging stations
Cons: Stairs-​no elevator, no guaranteed parking spot, staff dresses unprofessional, very very low clearance into the garage if your car is low
Here is why i wanted to give them 1 star. My husband was so pissed off because we scraped the hell out of the bottom of our nice car & even got stuck there bottomed out. What made it worse once we did scrape our way back out was that when we got into the lobby the owner says, «I was going to warn you guys but you had already started driving in» Seriously? There needs to be a sign there because we came in just fine earlier into the righthand side of the lot. And although the staff is nice enough, they don’t dress very well w piercings, tattoos & tshirts. I’m not against the style but for the lobby of a hotel they could step it up.
I would have given it 4 stars if not for the driveway incident & having to walk up 3 flights of stairs w our luggage. I’m surprised by the bad reviews also. The beds were clean & free of bugs & the place is nice. I would stay here again.

Terrible, terrible, terrible customer service. My boyfriend and I drove 12 hours to Portland and we were glad that they had 24 hour front desk service, but that was about it. When we arrived the front desk operator was rude and make snarky remarks, extremely uninformative about the surrounding area and parking, and didn’t even give me correct change (I had to do the math and correct him). We rolled in at 2:00 am and spent well over 30 minutes tying to find parking… We tried the lot but there were people double parked, one stall that was too narrow, and both the exit and entrance scrapped my car’s bottom. We ended up having to park in front of the hostel and having to repark at 7 in the morning… they also wanted to charge me to check out a little later.
I mean I get it, it’s a cheap «hostel,» but does it hurt to have SOME customer service? There are definitely nicer and cheaper hostels/​motel than this dirty bunghole.

I decided to go cheap when I visited Portland for a marathon. This place definitely convinced me that I need to splurge the next time I get a place to stay in Portland. No alarm clock, a TV that barely got any channels, and most of the channels were fuzzy and staticy.
The only advantages? Dirt cheap and good location. But there’s a reason why it’s dirt cheap. Avoid avoid avoid! Not worth the savings!

Bring your own blankets, for sure. Didn’t get bed bugs but it was a concern after reading other reviews.
Getting what you pay for. Downtown location but not $ 200/​night.
Good location with a pizza restaurant/​bar called Pizza Scmizza right below. The owner bought the whole bar a round! Added even more to our stay.
Trolley goes right by your window. Cute and convenient but a little noisy in the morning.
Didn’t have much interaction with staff, so can’t speak to that.
Parking lot is… interesting. Difficulty parking dependent on driver’s skill. Got a lifted 4-​Runner with a cargo box on the hitch in and out just fine (the box scraped slightly driving out but nothing bad) takes some skill and a little 4 wheel drive in spots but its free!
More for the youthful, low-​maintenance crowd.

WORST motel I have ever stayed at!!! PLEASE DO NOT stay here! The staff is beyond RUDE and extremely UNPROFESSIONAL. They do not understand the concept of customer service.
We were visiting Portland for the holidays and a good friend picked us up from the airport and brought us to the motel. The hotel desk clerk basically freaked out and said no visitors were allowed after 10pm (it was only a little after 10). Btw, this policy is NOT in writing and was NOT mentioned at check in… It was just sprung on us at the last minute. I explained the situation and said our friend would only be staying a little while. He reluctantly agreed. After our friend had left (he only stayed 30 – 40 mins), the clerk called the room asking suspiciously if «our guest had left the premises.» I said yes and he said he didn’t see him leave and that he was coming up to our room.
Next thing I know, he is knocking on the door and basically BARGED into our room at 11:00 at night, «searching the premises» for our guest who he thought I was hiding in the room somewhere. After I repeated that our friend had left, he stormed out of the room saying, «Well if you don’t like it, you can leave tomorrow! We will give you your money back!» I felt unsafe from his unwarranted entry and confused about his mistrust. It appears that the motel has had some «problems» with visitors in the past (IDK but am assuming maybe prostitutes or hookers bringing clients?). But regardless, we were good, paying customers, weren’t doing anything illegal, and still were treated like criminals.
We tried staying another night or two, but we just kept feeling really uncomfortable there, and so ended up leaving there early and getting a refund for the rest of the days. They didn’t even really care about losing our business. We went to EconoLodge down the street instead and had a much better experience.

It was clean, had everything we needed, and was the best price around. It is not called the Downtown Luxury Inn for a reason. If you want to stay (and pay) for a Marriott, that is down the road.
Our room was clean, an easy walk from anything around PSU and downtown, and right on the Green/​Yellow line.
That said, the parking lot sucks. And if you get in late, expect to park on the street and wake up early to move your car.
There are no «extras» with your room. If they put a little money into new shower heads and two nightstands in a room, that would do wonders to make the stay nicer. Also, it would be nice is they made the beds rather than just swapped out the dirty towels and emptied the trash.
Contrary to other reviews, our room was not dirty. There were no bed bugs. We didn’t meet any staff member who wasn’t very friendly. The place just didn’t have much to offer other than a place to sleep.
If you want a step up from a hostel, but don’t want to pay for a nice hotel, this is a good middle ground.

This place is really, really gross, and had bed bugs. I would not stay here unless you truly cannot afford anything else.
The bed bugs are obviously the worst, but the towels and sheets have holes and it was thoroughly dirty. The place smelled terrible, like a combination of mildew and human spoilage.
The desk staff was nice, but no level of smiles could make up for the place’s failings.

Value is in you know what you get. The front desk was very nice and helpful. She did have to «go check on my room» witch was kind of odd to me as I was over two hours after the check in time, I would think this would be known or completed. Still it wasn’t a problem with me as my room was ready. $ 5 cash deposit for keys that is returned on check out, not a problem again but would have been nice if that was mentioned on the website.
