City Target

You hear it all the time; «all Targets are the same. Why is this Target better than my Target?». Well my friend, that yick-​yacker is wrong. This Target is not the same as the other Targets. Why? Good question. Take a gander if you will. This is not your typical blasé compound that houses Up&Up; or Room Essential; or Merona; or Mossimo, nope. What is so aesthetically please that draws attention is the building itself — postmodernism at its finest. Spice is the variety of life. And if you have a car, I suggest leaving it behind. But yes, what nice looking structure.

I think this Target might be a tad racist. The first time I went there security followed me around the store. The second time I went I bought a iPhone charger and before I walked out the security guard asked me for my receipt. CLEARLY if you were watching me as close as you thought you were, you would have seen me purchase this charger. Target, you’re TRASH!

It’s wayyy smaller than an «average» target so if you need anything that isn’t basic you may have to search elsewhere. It’s a nice store though– problematic obviously seeing as though it is a Target. Consumerism. I don’t blame you though Target, it’s not just you feeding poison into our bodies, minds and souls it’s most of corporate America.

Is it weird that I didn’t even think to check if there was a Target in the area because this was the super hipster trip my college roommate and I have been wanting? But lucky me because there was a City Target smack dab in the middle of downtown Portland with a downstairs Starbucks at your convenience.
It’s actually upstairs but don’t worry– there’s escalators and elevators. I love the HI PORTLAND signage on the wall as you go upstairs. It’s just such a good sight for sore eyes, haha. The Target is pretty small, but it’s got everything that you need. Again, the whole no tax thing continues to throw me off, but I snagged a couple of travel items that were about a dollar and it was well stocked. It’s technically three levels, but two are of Target stuff.
For a City Target compared to the Bay Area, this was essentially a regular Target with everything that you would need, your local drug/​grocery store but it takes coupons and cartwheels.
For the bathrooms, you need a code but any employee will give you that. I say just head straight for the cashiers because it’s hard to spot a Red member to help you out. Also, the check out lines are weird, as in they’re really short. I mean it’s hard to explain until you look at it. But Target is still Target. It has what you need and has the things you don’t need, but end up buying anyways!
Oh, since it’s a City Target and a combination of being in downtown Portland, parking cost a hefty bunch but technically free with x. xx amount of purchase at this location. Take public transportation if you must.

Having a good sized Target store downtown Portland has made my life so much easier as a person who lives and works downtown! I find that a vast majority of things I need are on hand there. Although they don’t carry Just For Men for some reason. But great store, friendly staff and clean. Why I even do some grocery shopping there now and I’m impressed with the selection and prices.

It’s nice to have a Target downtown. It’s smaller then the ones in the suburbs but still has a good selection of stuff including groceries and is fairly easy to get in and out of and the prices are good.
It is located on the second and third floors of the old Galleria building across from the MAX stop. The space is bright and clean. With its own escalator up from the street and linking the floors.
There is not as many employees wandering around to help but it is well played out and stuff is easy to find on your own. Also when I have found an employee they have always been great.
Finally I like the escalator for carts. I’ve seen them elsewhere but they are nice.

Before I moved to Portland, City Targets were these mythical destinations, bellwethers of finally being in a «real» city. Something about the combination of escalators for shopping carts and a complete lack of convenient parking just screams «you’re in a cool place now, Matt!»
After over a year in Portland, my exuberance for City Target has wained, but I do still think it’s pretty great. They’re a pretty ideal stop for personal care stuff and housewares, and sometimes a guy just needs gym socks, right? I mean, it’s Target. On two floors. With an escalator for your cart! What’s not to like?
OK, so maybe the food section is what might be lacking. Then again, this isn’t a giant suburban Super Target. The produce all looks a little sad, and I would definitely suggest hitting up a market or grocery store for your perishables. But for all other things Target, this place does just fine.

Literally out of stock of everything I was looking for. Zero shower curtain rings, no wallets, and only one size of boxers. And no self-​checkout? Awful.

Parking is scary at night. Yes, there’s «free» parking downstairs in their garage, but keep in mind that the «free» parking means you need to buy at least $ 25 worth of stuff. I know that’s not a lot but still.
Limited options, compared to the Target at Beaverton but definitely worth to check if you’re in downtown.

Very clean, friendly staff. It was not crowded at all. They didn’t have what we were looking for, but that’s okay. I’m a fan of Target anyway. :)
They validate parking with a min purchase of like $ 20-​$ 25. Otherwise take public transit.

The City Target in Downtown Portland is just okay. Prices for most products are more expensive than online, but you can find the occasional deal if you want. The baskets of discount goods aren’t even as numerous as they are in the City Targets of pricier cities such as Seattle and San Francisco. They have a nice location and you can walk to the Alder carts. Don’t forget, this Target is on the light rail.
I walked into this Target looking for discount goods. I haven’t got something here in a while, but when I did, I got a Sony Bluetooth speaker for my computer, which I am looking at right now. The price was $ 50, around the price of Amazon at the time. There is also things here and there like wall hooks for a dollar. Searching frequently is your friend.
Your experience at City Target will depend on your own efforts.

I had a delightful experience here. I needed somewhat respectable silverware in a hurry, along with other kitchen items. I ended up finding everything I needed, and for less than $ 200. Mind you, I would never use these items in my own home, but they made for a wonderful last minute wedding gift for a cousin I really don’t like!

I went here the other day looking for a watch. I have to say this place was completely useless. It was around 8:45 on a weeknight, but the place was deserted. Nobody was at the entrance, I went up to electronics and there was no one to help. Just a few consumers milling around looking for someone to help them. When I found someone she was on break and was not much help.
In addition to being deserted the place seemed dirty and dingy. It was cluttered and dusty. I was not impressed. Target belongs in the suburbs. This reminded me more of a bad Walmart than a standard Target.

This store is convenient, clean and offers affordable goods in the Downtown area. There really isn’t much to write about if you’ve ever been to a Target, since it’s all the same stuff but with a more limited selection. They basically only carry the most popular items, since there is much less space than a typical big box store. I only go here because I get 5 percent back using my Target Red Card. Otherwise I much prefer going to Fred Meyer.

I stopped in because I was downtown and needed to return a couple of shirts I convinced myself I *had to have* and then thought better of. Easiest return ever. There was no line at the customer service counter despite it being a holiday (Way to staff appropriately, Target!) and a couple of beeps later, literally under a minute, my return was complete and I was on my way. Easy-​peasy.
I feel compelled to also mention that the selection at this City Target was impressive. I expected it to be noticeably more limited. It wasn’t. But for the reality that I was on my bike and without a pack, I totally could have left with more than I needed (as is the case with Target and their reasonably priced and completely swoon-​worthy selection of goods).

Well if you need it you need it. But I found this place up to a third more than Amazon Prime for equivalent items. Hint this store is right in the Max line so they are paying exorbitant Portland City taxes. This is for the train which no one rides. Take a pass unless you need it in an emergency. Or browse here and buy elsewhere. The electronics guys were helpful and not too pushy. It was clean comfortable and quiet especially for downtown Portland.

Maybe the third time really is the charm. I’ve not visited this City Target very often (only three times in not quite two years) even though I am downtown fairly often. It just seems kind of daunting to have to use the escalators or the elevators to get around to the different departments and move from one floor to the other to get to cashiers. Of course, this makes me laugh at myself because I gladly hike around the large suburban stores without a squeak and enjoy the trip. I think the key here is slowing down in City Target and just getting comfortable with the layout, which is more or less what I did Friday evening after Happy Hour at Jake’s Grill (or maybe it was I was just simply relaxed and happy from the Lemon Drop I had at Happy Hour). Perhaps Starbucks on the first floor should think about serving wine and beer before customers traipse on up to explore and shop.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed Tamara C’s review and how she remembered her experiences and what used to be in this old Galleria space back in the 1980s. One of my grandmothers worked in this much-​renovated space back in the 1950s and 1960s when it was a department store called Olds and King (

I’m sure Olds & King seemed daunting to the citizens of Portland with all the escalators and stairs once upon a time. I guess if they could tackle the Olds & King/​Galleria/​City Target space, then it’s up to me to figure it out and get on with it because it is pretty hand to drop off and pick up cat food on the way back through downtown on the way home.

This Target location suuuure is quite convenient in its location– but really, it’s like an «abridged» Target here– cozy and petite!
Like and appreciate the convenient Starbucks downstairs. Enjoy the design, which to me is a miniature tit4tat of the Minneapolis flagship store along Nicollet Mall— just no skywalks!!!

A great use for the galleria. There is a Starbucks downstairs, and almost as good of a selection as other target stores. If I spent more time downtown, I would really appreciate this.

Super cute greeting on the wall when riding the escalator up. Check it. Lines are short and staff friendly.
