The Center for Movement Arts hosts one of the only modern dance classes I’ve seen in Portland. The tone of the space and the class that I take is professional and challenging, but still recreational. It’s the Goldilocks blend for me, not extra technical(i.e., OBT) yet not super new-agey or too basic or filled with kids under the age of 16(like some that are offered through community centers, etc.). I should note that they do have kids classes, but the one I take is geared towards adults. The space itself is not huge, so moving across the floor can sometimes prove to be slightly limited, but it does make for more intimate class sizes, so your instructor knows your name and can help you improve and avoid injury. Cause, let’s face it, we’re adults now, so when that knee goes out, it might not bounce right back without a little TLC. It’s also in a great location, just along the edge of Ladd’s Addition, so parking is usually a breeze, and after class I’m often seen walking through the gorgeous neighborhood to wind down. If you’re looking for a class(they also offer jazz, ballet, ballroom and Pilates), I’d certainly suggest you give it a try.
