The best chicken and waffles I’ve ever had in my life so far. I don’t remember the last time I ate something this good. I got the regular spice and it was perfect, my brother got the super hot but he likes really spicy food so he’s gonna try the xxx hot next time. Dress warm on a cold day because there isn’t really seating space inside. I’ll definitely be back because I want to try everything on the menu. I was craving cornbread but they didn’t have it ready yet. overall though, definitely the best place. Wish they were open later!

Solid chicken and waffles. On a sunny, pleasant day last week(January in the PNW, who knew?) I swung in for a plate. It was just so utterly exactly what I was needing that my expectations were vastly exceeded. Perfectly fried, crunchy chicken breast atop a good sized waffle with two pieces of bacon and maple syrup on the side. I chose the«Regular» spice level, which I’ve decided is too mild for my taste. I think. Anyway, after savoring lunch with a semi-exotic«Mello Yello» my first realization is that it filled me up perfectly. I wasn’t stuffed silly, nor was I left wanting more. Wonderful. The store itself is subject to the same«restrictions» as the other micro-restaurants in the vicinity. Namely, the tiny little space is quite simply the counter and the kitchen. Bethany Village has done a lot to improve the sidewalks outside, though — there are shade screens, stools and tables and for the first time I noticed heaters up above. Nice touches. They’ve also got beer! Decent selection, too. I believe they fill growlers as well. Lots more to try for me, here, although not too often, because it’s obviously not very healthy. Looking forward to trying tenders and a variety of sandwiches.

Weird location for fried chicken, but very good and flavorful fried chicken. Chicken was moist and crust was crunchy, but somehow it was not oily. Great little place for fried chicken.

This was the best chicken sandwich I have had in a long time. There were«levels» of hotness to choose from. Being a wimp I chose the«regular» and it was plenty spicy. They did have a XXX heat but no thanks. The service was good and price was good for the portion size! DEFINITELY going back! Thanks for the grub!

Cackalack’s Hot Chicken Shack sits at the very corner of the new Bethany food pod. This little Mecca for chicken lovers is easy to spot with it’s bright yellow interior. The staff was equally bright and cheery. The guy at the counter is a hoot! Despite it’s small size Cackalack’s Hot Chicken Shack offers a rather good sized menu. Among the offerings are wings, salads, sandwiches, and fried chicken pieces. Cackalack’s also offers a great selection of sides and add ons. On my visit the restaurant was offering some craft beers and a hard cider. After perusing the menu I decided to try the Chicken & Waffles. For $ 11 I received a beautifully breaded and fried chicken breast placed on top of a large buttermilk waffle. On the side were two slices of bacon and a cup of maple syrup. Cackalack’s Hot Chicken Shack offers their customers four levels of spiciness: «naked, regular, hot, and XXX.» With my Chicken & Waffles I went for the«regular.» If my dish was«regular» then I would sure hate to taste«XXX.» Land Sakes! By the time I finished my Chicken & Waffles I was stuffed to the gills and breathing fire. Not sure where the heat was coming from but believe you me it was there! Oh well, guess I shouldn’t have been surprised with a restaurant by the name of Cackalack’s Hot Chicken Shack. Hot seems to be the operative word here. Would advise diners to know their tolerance to spiciness before ordering at Cackalack’s. However, despite the spiciness I would still recommend Cackalack’s Hot Chicken Shack as a great place to enjoy some good old American fried chicken!

I was super excited to try out this new place since I had it on my book marks for awhile now but after my encounter today I don’t think I will be coming back. I’m very upset about my experience. Came in tonight at about 7:30pm on Labor Day and I was greeted by the cashier(brown hair, tattoos) who seemed uninterested in her own work place. I asked her about the establishment and she simply said its been here 6 months. You would think you would try to have a conversation with your clients to promote more business but I didn’t get that feeling at all. She was more interested in listening to her trap music that was on blast and closing the business that was 15 minutes to closing. Upon ordering my one burger(comes with fries) and 3 piece chicken tenders(comes with fries), she told me all of the French fries were in the box of chicken tenders and the burger was kept separate in a bag. I looked at it in the car and I felt jipped for the amount of money I paid. In my head I said«that this had to be a mistake. I got like 10 pieces of French fries for 18.00 meal?» She combined it and I felt like it wasn’t worth my money. I came back to ask her if the burger came with fries and she responded with«its with the chicken tenders in the box. It comes with little fries» I made a confused look and said«OK» since it looked like I was bothering HER closing. After eating my meal, the flavors and spices are wonderful and were absolutely spot on. However, the customer service that was provided to me and feeling like I didn’t get enough French fries for amount I PAID… I won’t be coming back. It’s super unfortunate.

I waited for awhile to give a review. The chicken is A+ and now they have beer. Just drank an Occidental Pils. The shizzle.

This chicken is good and HOT! The french fries and cold saw are good and also spicy. Here is a tip, buy a drink you are going to need it. This place is a bit like a food truck, they have no tables or chairs inside. They have some outside or you can always go eat by the fountain. It usually takes about 10 minutes to get your food once you order it.

**Insert vocal impersonation of Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys here** Pretty DECENT chicken shack guys. We ordered two root beers & two Jalapy sandwiches(as hot as possible), and spent about $ 20, maybe slightly over. This does not include fries, but once you see the size of the sandwich you understand why. The sandwich consists of a fried chicken breast, bacon, jalapenos, cheese — and some sort of white sauce with a consistency between ranch and tzatziki– all between two large sesame buns. I was hesitant to bite into the thing, because this possibly tummy-ache-inducing-red spice juice/grease-mixture created a steady, 1 minute drip into the basket. Yes, my health conscience kicks in occasionally. Once I finally managed to get a proper grip on the buns and squish the mass down for a bite, everything tasted very, very fresh. I like that the amount of cheese, strategically placed, did not overwhelm the jalapenos and create a sloppy mess. And, hey. no tummy ache. Next time I think I’ll go for a more simple selection, maybe just the fried chicken breast and pickles — if possible. By the way, if anyone that works at this Cackalack’s location reads my review, please let me know if it’s possible to get one of those t-shirts with the foxy chickenbird on ‘em. RULIN’!

They now have a actual building in Bethany village. I went in and got the boneless chicken breast in hot sauce, it came with Texas toast and I got coleslaw. The chicken was nice and crunchy, I should have went the xxx sauce because the hot sauce was mild for me. The chicken had great flavor and tasted good. My only complaint would be the cole slaw could have been creamy and on the chicken the outside breading kept falling off the breast but it did taste good. They also had a bacon cheddar biscuit and the lady was nice and gave me one to try and it was good. This is a takeout restaurant but there is outside seating.

Not for those watching their figure. I had their fried chicken/bacon/cheese sandwich. It was good, the cashier warned me the«regular» strength seasoning had a kick to it and she was right, it certainly did. too much for me actually. Note to self– get the un-heated/seasoned one next time. I’ll return the next time I want a 1000-plus calorie lunch.

This review was a difficult one for me. Honestly the food was actually very good. While at the same time It was one of the most unhealthy meals I’ve had in quite sometime. The place is small, no seating, unfriendly staff and appeared to be dirty and disorganized. The grilled cheese restaurant next door seemed to warrant most of the outdoor sitting, so it’s difficult to find a place to sit and eat. If I was 20 years old and could eat and burn off a 1200 calories sandwich I’d consider returning. Unfortunately for me, I won’t be returning.

This place is great! The fried chicken wasn’t even greasy compared to other forms of fried chicken that I’ve had. The XXX sauce is muy caliente. The perfect amount of spice. Thank you. I’ve been looking for a local chicken and waffle joint with no luck. Then I looked on Unilocal and found this location. We will be back for more.

The initial delirium upon learning of the new west side locale has been tempered by a few perhaps hard to avoid factors: It’s tucked in a busy busy strip mall, making basic access difficult; it’s a hole-in-the-wall storefront w/no indoor seating(this is Portland, people, that means it’s de facto, if not de jure, carry out only, about 8 months out of the year). This offers little upside vs. the foodcart East Side forerunner. The good news is the food is a solid continuation of the East side afterburn… the wings won raves at a recent work potluck. I didn’t personally care for Cackalack’s biscuits or their fries(way too heavily seasoned), but SOMEBODY sure gobbled them all up w/great and hasty dispatch. Finally, and this is not by any means a deal-breaker, but there was no diet soda or ice water avaaliable. and if I recall correctly, there had been BEER available at East side. Not so, here in teetotalin’ Bethany. Then again, QFC is right next door, and since it’s a carry out-themed eatery anyway…

I was really looking forward to some great chicken based on reviews… Even more so because it was to be found in the burbs. I do realize that fried chicken is not the easiest to cook-Timing the frying right to keep the coating golden while allowing enough time for the chicken to cook through is a challenge. My chicken breast(only got the breast because they were out of legs/thighs) seemed like it had been boiled or microwaved prior to coating and frying. The coating was flavorful and crisp, but the chicken had a very dry, rubbery texture. The French fries were greasy and limp as well. Not sure if it was just a bad night… But, it seems like there is a breakdown in the excecution of a very cool concept!

Got a blazer chicken sandwich here for lunch today. The fried chicken breast was the true star, spicy, crunchy, large and fresh from the fryer so very good! The pickles had a somewhat floral taste and for a homemade pickle was kind of off putting, I couldn’t tell if they were supposed to be sweet or dill or some hybrid of both? The brioche bun couldn’t keep up with condiments and sauce and fell apart before I finished eating the sandwich. I liked the herby homemade ranch. The coleslaw was ok. I ordered a side of coleslaw for a dollar and it was like ordering a side of ketchup, a very small amount. I loved the glass bottles of various flavors of Fanta and Coca-Cola. The chicken was very good and I know I will want to order more again.
