Worst Tuna Melt I have ever encountered. It’s my favorite sandwich and I eat them often. I was too nervous to eat the second half, also way too expensive for a sandwich.

First off, I pulled two hairs out of my carne asada fries. Then I had the pleasure of one of the cooks being a prick because I let him know when he called my name that my order had been to go. He said«oh» and like a 2 year old, started throwing around trays and throwing my food into to-go containers, and he actually glared at me because he had to correct something that wasn’t a big deal and took all of 30 seconds to take care of, if that. He most definitely is one of these transplants from God knows where– I’m thinking Midwest– who has moved here in the last 5 – 10 years and has contributed to turning our city into a lame cesspool of contrived weirdness and inauthentic counter-culture. When will these people get sick of the rain and LEAVE??? Thankfully, the guy who actually handed me my food in a bag was very kind and had a smile on his face. I feel sorry for him having to work with that guy. The location in SE is great; polite staff and laid back atmosphere. The Alberta location feels angry and like the staff hate being there. And because Alberta now sucks anyway, the people who hang out on Alberta aren’t from here go in there; they don’t know the real Portland and perceive the hostility as hip and trendy. I definitely won’t be visiting this location, esp because hair seems to be a complimentary condiment. No thanks.

What a bunk. High prices for small portioned less than average sandwiches. Walked in and was not greeted at all. I had no idea what to do being my first time. There’s a black board on the right which is the menu. The interior doesn’t look too shabby but not a lot of lighting and there were only a few people there. The front counter person looked tired and seemed bored. We ordered the pulled pork and roast beef sandwiches with chips. Both sandwiches were pretty flat and the bread was tough like you had to sink your teeth into it and rip it off with some force. The pulled pork was drenched in sauce like when you bite into it the back end really slides out. The paper wrapping was drenched in oil and got my hands messy. The sauce wasn’t too bad but it was overboard. The roast beef was pretty dry and I think I got some sort of chewy parts; maybe the fatty part. To end it, the chips were just kettle chips in a bag, so it was nothing special. I was really hoping to like this place but the food was a miss and did not hit the spot. For being in such a good location I would expect better. There is some uniqueness to this place but for the price and what you get, I would not go here again.

I went here on November 16th with my Mom & sister for lunch. Searching on Unilocal to find a quick bite. We found this place. We LOVE sandwiches so we THOUGHT this would be our spot. Following some Unilocalers, I ordered the pork cubano sandwich. Not so great, it was bland & salty. This place doesn’t have a big selection of sandwiches. So I felt like I was stuck ordering the pork cubano. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Save your $ 10+ dollars and go somewhere else.

¼/16 update. After several more visits and countless do-overs b/c they just cannot seem to take direction, we have given up. Love their menu. Would like to see a GF bread option so our whole family could eat here. Of the four times we’ve been here, they got the order wrong twice. They were nice enough about fixing the problem, but we had to drive back over there to fix a take out order — glad it wasn’t 8:00 at night. Food is really good. Too expensive though. We can’t go often, that’s for sure.

You have to do more than serve a decent meal: You also need to treat your customers like you care for them. I had read about Bunk for several years but never made it to one of their locations before leaving Oregon for Idaho two years ago. Bunk’s Cubano sandwich made Willamette Week’s 12 best foods. I had already tried four of those on the list and figured Willy Week’s recommendation was good enough for me. When I entered, I told the guy behind the counter there was one for lunch. Without saying hello, he told me you order at the counter. Oh, OK. After ordering, he didn’t thank me or let me know I could seat myself anywhere. When my order was ready, they called out my name and I picked it up at the window. I thanked the guy there. He didn’t respond to me or a woman who picked up an order to go a few minutes later. Whatever. The sandwich itself was good, if a little spend at $ 10 and only a handful of potato chips as the only accompaniment. I did get a laugh at the counterman. He carried a coffee cup with him wherever he went, even when he came out just to kick a stool back into place. I passed him as I left and he didn’t bother to thank me. By that time, I didn’t expect anything more.

We wanted to watch Blazers @ Suns and have dinner, after we received a very poor treatment in another place we finally find this bar, they greeted us, they had good recommendation and we could finally watch the game. Good life IPA is great and the roast beef sandwich delicious(recommend by one of the crew members) we would just suggest to add a better selection of sides like french fries, fresh salads or fresh veggies. But this guys made my night by letting me watch the game. Thanks

The pork belly cubano was a big let down. The pork belly, which is where bacon comes from, is supposed to be fatty and juicy but this was tough and rubbery. The rest of the sandwich was fine and the chips were good but the main meat of the sandwich was an abomination.

Another one of those«boutique» restaurants that pop up in PDX. This one specializes in sandwiches. I had a shrimp po boy that was a bit masked by the hot sauce, but still had significant tang to it. The house made lemonade was terrific.

I’ve tried the Cubano at the convention center food truck and the pulled pork at this location. The Cubano was very delicious and the service was great! However, the pulled pork was too oily and the service was«meh» here.

Says it in the name. This place is bunk. The third and final time I have come here. I love Cubanos but this was just a sandwich with the right textures but everything tastes the same. Like a mush or flavored meat. The service is ‘meh’ at best. And for 10 bucks I should get a decent side of cheap chips. Literally a babies hand full. Counted 10 chips. 1 chip for every dollar of SADwich I had. I hoped for a better experience. But came up pretty short. I am full now. That’s the positive. And I get to listen to yuppie conversations… haha. Better meat ball Sammy next door at Via Chicago. I hope to see some changes… till next time I am hungry and am willing to pay for this food.

Rarely do I try what was an average place to me the first time, a second time. Because I had heard so many great things multiple times from numerous people I decided to do just that and chalked my first experience to bad luck. I was sorely disappointed that this place just didn’t cut it for me at all. I took out of state company again to this place and have now tried 5 different sandwiches to which all have become below par in my book for a specialty sandwich shop. The only sandwich that I did enjoy was the meatball one. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Very good sandwiches! Large portions, three of us shared two – grilled chicken salad with avo, and the Cuban – were definitely not disappointed. Indoor & outdoor seating, quick service, no line, offered nice, large glasses of ice cold H2O on a 90-degree afternoon. Pleasant experience to say the least.

I wanted to like this place. I really did. We came here after a long 6.5 hour hike at Eagle Creek. At this point we were starving, and ANYTHING usually would appease and taste great to a hungry stomach. Right? Following the herd of other Unilocalers, I went with the pork belly cubano sandwich($ 10). When it was brought out, I was utterly disappointed at how small and flat it was(see photo)! There was a thin slice of pork belly, and some ham with a pickle and cheese. Still, it must be good if everyone recommends it… Right? It was decent at best and easily something anyone can put together with a foreman grill at home. Granted, magical things can happen with a foreman grill. How disappointing! I also got to try some of their famous carne asada fries($ 8.50), and what a rip! Coming from Southern California, we know our carne asada fries well, and Bunk did not deliver. It also doesn’t help with the general feeling of the place when all the workers here seem bored out of their minds. Overall, not terrible and not great, but an average place with above-average prices.

After seeing this place on the food network several times, I stopped by the Alberta location yesterday. I was not disappointed! I ordered the pork belly cubano which tasted delicious! Great seasoning, meat cooked perfectly and a perfect portion. What I like about this sandwich is it isn’t too messy. The staff was extremely friendly and this place just bled the essence of Portland. I highly recommend stopping here!

Portland may have an aversion towards national chains, but they do love their local chains. Salt and Straw, Lardo, Little Big Burger and Bunk Sandwiches all have multiple locations throughout the city. Portlanders know what they like and every time these businesses build an additional restaurant, long lines are quick to follow. I’ve known about Bunk Sandwiches for quite a while, but never seemed able to pull the trigger and give them a try until they opened their newest location on Alberta Street in Northeast Portland. Fate, it seems, was kicking me in the butt to finally give them a try. Alberta Arts is my favorite neighborhood in the Rose City and now that Bunk had a location there I had to go. Another bonus with the Alberta location is that it’s far roomier than the other locations and it has a full bar, which is very nice. You order at the counter at Bunk, just like you do at so many other places in Portland. Cue the rant. People, people, I’m not sure why so many of you have such a difficult time with order at a counter! there’s a huge menu above the spot where you order and if there’s a line, then you need to be looking over that menu and deciding what you want to order. If you need more time, then let the people behind you go ahead of you. Don’t waste everybody’s time by chitchatting with your friends, oblivious to everything and then asking for a menu when you get to the register! It’s not rocket science! Having said all that, though, Bunk does have a lot of delicious items on the menu to tempt you. I was torn between the Pork Belly Cubano and the Meatball Hero. As you can see from the photo above, the Meatball won out. I wasn’t disappointed. I thought that treating this sandwich as open-faced was pretty inspired. It allowed the sauce an even distribution throughout the surface of the sandwich. The marinara itself wasn’t heavy and tomato pasty. It was light and fresh. The meatballs weren’t heavy or dense either. They were tender, flavorful and, yet, held their shape very well. Being that the sandwich was open-faced meant that the cheese had a better interaction with the broiler. It was almost like a neapolitan pizza — bubbly cheese with random, golden brown caramelization and a slight char of the edges of the bread. It’s a great sandwich! One of the better meatball subs that I’ve had. It would be hard to go wrong at Bunk Sandwiches, all of their sandwiches look great. I look forward to eating my way through the menu!

I came here one evening(a little bit past 9pm). I’ve had Bunk sandwiches a few times this was my first time at this location on Alberta. First off, this wasn’t my first choice, I wanted LBB but immediately when I walked in, they turned me away because it was 9pm and they were closed…(Hello perhaps lock your door). In any case this isn’t about LBB. We walked in and it was dark and some chairs were already up. There were several employees just kind of staring at us as if we intruded on them. I asked if they were still serving, the sign read 10pm. We didn’t want to be THAT guy who is keeping everyone from going home. We ordered a couple of sandwiches, the food came out quick and we wolfed it down quickly. I didn’t exactly feel like we were welcomed. Food was good which is why the 3 stars, perhaps would have given a 4 if I didn’t feel like I was intruding. In short, if you’re going to be open to 10pm please make it seem like it!

Bunk Sandwiches might just be the Ike’s of Portland. I stopped during a recent Sunday lunch time and ordered some über delicious roast beef sandwich combination to go. I thought I was in a hurry to get to the airport(and eat it there), but in hindsight I should have grabbed a chair, ordered a beer, and enjoyed my Alberta Street moment. As for the service, it was perhaps a bit detached and inwardly focused(which seems to be a cultural norm in Portlandia), but otherwise my sammy was in the bag within what I consider normal wait time. I also thought the price was a little on the high side, but on the other hand, I sure did get a lot of great food for that money.

Great little spot with an extensive sandwich menu, something for everyone including gluten free and vegan options. We checked out the menu online before arriving, meatball sandwiches for the guys, chicken salad for me. My daughter chose the blt which is no longer on the menu, plan B was the egg sandwich. All the sandwiches were great, served with chips and we ordered fries to go with. Plus a bonus item of carne asada fries which were awesome. Guy working the counter wanted to be somewhere else, but aside from having to wait an extra 10 minutes for the fryer to be ready, lunch was great. Couldn’t finish my sandwich, so asked for a to-go bx. Guy gave me a paper wrapper for my sandwich. Long drive home and sandwich leaked all over everything else in my bag.(lame) One order of plain fries serves 4.
