Bird Hut

Bird Hut cares about profit, not parrots. Ive visited the store numerous times, and many sales persons have confirmed that they buy captive-​bred parrots, and sell them for the pet trade. On one visit, when I asked the store clerk to disclose where they purchased their birds (to make sure they weren’t from a «bird mill»), he flat out refused; only stating that the birds primarily came from «local breeders» (like that matters) but also admitting that they fly baby birds in from other states like California, and Florida. When I asked which breeders (local or out of state) he bought from, he gave a lame excuse about protecting «breeder privacy.»
There are no laws that prohibit a pet store from disclosing where a pet store gets its parrots here in OR, so this is obviously a silly, self-​preserving response. If you go to Birdhut, ask them where they got their birds. When they give you a half-​ass answer, tell them to go pluck themselves… and adopt a bird instead.
If you still aren’t turned off by this horrid business, talk to the owner. When I spoke to him, he readily stated, «this is a business, not a rescue, so yeah… birds are commodities.»

I go here all the time. Sometimes the workers are rude but lately the others are much nicer. Took my white face cockatiel Zanzibar here to get his wings cut, for $ 2. After about 30 seconds, they were done and put him in his carrier. Unfortunatly, he darted for the opening and one of the workers pressed down slightly. Luckily she lifted it and he was fine, starteld but fine. I could tell she celt guilty, a sign of a good animal lover, and I reassured her he was fine and tough. The other woman gave him some millet, free of charge. Love the place, and it is where I got Zanzibar from in January of 2012

My son has been wanting a budge for years. He’s had a terrible year and has been very sad and depressed, so when my mom came to visit she wanted to get him his bird. We wanted the very best for him so we didn’t go to petco and went to bird hut. The lady was thrilled to sell us nearly 200 $ worth of cage, toys, food, treats and a $ 50 budgie. Well, he died suddenly about a week and a half later, DEVASTATING to my son.
I figured bird hut would want to know if one of their birds dropped dead not even two weeks after buying it. I mean, it could be a disease! So I wrapped him up and took him there with me assuming she’d want to look him over. WRONG
when I went in she was a totally different person than she was when I bought things from her. She was rude, cold and downright cruel and just said «birds die!» Ummmm… I’m thinking if you’re a bird lover who sells birds, you want to know why a bird you just sold died! I assumed she would offer to sell me another one, but she just dismissed me as I stood there choking back tears.
Needless to say, I reported them to the BBB

Loved the birds! Terrible customer service. The lady was downright rude to my husband. She seemed unwilling to help and was really short with us. I’m tempted to go back so I can see the birds but I think her rudeness far out weighed.

Birds rule my life. And Bird Hut makes that a reality.
I’ve always owned birds since I was in elementary school, in one way or another. But since I moved to PDX, my birds have come from here. Even when it comes to budgies (parakeets for y’all non-​birdies) they are superior. Most are hand raised and therefore MUCH better pets than what you’d see from Petsmart/​Petco. Ever.
I have two cockatiels from the Bird Hut since 2007. Both are healthy, happy and… birds. One hates hands because that’s her (but loves sitting on people) and the other is a gorgeous Albino who loves snuggles. It just shows that all birds have their own quirks.
The Bird Hut consistently sells birds that are well bred, healthy and on top of their game species wise. Hand-​fed cannot even start with how much that matters for GREAT pets. It makes the WORLD of difference.
They also have great services. My oldest ‘tiel hates getting her nails/​wings trimmed so if I want that to happen, I take her here. The younger ‘tiel is easier to manage but I take them together, but they get cut/​trim and it’s all good. The workers know their birds to death and know how to handle them kindly. They have parrots too — like a ton — lovebirds, parrotlets, macaws, African Greys, etc for all your parrot needs.
The toy/​treat selection is INSANE. I love it. I’ve never left without a new toy. They have millet by the bag/​pound and it’s larger than what you get anywhere else. And cages, treats, etc. You will not go wrong here.
Basically, as a true bird lover, this place is superb. You cannot go wrong here. I recommend times a ton.

I love this place. I have an old cockatiel and two parakeets. I buy all my supplies from the Bird Hut: seed, treats, toys, cuttlebones, etc. The birds here are very well cared for. The larger birds get time out of their cages every day. The cages are always being cleaned when I’m there. I’ve never seen any sick or stressed out birds; they all have a variety of food and plenty of toys in each cage. I visited the Bird Hut four or five times to check on the birds before I started doing business with them and was impressed. I brought my old cockatiel in to have his nails clipped and they were very good with him (and good natured when he decided to fly around lobby). Cages are sold at excellent prices, too.

i flippin adore the bird hut! they have great play gyms for your bird at a great price, good priced food and treats, and great customer service. i sometimes just go there to say hello to some feathered friends.

I have been going to the Bird Hut for the past 3 years. We have purchased two birds, a Green Cheek Conure (2008) and a Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (2010). Diane, Brian, and Kim are a God-​send when coaching on raising the birds. They have a great supply of toys, food, and cages. The birds are let out of their cages for play time in the recreation room every single day. They take great care and show love for all of the birds. I am proud to have come to know the crew at the Bird Hut and I’ve referred many of my friends their way. I love supporting small local business as I own one myself. It’s a great feeling to be loved by your bird and to love the Bird Hut!

Let’s get this straight from the start… we inherited an Amazon parrot & the bird hates everyone except my husband. While this may seem okay, it’s not. I am the one who changes the cage, feeds ‘Papageno’, gets fresh water, toys, and basically tries to have something other than a dysfunctional relationship with my green feathered house guest from hell. We had our system down in Berkeley, but in Portland, it’s a new game.
After numerous stops at a variety of pet stores, I was referred to Bird Hut & despite the long haul out there, they have what we needed & the bird likes. Note to other shops selling parrot food:
Amazons shouldn’t have sunflower seeds. If offered a mix, they will only eat the sunflower seeds & they get especially nasty (or nastier than usual). Claudia, at Your Basic Bird in Berkeley, explained why they shouldn’t eat this & how it negatively affects their digestion & elimination systems… perhaps too much information, but, the point is, have some variety if you’re going to sell the stuff, or don’t offer it at all, please.
Back to Bird Hut… it’s weird. It looks like a bad tract house in the suburbs & gave me the creeps the first time… like the place is a cover for something else (like what, I don’t know). Once inside, the place is set up like a tract house: bigger birds in what looks like a living room, smaller birds in what could be back bedrooms… you get the idea. The salesperson was not especially warm or welcoming, but she got the job done. Because they had what I was searching for & due to the humorous nature of some of the resident birds (like the one positioned near the front door who yells,
«Fire! Let me out! Arriba! Arriba!!»,
I’m giving 4 stars. I think there’s too many birds in there, & who knows how they are procured, or where from? The place has been in business for 30 years, so it seems as tho’ that counts for something. Meanwhile, Papageno is eating away, swearing up a storm, & continuing to glower at me. Dysfunctional relationship aside, I don’t want anything to happen to this bird. Call me co-​dependent, but if it’s this hard to find chow in this town for a parrot, I am not taking any chances on trying to find a vet who specializes in ‘exotics’…
