The staff was amazingly nice. The theater itself was amazingly low-​key and small. Not too small, but small. The lighting and rigging was amateur… as I thought a light would fall and hit me the whole time. We saw «Porn Shop!!!» — which was REALLY bad. But I’d come back to see another play i guess. They take cash only… so we had to run down the street to the 7 – 11. And yeah, it’s called «Back Door Theater» because it’s literally in the back of a coffeeshop, with the entrance on a side ally… kind of weird, but oh well. Once inside, the stage area itself just seems to be a converted garage… but again, the staff was excellent.

The Backdoor Theatre is located, as it sounds, in the backdoor to a coffee shop on Hawthorne. And of course, it’s tiny, with bench seating and fold out chairs. But somehow it manages to have some of the best theatre in Portland. Shows have minimal props and focus largely on the acting and the script.
It’s refreshing to see a bare bones play that hits you just right, and it puts some of the larger theatre companies in town, with light tricks and major props and scenes, to shame.
