Bonsai is a great place to go with kids. The sushi is great and the appetizers are amazing. I have been going to bonsai for years, and it is my favorite Japanese restaurant. They use quality meat, and have fast, and friendly waiters. I would totally recommend bonsai to anyone craving Japanese food!

Great restaurant – great food, I highly recommend. The chicken terriyaki bento box is my personal favorite. Good for takeout too! I would just avoid coming here on a busy weekend night.

Where do i even begin. My boyfriend and I went for a lunch special. We have never tried this sushi place before. It was fantastic. First of all the décor was great. Fun fish tank. Fairly simple. Good feel. Very clean and good seating arrangements. The seating hostess was the nicest seating hostess I’ve ever seen. We each had a lunch special of three maki rolls. The lunch special for $ 12.95 included soup, salad, a choice of gyoza or shumai, plus ice cream for each of us! That was the best value i’ve ever heard of. Everything was quality and fresh. The gyoza were excellent and such a great bonus. The sushi itself was good and higher quality. Still not my favorite sushi place in the area but still great :) My boyfriend had spicy salmon with avocado and a tempura shrimp roll. The spicy salmon was great but the shrimp tempura was excellent. Such good flavor. I had spicy salmon roll, kani tempura roll and salmon avocado. All were so good. For lunch, this is the best value you can find. You get so much delicious, quality and fresh food. Not one thing was bad. I can’t wait to go back. I’ve tried so many sushi places in the area and Bonsai blew them all out of the water. Go you Bonsai

Came here for dinner last night on the way back from the hamptons and was pleasantly surprised. The service was quick, our waitress was new but none of our orders were messed up Food — regular and garlic edamame for the table. Should have gotten 2 garlics, that stuff was like crack. They do chunks of garlic with oil and it’s deeeeelish — golden toro roll– my boyfriend was intrigued by the gold flakes and truffle soy sauce but in the end it fell flat. The mango was a nice touch but there were too many other flavors that you couldn’t just enjoy the toro — snow crab roll: the snow crab salad on top was a little bit dry, I would have preferred a Kani salad on top. The salmon inside was good though — port Washington roll: really good overall but there was some sort of chewy squash on the inside that I couldn’t decide if I liked — crispy rice spicy tuna: my favorite roll. The rice was crispy on the outside, moist and sticky on the inside. They give you a good amount of tuna with it Price was $ 75 per couple and we ordered 4 specialty rolls so not bad

Less fancy-fancy, more traditional Port Washington Japanese serving usual sushi rolls, a la carte sushi, teriyaki and tempura fare. Sushi rolls were ok but the tuna don was seriously tiny and barely filling. The rice wasn’t vinegared enough so it was a bit bland too. Service is really fast so you may feel a but rushed in and out. Prices are also not on par with the small portions. Too bad because it’s very nice on the inside.

My boyfriend and I were really pleased with our entire experience here. We immediately received a warm welcome from the staff upon arrival and were seated in a private Japanese-style booth that I had requested. There were multiple waitresses tending to us, all of whom were very kind and attentive throughout the meal. We started off with steamed dumplings which were pretty standard to what we’ve had at other Japanese restaurants. The tuna tataki salad was fresh but a little bland. We ordered a few specialty rolls which were all tasty and generously stuffed with fresh ingredients. Our favorite was the 2013 Bonsai roll. This is one of the few places that I’ve been to on the island that has a peanut avocado roll, which my boyfriend loves. We ended the meal with our usual fried ice cream. Prices are very fair, given the area and food quality. I was surprised at how inexpensive the fusion rolls were($ 10-$ 16). Overall Bonsai is a nice local restaurant with a great staff, good food, and a nice atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back and maybe even order takeout one day as they have a promotion for $ 7 or 15% off online orders.

The sushi they serve is always delicious, although their prices have gone up all around. Meat portions(chicken and steak) have gone down tremendously. ALSO tried out their new drink menu last night… Ordered a Piña colada because they were out of the daiquiri mix and I DONOT recommend. The drink, which is supposed to be frozen, was a combination of sugary store bought mix, alcohol, and ICECUBES. Not appealing at all. Will stick to beer

Bonsai is one of my favorite sushi places in the area. They have different combinations of rolls which makes it less boring than a traditional salmon or tuna roll. The prices are also very reasonable. My favorite rolls are the port washington and the unique roll. Always check out what specials they have. I always get the aji and live scallop if they have. The live uni is also pretty good if you’ve never seen uni in it’s shell.

Not very good at all. The sushi and specialty rolls are nothing special, and the service is even worse. However, the pricing was reasonable. The restaurant was also pretty outdated when I went but I heard they remodeled as of late. Overall, there are better places in Port Washington for quality Japanese food.

Not the best sushi restaurant I’ve ever been to, but a good, solid lunch special with a great price, gentle music great ambiance and a bunch of Japanese businessmen eating a couple of tables away from me paired with one of the most gracious waitresses I have ever had make me feel like I could be in Koyoto today on this cold snowy day in Port Washington.

This is probably one of the most admirable sushi restaurants I’ve been to date. When you take a step into the building, you are greeted by the sushi chefs in Japanese to your right. This is the only place that I have experienced this besides Ippudo. What really wowed me during my visit is the presentation and quality of food. Your sushi doesn’t come arrived plotted on a thin white rectangular plate angled diagonally but rather, it comes to your table sitting pretty on top of bamboo mats that they use to roll up the sushi and a bamboo leaf for some color. My dad’s sashimi regular was artfully crafted into a large porcelain bowl along with twigs and a bamboo box as a backdrop for the food. Service was fantastic as the waitresses were very attentive and always checked in on us if we needed anything. Definitely recommend coming here if you are looking for a quiet dinner with the family or a date night with someone special. The booth seats with cushions and red floorboards also give you some sense of privacy while you are there which totally boosts the ambiance too.

Great rolls and udon. I used to order bento box a lot which was mediocre. But one day I went there with my mom and ordered a special roll(forgot the name and it had some tuna and crunchiness) and udon and they were delicious. Not even overpriced and the portion was good enough for two of us to get full. Next time I come, I’d just order special rolls with udon or some other dish instead of getting a bento box and share with my friend. I’m not saying bento box is a bad option. It’s filling and pretty good. Overall, it’s satisfying at bonsai.

Sadly because Yamaguchi’s is closed temporarily the pickings for authentic Japanese food is scarce. This place is operated by chinese so obviously there is nothinng authentic about it. The food is decent enough. They did offer fresh uni the night we were there, and you really can’t mess that up, open the shell and voile, and it was very fresh and delicious. Some of their rolls are inventive but still lacks a little something. Not bad for in a pinch but cannot wait for Yamaguchi’s to open shop again.

I have been here so many times, but this was my first time since it is under new ownership. They did some new internal decoration that I really like– looks much«cooler» for lack of a better word(nice lighting, cool touches to the sushi bar, etc.) and new is always nice. My Dad loves their green salad w/ginger dressing, nothing has changed there. The sushi did seem fresher and better though. We tried the Bonsai 2013 roll(coconut shrimp and some veggies inside(the usual– cucumber/avocado) and then baked scallop and crap on top with a wasabi and mango sauce. It was $ 13, but I enjoyed this a lot and it was very filling. Everything in it was always cooked, so for those that stay away from raw fish, this is nice to try something different. Also had a cucumer/avocado roll(only $ 3.50) and it was very delicious. We also got two shrimp tempura rolls($ 6 each) and you can decide if you want cucumber or avocado inside .We finished with fried ice cream– I still think Bonsai makes THEBEST fried ice cream of all time. I will be back!
