An excellent serious art gallery. The owners make great use of the modest space, and at any given time generally feature two or three of the collection of artists they choose to represent. The lighting and display is excellent, and the work is always professional quality. The media and styles are diverse, but the art always has that something extra: humor, a different point of view, an unexpected angle that creates work to be enjoyed for the long term. Don’t miss visiting Simon Mace(the Gallery and the dog :-) if you enjoy art.

«The Critters Are Coming» is the Simon Mace Gallery’s current exhibit. It highlights the art of Jaime Ellsworth, Susan Melrath, Cheri O’Brien and Thomas Rude. The exhibit runs from February through April, 2013 and features art about dogs. … «frolicking images of furry friends» is the way the postcard reads. «A portion of the artwork purchased goes to local programs benefitting animal welfare.» Not a surprise… You see, Simon Mace is a dog. Yep, his *people”*thought it fit to name the gallery after their own furry family. And so they did. Last year, shortly after the gallery opened, I was passing by. Saw a small chihuahua in a large kennel with a note taped to the outside…“Lost dog. Scared. Don’t try to pet as he might nip.“ Naturally, I was curious. Wandered into the gallery. Found out that the little guy had jumped from a truck parked on Water Street. And that upon being corralled, he was taken to Simon Mace Gallery to await reunification with his owner, who was probably shopping nearby.(A note had been placed on the truck telling the driver where to find his wayward dog.) Of course, this being Dream City, the ending to the story was happy… dog and shopper were reunited. One would expect nothing less in fairytale town like Port Townsend. Where art galleries bear the names of beloved dogs. And feature beautiful art. Moving forward to the present… Saturday I went to the Mace Gallery exhibit. Loved the place, loved the art. Pondered about how to come up with a spare chunk-a-change to buy a dog-themed piece or two. Decided that the prices were slightly beyond my humble means… though each and every piece should sell based upon its artistic merit. But, of course, I don’t have a coupla thousand bucks to kick in right at the moment… would you settle for a lick and a promise? Still. its worth a gander… and maybe, just maybe that movie script I’ve been working on will sell… «Smiley and The Lost Carbs: A Spaghetti Caper» may be the next box office sensation. You never know… Hang in there, Simon Mace. I may be back… with enough greenies to make everyone happy… PS…Perhaps F.F. Coppola would be interested in film rights…“Spaghetti” pairs well with vino, and you know about Coppola’s current venture.
