We got there around 12:30 and there were just a few people waiting for their orders. The first thing we noticed about the truck was that there was no list of the items that they offer. Instead they have pictures. A picture of a hamburger with hamburguesa above it, a picture of a hot dog with hot dog above it. Same for a taco, a torta, etc. But no prices anywhere! So … they tell you what you already know. «Look, there’s a picture of a taco with the word taco above it.» But they don’t tell you what you would like to know. «How much do you think that taco in the picture costs?» Weird. Then we notice that there are no pickled veggies/escabeche(jalapeño, carrots, onions). Nor any containers of radishes or chopped cilantro or chopped onion. I’m not talking about restaurants. Good taco trucks have that, or serve them on the plates. There are however some bottles of hot sauce. You’ve seen them before … where the hot sauce has dribbled down the side and dried on the side of the bottle. OK, it’s a low budget taco truck. My dining companion orders an al pastor taco and an asado taco with no salsa. When it’s ready, it’s clear that they both have salsa on them. Back they go. Separate order, I order a carnitas taco and a pollo asado taco with everything. When it’s ready it’s clear that there is no pollo. It’s lengua instead. I didn’t bother to send it back. The lengua tasted peculiar. Usually lengua is somewhat bland(that’s not a complaint, that’s what tongue is like) and the things that go on it(salsa, cilantro, chopped onion) make the dish. But this tasted like _corned_tongue. I’m not kidding. Perhaps it’s San Patricio’s Day. Some places that do not have escabeche on the outside of the truck put it on the individual plates, but not here. No escabeche, man. There are a couple slices of raw onion instead. Not much effort there. The sign on the truck does say La Cocina Antojitos Mexicanos, but it also says Nelly’s Kitchen. At 12:50 we were eating our tacos in the car and there was no one at the truck. Everyone else had left by then.

Food is pricey but is good. Basically the only taco truck in the area so they own the market around here… Wish they were open later but leave early between 2 – 3 and not here Sunday. Regular Burrito is $ 7

I moved to the Bay Area from Texas a couple years ago, and I have not been particularly impressed with any of the Mexican food here, even in the Mission. The Mexican cuisine I’ve sampled here has ranged from absolutely abhorrent to almost tolerable, so I was totally not prepared for the awesomeness that is La Cocina Taco Truck. My girlfriend and two of our friends had been wine tasting at Ruby Hill and Fenestra, and we were really hungry, so we decided to check out the nondescript taco truck parked near to Ruby Hill. I ordered the carne asada burrito and my girlfriend opted for two carnitas tacos. The prices are really reasonable at La Cocina($ 18 for two burritos and four tacos), and our food was served to us in under five minutes. The first thing that I noticed about the burrito was that it had been grilled for a little bit, so that the tortilla was warm and crisp. The first bite was amazing. Finally some Mexican food with a little bit of spice in it! The cilantro and peppers in the burrito definitely elevated the taste of the beans and meat. La Cocina makes quality tacos and burritos, and I really wish they would drive up to Berkeley some time. Cal needs a taco truck like this.

Stopped during my bike ride today for two carne asada soft tacos. They were spot on cantina perfect traditional tacos. Great place and super convenient cross road to cycle by. One minor gripe: No beer. Just kindding. Sort of. :)

Had them parked outside my wedding for our guests to snack on before they go home. I was happy with their service and I thought their tacos were delicious! I wish I ate more =)

Updating and very sad about it. The last few weeks the truck hasn’t been keeping a regular schedule, but even worse was they were there today and simply told my hubby«no» when he asked for our usual off-menu Chilaquiles. He even reminded them(it was the same guy and gal working there that he’s purchased from before) that they’ve made them for us before and all the guy would say is «no». So we drove downtown to Los Corporales which has delicious(on menu) Chilaquiles.

I had a couple of ‘azado’ tacos and one carnitas taco. As good as any taco cart I’ve tried from Richmond to San Jose. A rarity given its location, and I’m very, very happy they are there. I’ll be back, a lot.

It started out as a joke — «If you’re too hungry to hold out for lunch until after another winery, get a taco at that incongruous taco truck parked outside the winery!» However, once the first person ordered a taco, everyone else in our group followed suit. Can’t speak for anyone else, but this was my first taco truck experience, and it was a winner. The soft taco($ 1.50) was generously sized, delicious, and not overly messy. A wide variety of meats for tacos were available as well as sopes, pre-made burritos, and other food options. Lots of canned and bottled drinks were available on ice, too. All of us agreed the food was delicious, and the roasted jalapeño that accompanied the 2-taco order was reportedly tasty.(Note: Per the sign on the truck door, they’re based out of Johnson’s Catering Supply( ).) When we saw that the truck was still there after our second winery, there was serious debate about skipping the lunch restaurant we’d planned and simply hitting the truck again. Hard! TRIVIA: Lengua(beef tongue) is a widely available meat for tacos and burritos. Its consumption goes back to the Paleolithic era, partly because roughly 75% of its calories come from fat.
