This place has me feelin’ like a food critic! Since moving from California two years ago, we’ve been hard pressed to find decent Chinese food in Plano. Our favorite for take out is the Tasty Egg Roll, but haven’t located a nice restaurant to dine in… Until today! First of all, the service is awesome. I was greeted and promptly seated by a nice gentleman with a smile, who asked if my seat was ok, handed me the lunch menu and put my napkin over my lap. Since when do people do that anymore? I ordered hot and sour soup to start, which came super hot and in a cute little pot with a side of fried wontons. Within about 3 minutes, my lunch of Kung Pow Chicken arrived steaming hot. It was a pretty presentation and really good! The dish had plenty of fresh veggies and was cooked perfectly. The restaurant is clean, uncluttered, and updated. They have soft piano lounge music and the even water tastes good, which has become rare around here! All this upscale experience only set me back $ 10 + tip! Check this place out.

We have been coming here once a week for about 2 months already and decided it’s about time for a review. Here are the reasons we keep coming back: the meals are consistently good flavor and quality, the service is always good, and the atmosphere is cozy. I look forward to getting my usual hot jasmine tea, cup of hot and sour soup and any one of their yummy fish or chicken entrees. This week, I had the Yu Xiang chicken, just the right spicy level without killing your taste buds. My husband and I also enjoy their steamed dumplings but each time we order those we get so full that we end up taking our meals to go, which is great because then it’s one less meal I have to cook! My girlfriend and I like catching up here for lunch, the servers are respectful of your conversation yet remain attentive. Are there other places that may offer more authentic dishes or variety, yes but I’m giving this place 5 stars for the experience I know I can always rely on, and for my palate, expectations and price– Mah Jong is top notch!

We’ve dined at Mah Jong 3 times over the past 2 months, and each meal was really good! Soups(hot & sour, egg drop and wonton) were spot on! Egg rolls, noodle dishes, chicken and beef dishes… all perfect. Happy to have this restaurant at Lakeside! Excellent Chinese food!

I went here with a friend expecting something like Panda Express, but instead we got a cute sit-down restaurant that felt very up-scale. We stuck with a small budget and got appetizers, and they were delicious! I had the lettuce wraps, which were fantastic: crispy lettuce, great filling, flavorful sauce I could allocate as much as I wanted per wrap. Even as an appetizer, the portion was enough to act as a light entre. Décor is unusual, with a birdcage light fixture. Most of the people there on a weeknight were in small groups of 2 to 4, and everyone except us was dressed in business casual.

Very happy to have found this restaurant! Pan fried dumplings were delicious, the wonton was thin and cooked perfectly. Also had wonton soup which had two dumplings and was very good, just needed a little more salt. My husband had the hot and sour soup and liked it very much. We decided to go for a special off the menu to share and wow! Veal osso buco asian style! YUM! So good! We will be going back soon for more!

Perfect small place to have a date night or gathering wth friends or family. The food delicious and although it was on the prices side, it was worth the taste. The waitstaff were polite and amiable– will be returning!

Trying a new Chinese place is a real roll of the dice. Sometimes you get lucky, and such is the case with Mah Jong. Great lunch deals and much better food than most Chinese places in this price range. Service is attentive and friendly and the atmosphere is upscale. Try it. You won’t regret it.

Decided to give this place a try and you know what they say about first impressions… We arrived and were seated promptly at one of the outdoor tables but waited nearly 15 minutes for a server to even acknowledge us. Not off to a good start. I could tell this was an indication of how things would be so when she finally did come over, we ordered our drinks as well as all food items at the same time. Once our server brought our drinks, she never came to our table again except to pick up our empty plates once we had finished our meal(appetizers and entrees were brought over by someone else). We were never offered drink refills, and in fact sat with empty glasses for half the meal. The food was mediocre at best — it lacked flavor and the presentation was very average. I had to finally go inside and ask the hostess for our check because we were tired of waiting and just wanted to leave at this point. In defense of our server, they appeared to be understaffed as she was the only one covering all the outdoor tables. I expressed my concerns with the hostess(who may also be the owner) and she apologized while admitting they were shorthanded as two servers had no-showed for their shift. I understand these things happen and I sympathize with our server as it is not her fault. However, them being shorthanded on a Saturday night is not my problem as a paying customer. I see they have some very positive reviews on here so perhaps I was just unlucky and picked the wrong night to go. But even if I overlook the poor service, the food just wasn’t good enough for me to want to give them a second chance. Bottom line — there was nothing about the experience that makes me want to return to this restaurant. You only get one chance to make a first impression Mah-Jong, and unfortunately with this being my first time, the negative experience is all I have to judge you on. Thankfully I had a «Best of Guide» coupon for 50% off the entrees because I would have been even more disappointed if I had paid full price.

Was glad to see a new Chinese restaurant in Plano. Nice décor, small interior with friendly staff. Menu looked like they tried to elevate some standard Chinese fare. Prices are high, but with accents like black truffle we were hoping the food delivered. Unfortunately the food was just average. Not compared to real Chinese, but just average for DFW. Soup dumpling(xiao long bao) were too thick with little soup and bland pork. Entrees were the same as any Chinese take out. There’s better elevated Chinese just up the street so we won’t be back.

Food — 4 Service — 4.5 Value — 3 This restaurant caters to «Westerners» based on the items on the menu and prices and service. The food was pretty good though(way better than PF Chang’s). I was mildly disappointed that the online menu was out of date as I was looking forward to trying their Pee Par Tofu dish. The dishes we did get were pretty good, but a little expensive for the portions. We started off with the Xiao Long Bao(probably the best in the DFW area now — quite juicy and tender) and the Pork Belly Gua Bao(this was good, but we’ve had better in the DFW area for cheaper and larger portions). For our main dishes we got the San Bei Chicken Clay Pot, Orange Beef and Mushroom Trio Clay Pot — the only dish we’d order again is the Mushroom Trio. However, the chicken was very tasty and tender and we thought the dish was pretty good. The Orange Beef was not as good as I had hoped it would be. The next time we go, we may try the Chef’s recommendations instead(probably the Beijing duck and Seared Scallops).

Found my new favorite Chinese restaurant in Plano. The atmosphere is warm, the people are super friendly, and the food is executed at a level on par with Seattle, San Francisco, LA and Toronto. If you’ve experienced top notch Chinese Cuisine in any of those cities, you understand. First, the Hong King style Won Ton soup was delicate and balanced. The Shumai was tender and delicious. The Crispy Duck Breast was exquisite and did not need the pancakes. It was perfect on its own. The winner of the evening with was the Har Gow. The simple addition of black truffles on top sent this dish into the stratosphere. Can’t wait to try more!

Great food, service, and atmosphere. The portions were a good size, and the price is appropriate for the quality of food and location. Will go back for sure!

Surprising place! I was expecting a run-of-the-mill chinese restaurant and was instead treated to a nouveau dining experience. The atmosphere is New York chic yet very comfortable, with a lovely patio for outdoor dining. The service was very attentive; everyone from the manager down were eager to please and ensure we enjoyed ourselves. They are still in their soft opening phase, and the kitchen needs to work on getting the orders out faster, but we were not disappointed once the food arrived. …and truthfully, it didn’t take all that long; it was just slower than what we’ve grown accustomed to in this age of go, go, go… We ordered the pan-seared dumplings and salt and pepper shrimp as appetizers; both were excellent. The shrimp was extremely fresh and flavorful, as were the dumplings. For an entrée, we had the Peking style duck; WHATANUNEXPECTEDTREAT!!! Beautiful presentation and an explosion of flavors in my mouth! Absolutely superb!!! So fresh. As with most haute cuisine restaurants, Mah-Jong does not serve the massive amounts of food typically found at a Chinese restaurant. The portions are ample enough and satisfying for a meal; I left feeling content and not overstuffed. If you want to gorge yourself, I would suggest sticking to a buffet style restaurant; this establishment is about enjoying the experience of dining, the tastes and textures of the food, and the company you are with. Bön Apetit!

We came here for a Saturday night date and we’re not disappointed! The atmosphere is modern fresh and romantic. The service is attentive and we enjoyed meeting the manager Anson. We had several things including the dumplings, tofu and cole slaw for appetizers. All were delicious — we asked for sauces to go with the tofu and that made it even better. I think they should have sauces available throughout the meal We shared the filet merlot w Bok Choy. The meat was so tender! They have beer, wine and hot saki here. We are so glad to have this new gem in our neighborhood.

The menu here is a modern take on Chinese cuisine, which I’m not exactly sure how I feel. My brother and I came and ordered a lot of things, and yet somehow left feeling a bit hungry still. For apps we ordered the truffle tofu, xiao long bao(soup dumplings) and the pork bun. The portions were almost like dim sum size, ranging around 7 bucks and adding up fairly quickly. My lunch entrée of twice cooked pork was also a modest portion for the price, with most of the meal consisting of cabbage. Everything we tasted was great and you could definitely tell it was fresh, but something seemed to be missing. The xiao long bao didn’t have that classic soup spoon as a way to break open the soup dumpling. Nor was there any vinegar or ginger to eat with it. Instead, you just popped the 4 tiny dumplings in your mouth and hope you didn’t just burn your mouth. If you wait for them to cool off then you lose the hot soup experience and you’ll just eat congealed soup leftover. The pork bun was good, but the pork belly was slightly dry. The biggest complaint was that our three apps didn’t come until after we were half way into our meals. In fact, the xiao long bao didn’t come out until the very end. Also, my entrée came with an egg roll that also came out when I was nearing the end of my meal. The service was great but I’m not sure if I would try it out for dinner because I really miss the family style setting. But I absolutely love Royal China off of Preston, another modern take on Chinese so I might give it a chance. P. S. The truffle tofu was indeed interesting and was the best app for me. The only time I’ve had truffle oil were on fries, so biting into extremely soft, fried tofu is a lot like drinking canned water, freaks you out a bit even though it’s awesome. It needs some kind of spicy dipping sauce, I felt.

Beautiful dining room with conscientious service. The food is fantastic if maybe a bit salty(the sauces) My favorite was the steamed dumplings and the clay pots are perfection — especially the mushrooms. We went on a soft opening and it was lovely. I think it will get even better!
