The so called fresh foods here is a joke. Bought some Indian sweets and it had mould on it. Complaining to the health department. Please be wary of any fresh foods here. They are left in the open all day.

This is a charming little Indian grocery store in the North Hills. I do mean little — it’s just a single, smallish room in a small strip mall, but it is PACKED with goodies. They’ve got their own bakery display of homemade treats(samosas, gulab jamun, etc.), and the prices are all very good. But mostly, I love the staff here. I’ve come in a handful of times asking for advice on doing my own Indian cooking at home, and the woman(who I assume is one of the owners) has been SO helpful, walking me through ingredients, techniques, and recommendations. Yesterday, I stopped in to pick up a bottle of the tamarind chutney I use, and they didn’t have any in stock, so they helped me find a few other, very similar varities to try, and explained the differences in the flavors. They do accept credit cards, but there’s a $ 5 minimum, and if you’re just popping in for a single item, it probably won’t be enough. But don’t worry, you can always add on some freshly-made samosas to get you up to the minimum, and you’ll thank yourself for it later!

Very convenient location for North Hills, Aleppo Township and Sewickley residents. They have samosas and Indian sweets which are great for special occasions. Frozen paranthas, rotis and other breads are convenient. Great selection of Indian chai teas and the North Indian music that plays when you shop is a pleasant experience. Make sure to check expiration dates especially on canned and frozen items. I recently bought some paneer and many of the packets had exceeded their expiration dates by 5 months. I didn’t notice any other items that had past their expiration dates though. Overall, a great little shop to get ingredients for any great Indian meal!

Finding amchoor powder isn’t the easiest thing to do in the North Hills but it’s clear that India Market is the place to go. They have it all, and more — homemade Samosa, homemade Galoob Jamun, homemade Jalebis, you get the point… Even better that the dessers is the man that works at India Market. He had me taste all his homemade treats and made me chai. Even in 95 degree heat, chai tea is delish. The store moved from the old location on three degree road because it was held up and the poor guy was shot. Needless to say, I stayed to finish my tea and listen to his story. I also ended up buying a lot more that I initially expected, but mostly because the man was so sweet, and I’m a sucker. This is the closest place to head to when you need your indian spices — do it!
