Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

This hospital is spotless clean which is great. It is so HUGE that I could barely find my way around, but there are signs to help direct. Just ask someone that works there and they will tell you exactly where to go. The staff is friendly and professional. The doctors are great and really know what they are talking about.

This hospital is really nice and clean. We had our first appointment down there this week. The tablets they have for the children is a fantastic wait especially in times where there is a long wait. Thankfully we didn’t have a long wait in the waiting room. We did in the room in the GI department though. The staff was pretty friendly for the most part.

What can I really say about children’s? They work miracles, the place speaks for itself really! My daughter was transferred to their nicu from west penn 3 days ago and as soon as I walked through the doors I had a sense of relief. The doctor came out immediately after getting her settled into her room to update my boyfriend and myself on his plan of action and spoke to us in a way that two emotional sleep deprived parents would understand at 4am which was a nice change of pace from all the medical terms and numbers that had been thrown at us in other hospitals in the days leading up to that. They have private rooms for the baby’s like Gracie that need a little bit more relaxation and help, and she has one nurse that is assigned just to her so we know that the care that she is receiving is consistent. I also love the fact that not only do they focus on the patients but the parents as well. Since I’m breastfeeding they provide me with free meal vouchers for all of my meals, they have a lounge for the times that you need to get away and regroup with a electronics charging station, kitchen, showers, and even washers and dryers. There’s fold out beds in the room so that you can spend the night, and also 3 restaurants right in the building. For the times that you do have to be away from your baby they have cameras that you can log in to and see what’s going on at certain points in the day, and you can call any time ²⁴⁄₇ and check up on your child’s status.
Having a sick baby is never fun but children’s has given me hope that she will be able to recover, we are so lucky to have such an amazing facility in our city!

I’m use to Care at Childrens Hospital of St Louis. I feel the hospital Staff of Pittsburgh needs to take a trip there for lessons in patients care. Things Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh need to work on.
1. ER organizations skills. Getting their children into ER In less than 3 hours.
2. Bed side mannerisms. That includes ouch-​less care I have a Downsydrome daughter they dug a huge IV needle into find a vein repeatedly. I feel they hurt my child needlessly when ouch less care is available it should be used.
3. They tried to separate my special needs child from me to speak with her alone. Was crazy. My child doesn’t understand a lot. They also asked us if we has food in our home. I seriously felt like I was being interrogated. They seemed more concerned about finding something wrong in our home than helping my child’s needs. I feel very disappointed and dissatisfied with care here. Reading the reviews here I believe Pittsburgh people have become accustom to poor care for their children.
4. The hospital was short staffed. Also while in waiting room. My daughter has Perthes so her walking is limited. She’s in a wheelchair most the time. She had to use the restroom. I was first told she needed to wait. Seriously. I told her she couldn’t wait. I was handed a cup and wipes told to have her pee in it in the bathroom in the waiting room. I asked for a hat to collect urine because it was impossible with my daughters situations for her to pee in a cup. She said she couldn’t do that. We’d have to wait again. I took my daughter to the restroom so she wouldn’t hurt anymore. NO COMPASSION HERE
I wouldn’t have come In to the ER to bother or inconvenience these people if I didn’t feel their was something wrong with My CHILD.
5. When the Doctors and staff changed shifts. We weren’t told anything new people just showed up. New Dr seems nice but a heads up would have been nice. Respectful even. I know this is just their job. But this is my child.
I feel Whoever is running this hospital need to take a trip. See how other Children’s hospitals are ran. At Childrens hospital In St. Louis I felt we were treated more like people. I could feel they cared.
In Pittsburgh Children Hospital. I felt like Cattle.
I love my Children. They are not adults. My daughter kept telling me how scared she was. I’m seriously upset about this… She was terrified… That makes me angry as a parent.
If things change. I will gladly recant my statement but I stand by this experience. Very Disappointed and dissatisfied…

Refused my child care bc I have bcbs insurance coverage. He has broken elbow and I couldn’t get an appt even with help of orthopedic referral. Schedulers rude and uneducated. We went to West Penn pediatric MDs and received an appt for end of day. My son has a bad break and received the cast he urgently needed.

I am biased. My son received Life saving surgery here. Incredible hospital. Top notch staff (the friendliest I have experienced). I would give them 6 stars if i could. Not to mention the play areas for children, whether patients, siblings, or visitors. Even the food is good. Only complaint is the parking, but that is City of Pittsburgh, not UPMC.

Absolutely an amzimg hospital. Really fun for children when your in there are different colors. A childrens play room. Each exam room is a different theme to keep the child distracted and stimulated. Every nurse, doctor, anastesthiolgist admissions staff the people who were with our son when he woke up and discharged him, were awesome super friendly and knowledgable, nice made you feel comfortable and did a great job with our son. I reccomend this hospital. Thank you to all the staff.

I’m biased — I work here. Great hospital that offers wonderful service to the children and families of Pittsburgh. Again, I am biased, but I have always felt that the nurses and administration of this hospital have kept the children (patients) in the forefront, and have never forgotten their mission — to provide superior care to those children who need it. I am proud of this place, and hope that it will be my «work home» for the entirety of my career.

Best hospital in town. They have helped my kid through her asthma many times. I’m glad we have one in Pittsburgh.

I burst into the Children’s Hospital ER with my daughter in my arms. Her breathing was labored. She was just over a year old. I was a new mom, and I was terrified. Just three days earlier, her doctor had assured me this was just a cold– she’d be fine, he said. But when I checked on her and her breathing was shallow, I knew that wasn’t the case.
Enter Children’s Hospital. I was frantic. I was terrified. They were wonderful– the staff was reassuring, they helped me as much as they could, ran a few tests, and found that she had pneumonia. Two days later, I was taking home my all-​better little girl.
I have never had a good experience with a hospital– this one’s different. These people genuinely care about the kids. it’s more than a medical healing center– they quell your fears. They play and act silly to cheer the kids up. If you’re in the city and have a kid, this is where you want to go.

My daughter had a liver transplant here in September 2012. Everyone, from the surgeons to housekeeping, is wonderful.

If you have a child in Pittsburgh, Children’s is the place to go! They know what to do with children, and they have all the little tools and small sizes that fit your child. e.g., Just as children need car seats and boosters until adult seat belts are effective, they also need different medical devices.
One of my favorite things at Children’s is the walk-​in «Express» service. It’s open on evenings and weekends when your child’s ped is not available, and they staff it with area peds from the practices that feed the hospital. My ped actually does shifts there. They can handle all kinds of minor illnesses and injuries. One time my daughter came home from daycare with a scary rash all over her body, and Children’s Express Care was able to take care of it after hours. They can do x-​rays too. Plus, if they need to go to the Emergency Department, it’s right there!

Talk about a beautiful hospital inside and out. I was a frequent visitor to children’s when I was younger, which was before it was located in Lawrenceville. However, the other day I was lucky enough to visit this place in good health, and I was amazed by the beauty and the little additions and details that this place makes to make this place even more beautiful.

Holy amazeballs. If I were a sick kid, I’d almost be excited to come here. They have pretty much the best of everything here and have spared no expense. Everything’s clean and new. There’s even a Rita’s stand in the lobby. I’ll be working here for a few months, so I can’t really speak from a patient or parent perspective, but as a physician, I can say that it’s pretty awesome to work in a place with amazing resources.

We see Dr. Vockley for my son’s genetic disorder (VLCADD) in addition to our local geneticist. He’s great and the staff at Children’s have always been pleasant to work with. The facility is very large and I’ve had to ask for directions more than once, but it’s not overwhelming and, like I mentioned, the staff is friendly and will quickly direct you to where you need to go.

This facility is top notch. The staff is friendly and child sensitive at every turn. We have had two surgeries first thing in the morning and they talk softly, keep the lights off, and give you time while your child sleeps away. Their patience is very impressive and the results are incredible. The skills of the physicians are remarkable and my child is living proof. If you have a child that needs care you can be confident in your decision to take the to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

My fifteen year old daughter and I are still recovering from a nine hour ER visit to Children’s Hospital. While the actual treatment we received for the migraine headache was adequate, the six hour wait time in the outer waiting room and the one and a half hour wait time in the treatment room was agonizing! My daughters pain needs didn’t seem like an emergency to anyone in the ER. I couldn’t recommend using this facility to anyone unless they truly have a life-​death situation and they can arrive in an ambulance. When I asked them about the extremely long wait time they said, «it’s been like this since February.» Parents BEWARE!

I was an accident prone kid and spent a lot of time in Children’s ER for various broken bones and concussions… haha!
I haven’t seen the new hospital but I’ve heard it is gorgeous! The old hospital wasn’t bad either.
The care I received there was fantastic, the nurses, techs, clerks, and docs were excellent. :)

This is where I was first diagnosed. At age nine. The questions as to why I was going to the bathroom all the time. Why I was thirsty all the time. Why I was tired all the time. It was at my pediatrician’s at Children’s Hospital that I received the news that would change my life. At age nine, I was told I had type-​1 diabetes.
My nine-​year-​old mind blamed the doctors of course. I was fine up until that point, right! They must have put something in me to make me this way. From that moment forward, everything had to be regimented. My eating. My testing my blood sugar. I learned that I would have to have snacks when I was not hungry. I learned that several times a day, I would have to prick myself with needles, take insulin, etc.
But y’know what? In looking back, the care I received was wonderful! They taught me and my parents that it was not the end of the world. They showed me how it was nobody’s fault that this happened. They taught me how to take my insulin. I learned through stories and children’s books how to do this. Much was being learned about diabetes back then (1986) and I discovered that I could still have a lot of the same foods I always liked.
Let me say that Children’s guided me and my parents through all of this. No, diabetes is not the end of the world for a 9-​year old girl. But they taught me well that everything changes when you’re a diabetic. Thanks to them, while I admit that I am not always a good girl when it comes to eating, I am meticulous about my healthcare. I get my heart, teeth, kidneys, and feet checked on a regular basis. I’ve become more consciencious about the obesity problem in this country. And since I’ve long «graduated» to Magee Women’s Hospital, I still thank Children’s for what they’ve taught me.

I can only really review the orthopedics department at Children’s, which I have to give 5 stars for expertise, kindness, and cartoon animal covered hospital gowns. (Hi, Dr. Mendelssohn!)
Support staff at the hospital are great, and everyone from the parking valets on up are friendly, helpful, and courteous, especially to terrified little kids.
*There used to be an awesome snack cart right inside the hospital parking lot entrance where I’d get a delicious Boston Crème Donut on my way out. I can’t guarantee this is still there.
