This place is not a temple, but more like a gathering place for the members of the Tzu Chi group. Tzu Chi is relatively unknown here, but this Taiwan-based group is like the Buddhist version of Red Cross. They were there at the earthquake in Haiti, the South Asia tsunami, the Haiyan typhoon in the Philippines, the earthquake in Japan, the 9⁄11 attack… providing material assistance, financial support and emotional comfort to victims. They build schools, free clinics, hospitals and recycling centers all over the world, and even maintained a bone marrow database in Asia. The Miami group is relatively small, but over the years have expanded enough to this spacious headquarter. They have monthly gatherings to discuss sutra, pray, and do volunteer work such as Habitat for Humanity and visiting nursing home. They also have summer school for children. If you come by this place, there are books and magazines, in both English and Chinese, available for purchase or free distribution. At their gatherings, they serve vegetarian meals, as in Chinese Buddhism tradition, and the food, made by volunteers with love, is always delicious, and authentic! What impresses me is how friendly the people here are. They have genuine smiles, and really make you feel welcome and cared for. True manifestation of Bodhisattva.

CHINESENEWYEARFESTIVAL Tzu Chi Buddhist Temple food stall provided all sorts of vegetarian delights. We made a nominal donation to sample their vegetable pancake. It was indeed most enlightening.
