Aikido – Providence Aikikai

This is an excellent dojo. Small class size and enthusiastic students ensure a rigorous workout. Instructors’ technical competency and repertoire are also impressive. If you live in Providence or are staying here for a short period, this dojo is worth a trip.

This is a great dojo! Aikido is the only martial arts I’ve ever practiced. I started practicing aikido about twenty years ago and I’ve experienced a number of different dojos and instructors over that time in the various places I’ve lived.
The instructors here are awesome, both as practitioners of the art and as teachers. You can get a vigorous workout if that is what you are looking for or you can be helped gently along if you are just starting. The dojo space is clean and bright with good mats. The class times accommodate a variety of schedules. There is a great mix of men and women who practice, as well as beginners and advanced students. This is a safe place to practice aikido and to learn from instructors who have incredible credentials.

I had never practiced martial arts before deciding to make Aikido my martial art of choice. My selection criteria were: 1) stress-​busting, 2) how many years could I practice this art form and still be challenged mentally, 3) self-​defense and 4) a zen-​like feel to the practice. Providence Aikikai (sister dojo of Framingham Aikikai) is a great dojo that focus on the practice that O’Sensei and Kani Sensei taught and helping its members on their journeys from 6 to sixty plus. Male or Female, Aikido works equally well. Lastly, the Youth Program is great for kids and parents looking for an alternative to Taekwondo or Judo or Karate. I realize that martial arts are not for everyone, however, give this authentic martial art and dojo a serious consideration, you will not be disappointed.

I got into aikido to get myself off the couch and out of the house. I learned about aikido when i was younger but never got around to actually doing it, and can’t believe what an incredible opportunity I’ve come across. A real aikido dojo with instructors teaching aikido the way it was meant to be taught. One of our chief instructors learned directly from an aikido master instructor who was in turn taught directly by the the founder of aikido himself. An unbelievable lineage for the dojo and stroke of luck for myself! Classes are taught in a relaxed non competitive manner and every student is able to learn at his or her own pace and comfortably .
Aikido is a martial art that uses the momentum and energy of the attacker against them, through joint locks and throws and blending with the attack to gain the optimal position on ones attacker. Based off of samurai sword technique it is a true Japanese martial art or budo. Very cool!
Aikido has been a great place for me to get active! I have no former martial arts experience. At almost 40 and living with a severe nerve injury that affected my right leg literally from top to bottom, I’ve been able to get a great workout without any pain and at a pace that’s right for me. I quickly found out that adjusting the training to the experience and ability of ones partner is a key principal to a safe and fulfilling workout in aikido. For those looking for a good workout aikido can definitely fulfill that roll as well. I end every class drenched in sweat and definitely hitting my target heart rate something I myself desperately needed.
I’ve also meet some really great people and made some great new friends as a result of studying aikido. I really couldn’t have asked for much more!

I have been practicing for a month now, having a great time! I like it so much I’ve convinced my fiancé to join as well. Lots of fun, great workout and great people!
