Very sad to report this charming place has closed. But you can still shop… Read on. Sadly, Paul passed a few years ago. His wife Lynne worked closely with him and has continued the craft, but a year or so ago she sold the property when the cottage came into disrepair. She’s now selling online only at (no «s»), but if you’re visiting and wish to take something home she might be kind enough to have you peruse her workshop in Mountain View(but then be on time and go ready to purchase with items you’ve seen online. Oherwise you’re just disrupting her private life). Contact Lynne through her site.

We just love Hawaiian Artifacts! They have a really great selection of authentic Hawaiian items, hand made by locals. Their historically accurate ancient Hawaiian weapons are amazing! They are a regular supplier to the film industry. As for customer service, it’s wonderful. Friendly, knowledgeable and engaging, we could have stayed all afternoon to «talk story». We loved the welcome crew(their two dogs and kitty) that came out to greet us. Even though they are a little out of the way, they are one of the few local shops left. Great people, fair prices, and well worth the visit!

Yeah~I love jewelry made by artisans because when you buy a piece of jewelry from an artisan-the jewelry piece you purchased is one of a kind. My sister, Natalie always buys her jewelry here for the specific reason I mentioned.

on our way to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden we saw this cute store on the side of the street. We thought we would hit it on our way back. As we drove back, we pulled up and saw that it was closed but the owner saw us and went back in and opened up shop for us. Lucky for us! It had many great little artistic gifts made of wood, stone, pearls — at GREAT non-touristy prices. I picked up a Koa wood vase(though can only be used for fake flowers, no water) for $ 20 and bunch of pearl earrings for $ 6, necklace for $ 15 and wood box with inlay $ 15-$ 20. a GREAT find! and lovely shopkeeper. wrapped up all the gifts pretty for me. yay!

This is an art gallery of a different nature. They specialize in ancient Hawaiian ceremonial pieces, like swords, knives, hatchets, religious items, etc. They make all the items there and follow the original way of making the artifacts. All 100% hand made. They use the real beaks of swordfish, or the teeth of sharks. All the wood is hand carved. Nothing made in China here… all original. The best part of this place is that their prices are about half what you would pay in in the tourist traps, like the Hyatt Regency Hotels, etc. You get it directly from the people that make it… and can talk about Hawaiian customs and ceremonies too boot. This place is WAAAAAAAY out in the sticks north or Hilo. I ran across this place by accident… but I picked up a ceremonial sword made from a swordfish and a hatchet made from the teeth of sharks. Fabulous pieces and affordable… under $ 150 each. If you ever at Hilo and watching the volcanoes, you should drive on this side of the island and stop here just to see what they have. As you drive here you will drive through rain forests and see waterfalls off the the side of the mountain. Really gorgeous area, worth the trip even if you dont buy anything.
