The owner of Johannes sent me an apology and will give us a complimentary Schnitzel dinner. He also said the staff has been retrained to provide better customer service. We do look forward to dining there, and I will write a review after the meal. We’ve heard so many good things about the restaurant and are looking forward to dining there.

After three visits, I can say the food is exceptional. However, the service can miss. I really don’t like the method of seating you and letting you wait until the server brings the menu. I want to decide if I’m having wine with food, or a cocktail first. My only other complaint would be the lack of attention for a table of two when there’s a group in the room. It takes no time to say«how are things?» when you’re fawning over another table. Otherwise, a good place.

Two friends took me here as their guest. I hope they take me there again when I visit. Heck, I’ll ask to go there and pay myself, it was that good. Great service — attentive and quick and delicious food. I split a special appetizer which was four different types, seared duck breast slices, prosciutto wrapped around pear with greens and two others which were good, but I can’t remember now. :(For my entrée, I had the duck which was melt in your mouth good. Crispy skin on the outside and moist meat on the inside with a demiglace brown sauce served over a bed of polenta and mushrooms. The evening began with a perfectly made Manhattan. My friends reported their dishes were also delicious. Johannes is another reason to visit Palm Springs.

I made a reservation on Open Table, we were on time and the hostess brought us to a table in their windowless box of a back room. We had passed 3 empty tables in the front so I asked if we could sit there. The answer was No because people had made a direct reservation with the restaurant and requested those tables. I said, «are you saying not to reserve on Open Table And she said no but you’d need to note the table area or call direct and I said, How would I know to do that.»? We just left this was the third bad experience there. The other two being bad holiday meals that were very expensive. Went to Zin and had a great meal.

Had the Jäger Weiner Schnitzel, veal. It was my first authentic wiener schnitzel and it was definitely tasty, tender, and crispy to perfection. The sourdough bread and pea(I think?) spread offered was different and yummy. We tried several of the appetizers, including the cheese spaetzin(winner, winner!), raw brussel sprout salad(was not sauced, flavored, or oiled well; do not recommend), and seafood ceviche trio(mixed with a mayonnaise mix that was far too creamy). Was a good dining experience, complete with knowledgeable and attentive server. A solid 4 in my books.

Stopped by for dinner after long day at work and sat at the bar since didn’t have reservations. There are 6 seats at the bar and 2 more high chair tables with 2 seats considered bar seats. Important to know since you can order the classic schnitzel for $ 15 dollars and add $ 4 dollars for one of 3 sauce options. So started with one of the specials of 3 fried oysters for $ 18 dollars but was fried beautifully! It was seriously delicious! Then got corn soup with Dungeness crab for $ 16 dollars… crab was good, flavor was very good, just pricey for what you get. Main course had schnitzel with lemon caper sauce with one of the best tasting schnitzel ever! It was so soft and tender… no reason to get anything else here! Also got the half of a duck with super crispy skin and huge serving of duck meat… I just didn’t feel the flavor was anything special and the consistency of the meat was just so so as it was a little rough. The orange sauce was not to par in my opinion, but I could see people who would really like it as well, just not for me. Overall pricey place but the food is really tasty and well made! Would get schnitzel for sure!

Great food and service. We went for Xmas dinner and the menu was special for the evening. We both started with a potato leek soup that was scrumptious. For the entrée, I had seared scallops that were cooked to perfection. My husband had the roasted half duck which he loved. For desert I had a poached pear with an orange chocolate chipotle mousse. Incredible flavor combination! Jack had the bread pudding. Don’t let these descriptions fool you. All the dishes infused complexity with comfort– complex comfort food! Perfect for a foodie Xmas. Johannes could have gotten five stars but for the fact that the place is in dire need of a makeover. The prices are a bit high for the strip-mall ambiance, but the food and service will keep you focused on what’s most important.

Finally made it to this place on an anniversary weekend and it lived up to the hype! We had a really good date dinner here on a Friday evening. I am a huge fan of schnitzel and this place has the best I’ve had! My wife had the Salmon and said it was one of the best dishes she has had too. We started perfectly by sharing the chilled corn soup with crab. They have a great list of after dinner drinks too. The service was great, they knew exactly when we needed attention. You seriously can’t go wrong with this place, there is a reason it has been popular for so long.

Upperclass German restaurant. Weiner Schnitzel, which is just breaded veal, otherwise bare. A bit boring. Avoid seats in the bar, between two quieter dining areas. Their escargot are amazing – eight swimming in a sea of buttered bread crumb garlic material you usually only get on top of the escargot. I’ve never seen escargot like this elsewhere. They have broiled duck with orange sauce. Few restaurants offer this anymore. Crisp on the outside but subcutaneous fat. Roasted potato was undercooked. There may be other good stuff on the menu which I haven’t tried, but somehow(except for the escargot) it just isn’t great…

We found this little hidden gem by mistake and it was best thing ever, that we had dinner here twice while we here in town. Service is great and the food is amazing you must try.

This has been a top restaurant in Palm Springs for many years. The schnitzel is fantastic and the chef is a master from German to seared Ahi. Nice bar to sit at, interesting meal and cocktail specials. We always done here when in town. Highly recommend, make a reservation.

We like this place a lot, second time here, guess I am one of those peep that finds one thing they like in the menu and sticks to it, love the half roasted crispy duck!!! Lovely atmosphere, great patio seating watching the world walk by as you enjoy your lunch or dinner, good times, april and mat best time for the patio seating, so you can watch everyone walk by, great spot for people watching while sipping a few cocktails or their signature sangrias!!!

Really like coming here for the schnitzel. They do a decent job with it. I would say that it is good but not excellent. The schnitzel comes in several preparations. Take your pick but don’t expect to be blown away. Service is very good and the ambiance good too. Give it a try but keep your expectations down. The other items on the menu are good too. Haven’t had many of them but what I have had is okay. Overall I would say the food here is a bit pricey for what you get.

Hard to beat! We found this restaurant by chance and this is by far our best experience in Palm Springs. Food is pricey but you get to please your taste buds! This place is highly recommended for those looking for high quality food and wine in a quiet environment.

I’ll have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect when I came here. Granted, once I saw rack of lamb on the menu, I was pretty much sold. Our party of 5, had a very late dinner(9:30pm) because we didn’t want to have an early dinner of 5:30. Btw, you can make reso on the Unilocal app with Open Table =) Arrived to a very modern and sophisticated restaurant. Formal dress wasn’t needed but, we wanted to dress up a little for our last night on the town. Our host(who I felt was the owner) was very nice and seated us. Our waitress(I wish I remembered her name) was also very nice and informative on the menu. Couple of her recommendations of weiner schnitzel and dinner options were taken into account. Throughout the weekend, we all shared food so we could sampe a little bit of everything. So tonight wasn’t any different. I have to add that the portions here are VERY sizable! Rack of Lamb — my go to at any fancy schmancy restaurant and this wasn’t any different. Lamb was still red with lots of flavor with or without the sauce. Unfortunately, I was soooo full from the apps that I didn’t eat one of my pieces. Braised Veal — fall off the bone goodness. Such a large portion that we had to get more than half it to go. Chicken Lemon Caper Weiner Schnitzel — I’ve never had weiner schitzel(not of the fast food kind) til now and it didn’t disappoint. Thin pieces of chicken, breaded and fried. Sauce wasn’t overwhelming, as lemon caper shouldn’t be. With sides of pickled veggies and I think cranberry sauce. Roasted Duck — FAVORITEENTREEOFTHENIGHT! Shrimp Cocktail — more like shrimp ceviche versus shrimp cocktail. Malayan Meatballs — so good, we wanted to eat them with rice. We are Asian afterall. Escargot — butter, garlic, pesto… what’s not to love. We were a little taken a back that the snails weren’t in their shell but, good regardless. Ask for extra(fresh homemade) bread to sop up that EXTRA sauce!

With 297 reviews on this place already, not sure what I could possibly add that hasn’t already been said. We like this place a lot. On our visit, we were treated very kindly by the host and our waitress was super-friendly, knowledgeable, and warm-spirited. She had a terrible case of laryngitis that evening, which was certainly unfortunate as this is an extremely loud restaurant. Really too loud. Everyone at our table enjoyed their soup or salad starters. I would highly recommend their brussel sprout salad. They peel the sprouts by hand and toss it with feta, walnuts, lemon juice, and olive oil. Superb in its simplicity. Our table tried various schnitzels, all of which were very tasty, as well as the vegetable curry which also received rave reviews. I had a chicken schnitzel… tasted like a chicken breast that had been flattened, then breaded with flour, and fried. Plus, let’s face it: it’s just feels good to say«chicken schnitzel». We ordered several martinis in various flavors, all of which were well-prepared. Service was attentive throughout our meal. If you are planning to dine here, I would very strongly recommend reservations as this place gets pretty packed. Who knew there were so many schnitzel freaks in the desert? Nothing earth-shattering going on here, just tasty and backed up by nice portion sizes. Solid four stars.

Johannes Restaurant is an excellent, high-end restaurant in downtown Palm Springs. It’s unique in that it offers Austrian cuisine in a luxury-restaurant market dominated by French, Italian and American fare. The dishes here use quality ingredients, and service is pretty good(though could be a bit better, for a fancy restaurant). FOOD: To start, I ordered the Wild Mushroom Soup(with crème fraiche, chives, white alba truffle oil, $ 10). Besides being delicious, it was beautiful to look at(see attached picture). For some reason, mushroom soup is very popular around this time in Palm Springs. Next, I went for the Wiener Shnitzel, which is the most popular dish here. You can order it in chicken or veal, and I got it in chicken(I can’t bring myself to order veal anymore, anywhere, but the waitress said it tastes better). The wiener schnitzel came with roasted parslied potatoes, cranberries, lemon, and cucumber in dill sour cream dressing($ 24). All ingredients appeared high quality, and the combination of sweet cranberries and schnitzel made for a unique and tasty flavor profile. Johannes has a special schnitzel menu right now, so be sure to order off of that if you do go with schnitzel(which I recommend, seeing as you’re at an Austrian restaurant and this seems like their signature dish). Lastly, I topped dinner off with their desert sampler($ 12), which consisted of a mini crème brûlée, a mini bread pudding doused in chocolate, and 2 mini beignets drizzled in chocolate. All three were very tasty, with the bread pudding being the best. Overall, the mushroom soup was excellent, but could have used a little more texture(perhaps whole or half mushroom slices?), the schnitzel was fantastic(a very good fusion of sweet, semi-sweet, and salty ingredients), and the desert was great too. ATMOSPHERE: This is a quiet, dark restaurant with outdoor seating in a nice area of downtown. Lots of couples and businessmen come here to celebrate special occasions. The crowd is older, 40s-70s I would say. Décor is nice, but understated — nothing out of the ordinary for a nice restaurant. SERVICE: My waitress was a little slow at times, and I had to call to get her attention more than once. It’s a forgivable offense, but this is an expensive restaurant, so I hold it to a slightly higher standard. Otherwise, service was pleasant, and the hostess was very nice to talk with. OVERALL: I highly recommend Johannes for a special occasion, especially if you’re tired of high-end Italian, French, and steak restaurants, but still want a fancy place to celebrate.

10÷11÷14. Dinner Dinner was off a weird start at Johannes. We checked in at 6:30p sharp; hostess seated us at the high-top by the window to the immediate left of entrance. I was fine with the table despite the fact that the restaurant was almost empty. Then came the weird part. A late-50ish blond lady made a fuss about how I called and changed reservation time and so we got that high-top instead of a table in the dining room. I did not call to change but I didn’t say anything. I did not bother to put up with an argument because I’m in Palm Springs, my second home, to relax. And for your information, I *always* make out-of-town reservation well in advance on OpenTable if I can to avoid phone reservation. Anyway the highlight is our server who is also the bartender. I give her credits for both mollifying the weird tension earlier and making some of the best cosmopolitan($ 9) and Moscow Mule($ 9) we have. *Brussels Sprout Salad($ 12) is fresh and tasty with sprinkles of walnuts and cheese. Good starter. *8 oz Chopped Kobe Beef Jäger Style($ 19) tastes like Salisbury steak, nothing special. The beef is drenched in the red wine sauce. I do like the bacon bits and wild mushroom. The French fries are crispy and good. *Chicken Parmesan Schnitzel($ 26) as featured in their special 15th anniversary menu has two chicken patties finely breaded and fried. I love the texture and the even breading but the flavor is bland. I can’t taste the parmesan and the cranberry jelly compote in my opinion does not complement the schnitzel. Overall Johannes is a fine dining choice in Palm Springs, but I’m not in a hurry to be back. I’m not extremely impressed nor am I badly disappointed. It’s very mediocre for the high prices($ 55+ per person). Food/menu needs to be refined and more attention has to be paid on the flavor. All that said, I am highly impressed with our server/bartender.
