I recently started a new hobby that consists of putting paint on things. I am still not very good at it, but I am learning. Up until last week, I went to a hardware store and bought cheap spray paint. We had been into this store before and bought a Beebs and Her Money Makers CD(Yes, there are some people that still buy CDs) but never had a reason to shop here. We just like graffiti and liked looking around. It isn’t a huge store, but it is packed with some great graffiti art, spray cans, other supplies, and a friendly atmosphere. I went in to get some black and white paint. The idea was to cover stuff with either black or white paint and then use the newly covered stuff as blank canvasses.(Brilliant, I know!) We went in and felt a little intimidated. There was a real artist buying real supplies for a real art project. Immediately the girl that was working there put us at ease with a friendly smile and saying she would be right with us. She took really good care of the artist because he just spent a few hundred dollars on supplies and he was a regular. As soon as the real artist was done, the store keeper turned her attention on us. I vaguely explained what I needed and she started asking questions. And, these questions actually made me feel more comfortable rather than making me feel alienated. She knew what she was doing in the line of questions to help narrow down the supplies that would work best for the project. We also bought a piece of art because it had an owl on it and we have a daughter that freakin’ loves owl and graffiti so an graffiti owl is perfect for her. The shopkeeper explained the about who the artist was and why they created the piece. She then grabbed the supplies I needed. She asked if I had ever used any of these. I confessed I was using the hardware spray paint. She went through a quick explanation of how this product differed and some of the things I could expect. She provide valuable information without making me feel like a complete newbie ass. When we checked out, we didn’t get super VIP status treatment, but anyone who expects that during a small purchase on a first visit is just a pretentious ass. The service, however was incredibly friendly, fast, thorough, and way more than I deserved. Definitely enough for me to return without hesitation.
