Good food, I used to come here all of the time but stopped for a few months, returned a few weeks ago and noticed that they jacked up the prices. I think for some dishes it’s understandable, but the prices for the appetizers should not have been changed at all. Almost $ 3 for one spring roll is pretty ridiculous. I feel like the owners are falling on some hard times– closed on Mondays, raised prices… red flags that they are losing business. It’s kind of sad because they are hard workers and take pride in all of their restaurants.

The food was very good and the people who own the place are friendly. Only negative was the price was higher than standard.

I have to admit that the food at Shanghai Gourmet was decent Americanized Chinese food. The reason I only gave them one star is due to their horrible service. There is a large sign on the outside of their restaurant that says they offer a free glass a wine to patrons. We were told at 5:00PM they were out of wine. Three times we had to ask for water. Our dinner was served and we had to ask for utensils. They got my order wrong and you would think they would make my order right away, especially since I only ordered a large bowl of soup… no. I had to wait forever and everyone at my table was already done eating when the soup finally came. On top of that, no one apologized. Unacceptable. We will never go back to Shanghai Gourmet.

Shanghai Gourmet used to be our favorite asian restaurant. Lately they can’t make anything right. The last three times we visited things came out of the kitchen wrong. We have also ordered to go and came home to find entrees missing and the ones we got were burnt and not make correctly. it’s time to look for a go to for asian food.

The food here is excellent. The service and look of the place is pedestrian, but this is primarily a takeout place and has fresh, tasty Chinese and Tai food which is very refreshing for this area.

Consistently very good food; unpredictable to poor service. I’ve been a big fan of this restaurant for at least 4 – 5 years(since DSW opened in Orange one the Boston Post Road) primarily because the quality of the vegetables and food and the taste of the dishes is exceptionally good for a strip-mall Chinese eateries. Secondly the dining area is small and very tasteful decorated. In reading some of the other reviewers of this restaurant I see that my major criticism is supported. The service at best can be described as temperamental. Eating tonight at 6:30pm, the sole female server was rushed, abrupt, not friendly and not helpful. Having a second-grader as a customer did not seem to matter to this woman. It was easy to see that this one server for eight tables who is also answering the phone for take out orders, working the cash register for in-house and take-out orders, and busting tables – was obviously overwhelmed. Even these conditions do not justify being flagrantly rude to paying customers because someone in your restaurant will not make a minor decision to hire one more server. Over the years this was not the first time this same server was moody and unpleasant; it was just the worst. We agreed it was the last time to go there…

Went based on recommendation, food was decent but service was lacking. Our waitress perhaps owner was not friendly, we had to ask for water refills. I am big on service so I won’t be back.

expensive gross and greasy. just picked up dinner there $ 36.00 for the most greasy and awful Chinese food we have ever had in Connecticut. our tubs had orange colored grease dripping out of the containers, the lo mein was disgusting and the tiny bits of pork were tasteless. my god what a horrible restrauant for take out. not to mention how rude they are. warning to all future customers bring your wallets and lots of napkins to lap up the grease slim… eeeeewwww

Hidden away in a strip mall, this restaurant is a pleasant surprise. I loved the bronze-covered tables and wood chairs. We were served tea and crispy noodles by, whom I was told, was the owner. Service was good. Great Chinese food. I had the lunch special, eggplant and chicken in garlic sauce, brown rice and veggie hot and sour soup. The brown rice was hard. The eggplant more than made up for it. So good. The soup was also nice and spicy, but mild enough for anyone to like it. Good value as well.

by new haven(and around) standards, this is GREAT. cheaper than lao sze chuan and comparable in quality(although admittedly the diversity of options for chinese food is less) — but what they do have, they do well. i go here over lao sze chuan when i want the basics and i want it for cheaper(probably like 33% cheaper than LZC)

My favorite Chinese restaurant by far. Intimate setting, friendly staff and the food is excellent. If you’re a Chinese food fan and haven’t given them a try you are doing yourself a disservice. Eat in or take out, either way they are a winner.

Love it! Great food, great friendly service. Food is always consistently good. Definitely try the black bean sauce with chicken, or the string beans and garlic with chicken. Great wonton soup, too. Oh yeah: and a free glass of wine(okay quality).

I have been living in the west haven/orange area for about a 6 months now, and I’m relieved to say that thanks to my fellow Unilocalers, I’ve now found my go-to Chinese food spot. Ever since moving from New Haven, I have been striking out with Chinese restaurants in the area. I decided to expand my search out into the boston post road when I was in that area and hungry for takeout. The reviews for Shanghai Gourmet were stellar, and after trying their food, there’s no surprise why. I ordered the General tsaos with pork fried rice and boneless spare ribs. My food was prepared quickly and it was reassuring to know it would be fresh. Moreover, the staff could not have been friendlier. I even forgot my soda in the cooler on the way out and the woman at the register came running out to flag me down. The fried rice was some of the best I’ve had in a while. The general tsaos was juicy and tasted like real chicken, which is always a plus, and the ribs had a nice grilled char that you don’t see often(my preference). The egg rolls were phenomenal and the food coma was real. Shanghai Gourmet was a very nice find, and I owe it to the thorough and honest reviews of the previous Unilocalers. According to their menu, they deliver, so I’m looking forward to seeing if they’ll make the 10 minute drive to West Haven. That being said, if they didn’t deliver it would be worth the drive for takeout. Between the reasonable prices and the excellent quality of the food, Shanghai Gourmet has locked themselves in as my second favorite Chinese spot in the state.

Another hidden treasure found, partially due to fellow Unilocalers. Went for lunch recently with some co-workers and although I always knew this place existed, had just overlooked it, not knowing how great it was. It’s in a small strip mall on a busy stretch of the Post Road and definitely easy to miss. The place is very small, but tastefully decorated with lovely artwork, large wood tables and high back chairs. I believe the woman up front is the owner, along with her husband. We initially were the only group eating at 1pm on a Friday although other patrons came in later on. Lunch menu is reasonable… runs from $ 6.50 to $ 7.50 for a fresh, wonderfully tasting and large meal. Regular menu is a little pricier but well worth it. The wonton soup had homemade wontons(not those pre-made ones that are probably frozen), veggies were crisp and fresh and chicken was tender and flavorful. My dish had eggplant on it which was tender and cooked just perfectly, even the skins that were left on. Lunch specials come with soup(3 types available) or a spring roll and a choice of white rice, fried rice OR brown rice(no extra charge). This is a place you can go, enjoy a quiet meal for 1 or for 5. The last thing is, is that the bathroom was clean and pristine… you can tell a lot about a restaurant by its bathroom! Hope to be back soon!

Shanghai Gourmet is an excellent spot for high quality Chinese/Thai style food prepared with fresh ingredients. It really makes a difference when Asian themed food is cooked fresh. It’s not as heavy and you don’t finish the meal regretting what you ordered and dreading the digestion process. My wife and I tried three dishes on this visit. For the appetizer, it was Szechuan dumplings served with peanut sauce. Truly excellent. Hand made and with just enough kick. And this comes from someone not all that fond of peanut sauce. The two entrees were a Thai style spicy mango pork and the wok grilled garlic shrimp. The pork had an excellent balance of spice and sweet and was served with plenty of mango to complement the meat. The shrimp dish was definitely advertised right. Plenty of garlic and assorted veggies to pair with the shrimp. Both these entrees were outstanding and full of taste and came with choice of white or brown rice. I will be going back to try the crispy sea scallops served with string beans in a special sauce that I spied at the next table. They were huge and more than enough for two. Prices for all of these different dishes seem very fair for what you get in terms of quality and portion size. Service is quick but not overly friendly. Blink and you’ll miss this hidden gem as you travel the Boston Post Road in Orange. It’s tucked into a space next to a strip mall. But if you aspire to more than MSG laden takeout, then this is your spot.

I prefer this one over the Westport location. Good pan Asian cuisine. Better than average typical Chinese menu choices: shanghai soup for two is excellent, veggie lei mein is full of a variety of veggies & not too greasy, curry coconut sauces are velvety yum, chicken on a stick w Chinese 5 spice powder is tender and nice portion but don’t care for their peanut sauce, orange chicken has julienned pieces of caramelized orange peel & Thai chili– very good. Private parking. Clean bathrooms.
