I’ve been stopping into Canfield’s for years. When my nephews were younger they would get a kick out of going here and trying on all the different camouflage gear. We’d dress like the mannequins throughout the store and stand next to them just to be funny. Canfield’s has lots of camping gear, clothing and of course weapons. It’s fun to walk around and just look at all the different items they have. Recently I was in need of some hiking boots, so was finally here to make a serious purchase. What prompted my review is the awesome customer service they have. They are knowledgable and super friendly. It seems that everyone here loves their job and believes in this store, and are genuinely concerned about the customer’s satisfaction. So refreshing. Yes… so refreshing I just had to post a review!

While it lacks some of the bells and whistles that many larger chain outdoor stores have, Canfield’s manages to carve out a niche for itself that keeps me coming back to this locally-owned store. They have a great selection of hunting, fishing and camping gear, plus fancy cowboy shirts for when you’re heading to the rodeo(at least I assume that’s what they’re for). And let’s not forget their army surplus selection — good for piecing together costumes or grabbing some camo for your closet. Add in some scout gear and an impressive selection of hot sauces and you have a mix of items you can’t find all in one place elsewhere. Canfield’s, you’re a little weird, but in a good way.

Was very disappointed when I saw this was«army surplus» and found a small section with little selection of the sort. Being a bit of a prepper type I thought it would be fun to get a few things. It seemed more like a gift shop with a few outdoor items and a few bullet proof vests. They did have done unique items such as a wide array of swords and knives though. I really expected more from here advertising army surplus. I think I will stick to going to OFFUTTAFB store.

Honestly, I am not exactly sure how to rate Canfield’s. It isn’t flashy like a Cabelas or a Bass Pro Shop. Its kind of run down looking. They don’t quite have the variety of a larger sporting good store. But boy do they have depth. Want a kayak? Which one of the 100 that we have in stock do you want? How about browsing through our 100 tents that we have set up INSIDE the store? Boy Scout gear? Gotcha covered. Military surplus? You betcha! Suit of armor? Yep. Like I said, they may sometimes suffer in options, but if they do carry something you can bet they have the largest selection in town. Overall, I have to say I like the store, and it is in a good location in town.

I have always gotten great service here, and the selection is generally much better than it is in most other department, or even sporting goods stores. Prices are a bit ‘iffy’- most of the time it is a bit more than you might find elsewhere, but there are almost always specials and sales going on. A couple of quirks– there always seems to be an area being remodeled and how a given department is set up seems to change almost weekly– the book selection, for example, has really gotten smaller over time. Another is that in any given department you generally find good quality, higher end stuff, but you may also find fairly cheap things without much in the middle range. the last is that clothing seems to be the single largest growing category lately. It used to be fun to just look around, spend a few bucks, and kill an hour or two, but since my favorite areas(camping, Scouts, surplus, ‘cool stuff’) have all shrunk over time, it is not quite as much of a browsing destination– but it is still my go-to location for most outdoors stuff.

I’ve been going to Canfield’s for years; since I was in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and now when I go to buy camping and fishing supplies. I always support local stores when I get a chance and they are worth supporting. I’ve always been a fan of Canfield’s selection and customer service. Most of the store is on the pricey side, slightly higher than chains, but usually low enough to buy it here. Unfortunately some items are over twice as much as anywhere reasonable charges. Luckily, these are not items I have been needing to purchase. Their selection of military surplus is great but has declined recently. I don’t see near the amount of stuff I used to. They have a decent selection of camofluage, and a neat selection of other countries’ militaria. They have MOLLE gear, tactical stuff, and most of the stuff to quench your gear thirst but in limited colors, brands, and selection. Their camping section is better than almost anywhere I’ve been and their staff are very knowledgeable. Customer service has always been top-notch for me here. Their fishing used to be great but has gone downhill recently. Still, their prices on some items are even better and I would much rather buy from a local store. Overall, knowledgeable staff, and a selection of items that always makes me want to buy something will keep me coming back.

I must say that even though they have some impressive stuff and happen to be one of the very few places to get military surplus, it’s a tad pricey for my liking. Camping, fishing, Scouting, and military are some of the options here and quite frankly that’s all I’m concerned about. Otherwise, it’s like a miniature Cabela’s with more variety and the same prices. The Scout stuff isn’t too bad, and they even have some things that the actual Scout shop up in NW Omaha doesn’t have. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, there will be a 10% discount on all Boy and Girl Scout supplies. The biggest disappointment would be the high prices of some of their surplus items. An MRE, which could be had for $ 6, is $ 11 at Canfield’s. Obviously not all of the surplus they sell is new, but there were a couple of holes in one of the garrison caps I was considering buying. Come on, quality over quantity, folks. Of course, the high prices don’t apply to everything, as I got a pup tent(two canvas halves with enough poles and stakes to sustain it in a tornado) in very good condition for $ 25. If you’re looking for camping and Scouting supplies, Canfield’s is great. Otherwise, visit an actual surplus store.
