Neighborhood is not my favorite — although there is always parking — but food is tasty, helathy and cheap. Their lunch prices rock! Also, the ladies are super friendly and always up to a little chat(if the place is not too busy). They have Laotian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine and I like them all. Especially the sausage :-) Good place for takeout, but also eat in, it’s cute and never empty. Only thing I’m not crazy about is their vermicelli. They use a rice noodle as thick as spaghetti — I prefer the really thin angel hair type. Ah yes… they accept CC again. And they have a clean bathroom! Yay! :-D

I am happy to have finally found a great authentic Asian spot on the East Bay! Yummy representation from Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam are on offer here at Vientian Café. Don’t let the outside«hole in the wall» appearance fool you, the food is top-notch. After a hike in the area, we stopped here for sustenance. Located in a residential area, I wasn’t expecting a bustling place. Once inside, it was fairly packed but had a family-vibe; there are two dining areas and both were filled. We were so famished and everything looked great. Soooo many tasty options on the menu. We decided to order a lot of food, the satay chicken(7.95 $) and giao(7.95 $) for appetizers. For dinner, both phad si-ew and phad kee mow(aka drunken noodles) were ordered. I need to say this; I finally found chicken satay that is as good as what they serve at Amarin on Castro St. in Mountain View(my top choice for satay). The satay here at Vientian is just as good; juicy and the peanut sauce is awesome! I was also impressed with the giao; they are deep-fried egg rolls with silver noodles, black mushrooms, carrot, and ground pork, served with sweet and sour sauce, noodles, and lettuce. I never had anything like that before and I will order again. I was eating them with my hands just out of like an instinct but as I looked around I noticed other people were using hands too; subliminal influence? Haha. The main dishes were very tasty as well. The Phad si ew(8.50 $) is was slightly different from the versions I have had elsewhere(a little less spicy and rich) and was a mix of thick rice noodles, stir-fried with garlic, broccoli, egg and soy sauce. Their drunken noodles(8.50 $) were not the best I’ve ever had and probably the weak link in the meal overall; the ingredients were rice noodles, stir-fried with cabbage, broccoli, bell pepper, onion, garlic, vinegar, jalapeño peppers, and sweet basil. I wished they had a little more punch. When I go back, I am definitely going to try the Laos sausage and other stuff I’ve never had before; now that I think about it, I’m wondering if Laos sausage is similar to the Hmong version I had while in Fresno? Anyway, the location is not the best but has a certain neighborhood feel. The service was prompt and they were on top of refills and getting the check. Keep in mind, there is a minimum charge of 15 $ to use a credit card. I will be back! P. S. Don’t’ be afraid to eat with your hands here – let me clarify, the right hand is for the eating.

This place is a great go to in the middle of a small neighborhood. I go to Vientiane Café for all my Lao food needs. Mok Pha or Gai, spicy papaya salad, sticky rice, angel wings, Kao piak Sen, phở, etc… It’s small and can get crowded really fast though. Enjoy!

Crispy Rice Salad Appetizer!!! It is delicious wrapped up in the lettuce leaves and mint! Sauteed fish was on par along with the soup noodles. We also ordered the chicken larb which came with a lot of sliced gizzards in there — I don’t know if I was a huge fan. The flavor was off and very different from the larb from my favorite Thai place here on the Peninsula. Service was okay; the waitress kept interrupting our conversation which is a big pet peeve!

This place is still so good! The customers are less hipster than the ones at Champa Garden, but maybe I didn’t go during prime hipster dining hours. It was Sunday so I think that would’ve been during brunch hours and I went in the late afternoon. Anyhow, I tried some different things in addition to the naam this time. The«udon» noodle soup, steamed catfish(it’s the one that costs $ 5 and is steamed in a leaf), and Thai samosas(made with pumpkin, sweet potatoes, etc.). Everything was so good! I feel like the food here is a little more homey and simple than at Champa. Don’t get me wrong – I love both places and would choose both to dine at but for different reasons.

It’s been a really long time since I last was here, so I was a bit confused when I first walked in, since the inside looked a lot different from the first time I was here. It’s a little hole in the wall with limited seating, but what they lack in space, is made up in their food. The service here is really great. They were really patient with us, since our whole party went from five to eight people. Luckily there was already an empty table next to us, so we had no issues with seating. The first thing I had to order was the fresh young coconut and it was so good. Perfectly cold and sweet. My kind of drink. Since we had so many people, we just ordered a bunch of different items and shared it family style. I do have to say that their nam kao is yummy. I probably would not order the pad thai from here again since it was on the sweeter side than what I would’ve liked. Everything else that I did try was good, though I didn’t touch any of the spicy foods. But my friends raved about their papaya salad so do try it when you’re here if you can tolerate spicy foods better than I can.

I’ve been going to another Laotian place for years, unaware that Vientian Café even existed. Then when I was sick a few weeks ago I was searching the web for soup delivery. Unfortunately, Vientian doesn’t deliver. Fortunately, it is super close to my house, fairly inexpensive, and utterly delicious. I ordered the nam kao, laotian sausage, catfish curry, spring rolls, and kao soy(this is during two different visits), and it has all been amazing. I’m glad I found this place, but mad I didn’t know about it sooner! Yum!

I have been coming to Vientien for years now and the service is usually very good but the only issue I have is they sometimes get so busy they tend to be less attentive to customers needs. I had ask for a bit more broth for my kao poon b/c I like my bowl more soupy to cover all the extra vegetables I put in but it took way too long to come out. A couple times my entire table got kao soy and for some odd reason one bowl ended up coming out almost 5 minutes after the rest. So everyone was eating except one person. That’s not cool. When people come in groups they’d all like to start the meal together.

Had the chicken noodle soup, basil chicken and angel wings. Everything was really good! My favorite is the basil chicken. The customer service was good; friendly and attentive. The place is clean, cute, a little small, but not that busy. They were open on Memorial Day, which is wonderful because who wants the same old chain restaurants? Not me!

Good eats at an affordable price! Get the papaya salad laos style! But heads up, medium spicy is SPICY! So if you’ve never had laos type of spicy you might be better off trying mild first. But if you like the spice, then you’ll absolutely love it! Mok Gai is only $ 5 and it’s a good size portion. Tasty as well! Get the chicken larb if you’ve never tried it! Angel wings are delicious. I wasn’t crazy about the Pad See Ew but the bf really enjoyed it. It was a bit too sweet for me. The roast duck curry was good, but I think I prefer Champa Garden’s. There’s usually not a crazy wait, so it’s easy to be in and out. Definitely worth a try if you’ve never been here! The portions and prices along with the food will keep you coming back!

Been going here for years with my family and friends. I usually just order lao style papaya salad w/3 peppers(Tip: You can’t just say mild or spicy, you should tell them how many peppers since Asian people eat hella spicy food). I guess 3 peppers equates to medium spicy ha. Also always get the angel wings, lao sausage, and laarb(minced beef or chicken). Use to order ribs, but they give you less than before so it’s not worth. The num khao(crispy rice salad) is really good too!

Grossed Out and Bland food I felt that the staff wasn’t clean. The lady who was handling the dirty money, went to make my drink, without cleaning her hands, grabbed the naked straw putting her hands all over the straw and put it right thru my drink. Gross! And that is just one of the things that make me think it wasn’t the cleanest place. My first and last time coming here. Additionally, I received my food to go, I went to eat it in my car and It was cold, even after a long wait… Whatever, I warmed it up when I got home and found that it was very bland food. Definitely won’t be back.

Totally worth the drive from SF. We drove by and noticed a bunch of cop cars parked outside. If it’s good for them it has to be good for everyone. My friend had mentioned that this place was in a residential area but I didn’t realize the place resembled a house. There was like a ten minute wait because of the lunch rush, but that’s ok. I was pleased to see a special Laos menu with all the goodies. Everything was so cheap too! We ordered the Angel Wings, the chicken larb, pad kee mow, Lao sausage and sticky rice. The Laos sausage was so good! If you haven’t had it before it’s must! The angel wings was a big undercooked. I would have mentioned something but it was the last wing and I just didn’t eat it. The noodles appeared to look very bland, but I was wrong. It was full of flavored and served with cabbage, which I’ve never had before. The chicken larb was just like how my mom used to make it, complete with chopped gizzards! Aesthetically the place looks pretty foul. Could use a wipe down and the counter was all cluttered. If that doesn’t bother you too much then definitely worth the visit! Oh I did notice the place may be spelled incorrectly. Should be Vientiane, no?

I have to warn you that the location of this place was pretty sketchy, and there was also no parking lot. You’ll have to park out on the streets in the neighborhood. Other than the parking, the food was delicious! The service was friendly and attentive. The kao poun was delicious, but I personally think that there was a bit too much coconut milk. The chicken that came along with it was cooked perfectly, but it came along with bones, which made it a bit hard to eat. The chicken larb was seasoned perfectly! Gizzards also came along with it as well, which made a perfect touch! The papaya salad was so good! I personally think this was one of the best Lao style papaya salad I’ve eaten from a restaurant. It came along with noodle and cabbage on the side as well incase you wanted it. The nam kao was pretty good! This was the first time I’ve ever tried it, and I thought it was delicious! It came along with lettuce, cilantro, and mint leaves. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with these meals, but I definitely hate the location and parking situation.

Love this place, one of the best places for authentic Laos cuisine. Every time I go there I always get Lao style papaya salad, nam kao, ka piek, chicken laarb, Thai tea, and ka soy. Papaya salad– be aware that when you are ordering any type of level spicy that you are capable to handle it. American spicy is nothing compared to Asian spicy. If you don’t eat spicy a lot then I would recommend the mild because it has a small kick. Nam kao– always the best in the bay so far . Ka piek– good but not as thick as champa. There is an option to add pork blood if you want. Chicken laarb– taste really good. Love it! Thai tea– awesome thing is that their large is well worth sharing. More bang for your $$. Ka soy– it’s supposed to be known for their kasoy. It’s a little spicy. I like mine more of a soupy then spicy. For people who like Vietnamese Bun Bo Hue will enjoy this. Comes with the thick white rice noodles. Service is okay. But because the food is so good it compensated for the okay service.

Come here for some authentic and quickly served food! I came for dinner with my friend and she said this was the best place for Thai and Laos food and I can’t help but agree! We ordered the pork spare ribs, angel wings, seafood drunken noodles, chicken pad Thai and Laos style papaya salad. Everything was pretty good! The spare ribs were meaty and had a ginger flavor. The wings were crispy, sweet and savory. I’ve never had drunken noodles but I wasn’t too amazed by this. The pad Thai was exactly how I like it! Saucy and flavorful. Best pad Thai I’ve had and at $ 8 a plate, no one can beat it! I will come back for sure and order pad Thai here. It was also my first time trying Laos style papaya salad. It was very fishy smelling but delicious when mixed with the noodles and cabbage. So happy I tried this place!

I have been in San Leandro for half a year now and have been needing a Thai restaurant, which does not exist in decent quality, so to Oakland I went. I found this place as an alternative to my original destination. Two nights in a row with two different friends. It is in the middle of a neighborhood, seems to be a converted house, and as such is cozy with a limited seating capacity, which wasn’t a problem. It was relatively full on both the Saturday and Sunday nights I went, which I took as a good sign. The food was delicious – I had red curry one night and pad si ew the other. The curry especially had lots of spice and flavor. The noodles benefited from a little soy sauce, but otherwise was still tasty. The only reason I gave it a four was for the delivery of food. The service itself was fine – the server was around enough, took orders in a timely fashion, and didn’t make any mistakes. However, we ordered appetizers both nights, and both nights they either arrived with or after the main dishes. If they could get the timing of how the food is pushed out, I would have rated them higher. Otherwise, it’s a good thing I don’t live in the neighbordhood because I’d be walking there for meals all the time :)

Like Champa Garden, this is another Thai/Laotian hidden gem in Oakland! And like Champa Garden, it is also in the residential outskirts of downtown. It is literally on the bottom floor of a house. But unlike Champa, Vientian also serves Vietnamese food! A little quirk that really surprised me. Admittedly, it looks a little sketch from the outside but like any other establishment in this city, you and your car come at your own risk. The food, however, more than makes up for it, if authentic Thai/Laotian/Vietnamese is what you’re craving. There aren’t many restaurants attempting the same trifecta, so you’re in good hands! I came here with a few friends who are regulars and they would not shut up about Vientian so I gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty dang good! We had the angel wings(my friends’ favorite), spicy larb(very spicy but also super good), pad see ew and assorted Viet dishes! From a Thai and Laotian standpoint, both offerings were very authentic. The food tasted like a less polished version of Champa Garden’s, more like a casual, home-made version of the same fare. If you love eating in hole-in-the-wall, family-run establishments with mismatched plates and freshly brewed Thai iced tea, then you’ll be in heaven. This is not a sit-down joint to take a date, more like a late-night jaunt with friends. As for the Vietnamese food, it was also pretty authentic. Being Vietnamese myself, I was surprised how well done the dishes were. I would definitely return for other dishes, and that is saying something since I’m extremely picky about Viet food and usually don’t eat it outside of San Jose. Anyhow, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore a local favorite or just feinin’ for some spicy, saucy angel wings, this is your place!

My BFFs and I had an amazing dinner here! Everything was very fresh, not overly oiled, fried or heavy… it tasted like I was having an authentic and ORGANIC Laotian meal. Though I’m pretty sure Vientian doesn’t boast being organic, but this is not a problem. Its just that sometimes you can just taste a higher quality ingredient, and everything we shared tasted high quality, which always makes food more flavorful in turn. So, considering the flavors, all I have to say is MMMmMmmmM!!! There wasn’t a dish we didn’t like and hardly a morsel was left behind. I think their two best sellers are the Nam Kao(fried rice) and Giao(egg roll), which were my favorite of the 6 dishes we got. DONOTPASSTHESEUP! If you don’t have the occasion to make this a regular go-to spot(like me, because I don’t live in the Bay anymore) then I recommend taking a group and getting lots to share. Everything we tried(and didn’t try but spotted on other tables) looked, smelled, and WAS fantastic. Its in the hood but it’s alllll good.

This restaurant is located in East Oakland but it still doesn’t stop me from eating here. Coming from a Laotian background, I believe Vientian Café serves the best authentic Lao food in the East Bay. Even though their food is great, nothing compares to my family Laotian dishes. One of my friend’s wanted to try Lao food for the first time — I been here a few times and I knew this would be the perfect place. The 3 of us ordered family style. Here’s an overview of what we ordered: Angel Wings — Fried chicken wings fried in chili sauce & lemon juice(5⁄5) Sai Ooa — Baked Sausage(4⁄5) Beef Larb — Meat salad; Ordered one with mild spiciness level and the other very spicy(5⁄5) Kao Poun — Vermicelli noodles in red coconut curry broth w/chicken — opted out on the pork blood because the boys didn’t want it.(4⁄5) Sticky Rice — Came in a cute little bamboo sticky rice container(5⁄5) The portions were generous and our bill came out to $ 43, super cheap for the amount of food we ordered!

I was pretty upset when I got home and open my kapoon order only to find one chicken wing in the soup. The other piece of chicken was the bottom of the drum stick which is inedible and the piece of the spine on the chicken. I will no longer order from this restaurant. They are very skimpy.

I’m always weary of this place because of its location, but it doesn’t stop me from eating here because the food is simply AMAZING. Authentic Laos/Thai food, what more can you ask for? Everything here is delicious, from the rice plates to the noodle soups, especially the Kao Piak soup; the broth and noodles taste super fresh. The appetizers are also a good pick, I enjoy the egg rolls with the lettuce wrap and noodles, while my sisters like the larb, Lao sausage, or papaya salad. To top it off, their Thai tea here is the best. It’s perfectly sweetened. Customer service is good, you can tell that the cooks are a loving family who like to make delicious food to share.

This place is great. Never had a bad experience before… or that I can think of. I usually get to go, but I’ve went for lunch and dinner before, all were of course good. I usually eat their Lao sausages, nam kao, larp(chicken & beef), pad se eew, ka piak, pad Thai, fried rice and sticky rice. These are my favorite to eat and I highly recommend these food. I will say their ka soy… eh…truthfully if they didn’t put that stinky meat in there their ka soy would have been bomb, but because of that odor it gives off, it turned off the taste and when I first got it a couple of yrs ago, it was my last. Not sure if it’s still the same now. This place isn’t as packed like Champa Garden is, but don’t be fooled, this place can get packed especially during dinner/weekends. Don’t be surprised if they don’t pick up their phones, just means they are super busy. Also, their staff are nice never had anyone ever be rude to me before.

Made the trek from San Jose to OakLand just because I was craving for some authentic Laos food. This estabLishment came highLy recommended so why not… The Vientiane Café is can easiLy get overLooked because it’s in the very corner of a neighborhood and the restaurant is the Lower LeveL of what I think is a Victorian home. We ordered: Laotian Sausage Lao StyLe Papaya SaLad AngeL Wings Seafood Pad Thai I was not bLown away by the sausage. ALthough the AngeL wings were crispy on the outside and cooked perfectLy on the inside, the sticky icky sauce tasted simpLy of sweet and sour sauce that you can buy in a bottLe at your typicaL Asian grocery store. Seafood Pad Thai was good but the show stopper for me was the Lao styLe papaya saLad. I’ve been to my share of Thai/Cambodian/Laotian restaurants and not a singLe pLace compares. Vientiane doesn’t mess around with the spice so if you can’t eat foods that are fLaming hot, Let the server know. We got a Large and it stiLL wasn’t enough for me– I WANTEDMORE! Before we Left I ended up ordering some saLad togo for my mom and beLieve me, it took a Lot of wiLL-power to not gorge on it myseLf. I might come back to try some of the noodLe soup offerings– those seem to be reaLLy popuLar– BUT not before trying Champa Garden(aLso Located in OakLand).

This is a small, family business. I hesitated writing this review because I don’t want gentrifiers to find out about this is wonderful gem! This place is about a 2-min drive from my family’s house, so I always go here when I am craving Southeast Asian food. Food: Papaya salad(Lao style) is a must if you can handle the smell and spice. I always get it with three peppers. They spiciness might make you cry, but it’s better when it’s spicy! Some popular items are pad sew, pad thai, nam kao, chicken wings, lao sausages. You actually can’t go to wrong with any dish on the menu. Drinks: trust me on this, other their Thai tea! It’s super yummy and the large size is hella worth. It’s a bang for your buck$!

Been meaning to try this place for ages! It wasn’t bad, but I don’t think we ordered all the right items. The mediocre: we came around 8:20pm, which we thought was plenty of time, since they close at 9pm, but not so. They are in a hurry to leave, so we were quite rushed to put in our orders. Maybe that’s why we didn’t love our dishes. The beef noodle soup is basically a Lao/Thai rendition of phở. Which is to say, it’s weird! More potent in flavor,(more fish sauce too?) just not quite that good when it looks like phở but tastes a bit off. It wasn’t horrible– just a bit different. I ordered a beef stew from the $ 5 menu, what a mistake! I was warned that they use a LOT of cilantro so it has a potent flavor. I just wasn’t expecting it to be soo mushy and slimy. Lots of mushrooms, little beef, lots of slime.(ok its not slime but it has the same texture…) Would not recommend anything from the $ 5 menu. The good: stick to the angel wings– can’t go wrong here. They were flavored just right and tastes like what you expect. The nam kao– yummy! I loved the crispy fried rice, and the lettuce wraps are always fun. Only thing that felt like missing was a dipping sauce, however it doesn’t really need it because it has plenty of flavor. So much so that like most Lao/Thai foods, everything starts tasting the same after awhile. Overall, I would probably just stick to the popular dishes, and not come within an hour before closing time.

Ah… It seems like just yesterday that I used to live like 2 mins away from this place! I wish I had taken better advantage of it! My 2 fav go to dishes are are. can you guess? Yes for this noodle head, spice head, I love the Kao Piak(Rice flour, thick noodle soup with chicken and blood cubes) and also the Kao Poun(Curry noodle soup with rice noodles, I usually get with chicken). Toss in some dry red pepper, and chili oil, and don’t forget the pickled peppers, and you have a recipe for a happy fire eating foodie. Not enough protein for you? Have you had a Laos sausage before? These are like the yummiest sausage ever. Add a side order of this with some sticky rice. They used to have fried pig ears for sale in little plastic baggies by the register, If you love pork rinds, you will LOVE this.

Location Truly a mom & pop establishment — it’s on the bottom level of a house in a corner block tucked away in East Oakland. This is the spot if you want a no-frills, delicious Thai/Viet/Laotian meal! Service Definitely like stepping into someone’s household — you can hear the chef humming in the back, and the servers are fixing tables while talking about the latest gossip. Friendly and quick service too. Food This is really why this place is so popular — lots of repeat business, family banquets and all. The food is the stuff Anthony Bourdain would make the trek for — their $ 5 Lao Specialties are amazing! Try these: Mok Pa – steamed fish Oar Larm — beef stew Sai Ooa — Laotian sausage Angel Wings — ’nuff said Thod Nok — deep fried quail Papaya Salad — Thai style

Ahh… yet another restaurant I never would have come across on my own, but one I am so happy to have discovered! With so many Vietnamese and Thai restaurants dotting the Bay Area’s landscape, it’s always a treat to come across other Southeast Asian cuisines. Really, why aren’t there more Laotian/Malaysian/Singaporean/Indonesian restaurants out there? Although more homely/neighborhood joint than trendy, Vientian Café is no less of a destination spot. In part because there’s not much nearby(the area is a mix of residential and commercial), but mostly because the food is just that good. The menu is a mix of Thai, Vietnamese, and Laotian dishes that covers starters, noodles, soups, house specialties, and desserts(they also have lunch specials). We may have only had a handful of dishes, but everything we tried and saw was super legit. – ANGELWINGS — Deep Fried Chicken Wings Fried with Chili Sauce and Lemon Juice…$ 6.50 ( ) Although I didn’t find the chicken to be particularly juicy, the taste of the dish was pretty solid. The wings had a great crunch to them and I liked how there was just a touch of spice to the otherwise sticky, sweet sauce(though not overly sweet). – PAPAYASALAD(Lao Style) — Green Papaya, Peppers, Lime Juice, Garlic, and Tomatoes in a Spicy Sauce…$ 6.95(small) ( ) Not sure how it compares to their Thai version, but this was one of the better papaya salads I’ve had. Given the choice of «hot» or «mild», we opted for the latter, which was the right call for us(just enough heat to tickle our tongues). As for the papaya, it had the perfect crispness and freshness to balance the mix of salty and spicy flavors. Yum. – KAOPOUN — Vermicelli Noodles served in Mild Coconut Curry Sauce with Choice of Chicken or Fish(Cooked Pork Blood optional)…$ 7.95 ( ) I opted for chicken without the pork blood and, other than forgetting to request no cilantro(crud), this was awesome! The coconut curry sauce was amazing — rich, delicious, and deep in flavor. Plus, they didn’t skimp on the chicken and noodles either, making for a hearty and terrific dish! Also, while the neighborhood definitely isn’t as lively as the likes of Grand Ave or Rockridge, I don’t know if I agree with it being«shady» either. Rather, it’s just very quiet, as there’s not a lot of foot traffic. Plus, it’s still better than the likes of the Tenderloin and with much easier parking(we parked right in front). In any case, shady or not, Vientian Café is definitely worth going out of your way for(and the servers are so nice!).

Lao food is best here. Suggest the nam Kao, sausage, wings. Get a pack of frozen lao sausage for $ 7. That’s $ 3.50/lb. Cheaper than sausages at the store. I get the chicharone and Thai tea while you wait for seating. If you really want to be adventurous, get the lao beef stew and som pak, the greens.

Stopped in here one night because I was craving(as I usually am) gang keow wan(green curry). Waited quite awhile, but it was understandable considering it was a weekend night and this place is popular! The curry was so incredibly tasty and perfectly spicy that I knew I would be coming back. Found myself back here for lunch takeout. Quicker service. Decided to try the Laotian sausages this time in addition to my usual green curry. Phenomenal! This is my new favorite place for Thai in Oakland.

My favorite is the kapiet which is laos version of chicken noodle soup(perfect of you are sick) their laos style papaya salad is really good as well but i wished they had pickle crabs to put it in there. I highly recommend this place if you are craving laos food or have never tried laos food.

I’m hesitant to tell others about this place because I don’t want it to become even more popular that it already is. But, this is the best hole-in-the-wall for Thai food! It is one of Oakland’s hidden gem, literally. Word on the street is that this place use to be a house where a couple sold food out of. Makes sense if you see where it’s located. Must haves: Beef larb, Laos sausages, angel wings, shrimp pad thai, pad kee mao, bbq chicken
