i’m rating sun hong kong when it was most popular, not when it went out a few years ago with barely a star left. sun hong kong came upon the scene maybe 20 years ago and changed the concept of chinese eateries/chinese delis/noodle shops when it opened in frisco, oaktown, and berkeley with affiliates to follow in danville and foster city. in oaktown, they stayed open till 3 and probably caused the demise of the popular china station in berkeley. shk offered reasonable prices for chinese deli items as well as chow mein, noodle soup dishes. many items were popular amongt the abc’s and nonasian patrons. in recent years, shk was overpassed by newer competitors who raised the standards of quality to a higher level while shk continued to let it’s standards slip. i’m not sad that they are gone. i’m sad they didn’t maintain their high standards.

I come here to get my late night grease. I usually order the tomato beef pan fried noodles. Pretty good and often hits the spot.

This used to be the«spot» back in high school… and it still is for me! Most of the time, I have less than $ 7 in my wallet and that pretty much takes care of business. They’re open late so if your hungry and craving rice instead of In and Out… this is it.

I used to go here all the time with a certain«Asian» friend. The first time he took me in there, I couldn’t eat my food because the smell of fish was so strong and also because I was feeling slightly paranoid about such an «authentic»(read: not pristine clean) chinese restaurant. The huge murky fish tank at the back was freaking me out, and I ordered pot stickers which happen to be kinda yucky at SHK. BUT… he convinced me to come back again(& again & again) and I grew to LOVE it. Nowadays I don’t get over there nearly enough, and I think the owners are different now(compared to say, 4 or 5 years ago) but the food is still good,(not as good as previous owners, sadly) …my favorite choices being the pan fried noodles with chicken and bok choy and the beef with green onion and egg(well scrambled) over rice. Those are DElicious! Also, they get points for being open super late and for being hella cheap.

Sun Hong Kong is a late night favorite of ours. They food there is really good and for some reason it tastes better after 2 a.m. I’m not sure why that is but I think it has to do with me being drunk and hungry. The salt and pepper prawns are the best! Also try the pan fried noodles. There are always specials written in Chinese on the walls. I always think that stuff is probably awesome but it’s like a secret club and if you can’t read Chinese you can’t order. I have never asked about it because I think it is better left unknown. Mmmm, this review is making me hungry!

Egg over rice. I don’t know why you would get anything else. This dish is the best. We get it each it time I go with my friends. It’s basically a semi scrambled egg over rice with beef. It’s worth every penny. If you were to get anything else. It is also really good. The food is spectacular. Wait, remember. If there is food hanging in the window and looks a little dirty, then the place must be good.

This a great place for late night«Hong Kong Style» fast food. Some folks wouldn’t know the difference when it comes to the various style of Chinese cooking. I for one love Chinese food in all it’s variations. The duck at Sun is just the right kind of salty. Their Salt and Pepper spareribs always hit the spot. How many ways can one eat mien? If it’s not on the menu, they can make it for you.(If you know how to order it that is.) One problem that Occidentals have with most Oriental restaurants is that they always order the same-typical-choices, which are tasteless fares made for the non-Asians. Sun Hong Kong offers more than that. Sun Hong Kong is quintessentially Hong-Kong-ese.

Mediocre chinese, especially considering the options available in that neighborhood. Skip is and go to Shan Dong or Vien Huong instead.
