Save The Bay

Save The Bay is such a GREAT organization that has been around since 1961! Save the bay had been around for over 50 years! Say What? That’s amazing!
I first learned about Save the Bay because of Unilocal Helps-​Save The Bay Volunteer Event which was located at the MLK Shoreline! Such a beautiful view next to the highway. I have to admit this event was a great experience. Being able to volunteer with great people in the community: Girl scouts, High school students and some Unilocal friends that were working together to make positive changes in the community! :) I love it!
Save The Bay works together to protect the Bay from pollution and reckless Shoreline development to make it clean and healthier for the people and the wildlife.
Thank you Bryan and Jack for spending your Saturday morning 3÷8÷15 with the Unilocal squad along with other great people that came to volunteer! They were nice, motivational and knowledgeable! They provided us with gloves, picks, knee rest, and sunscreen and of course, WATER! I worked very closely with a girlfriend to plant some new plants into the nursery by the shoreline. Who would have thought that day would have been my first day actually holding a Crab! (One dead and the other alive). I didn’t think I was THAT much into the wildlife! Whoo!
Thank you to the donators that donated the snacks for all of us! The bars were delicious and definitely what I needed to continue my daily workout.
I had a great time and I am so happy to be part of this event. I look forward to being involved again next year! It is SO nice to be able to get come wildlife knowledge and help out in the community! I was SO sore the next day but «Hard work pays off», right?

Went out to the MLK Jr. Shoreline Park yesterday morning for Unilocal Helps + Save the Bay — could not have asked for a more gorgeous morning!
Jack and Bryan were a helpful and friendly duo — we really enjoyed the educational segments that framed the work. I’d never been to MLK Shoreline before, and actually didn’t even know it existed. Learning about the bay fill and jacked-​up marshlands of the Bay Area made me want to go buy a bunch of shovels and start planting native grasses all over the freakin’ place.
Did you know there are mice in the area that have adapted to drink saltwater? That’s badass. The least I could do is haul some mulch for those little guys.
STB provided us with gloves, trowels, and picks, along with knee rests and sunscreen. Their nursery had grown the seedlings we were planting that day. We appreciated the mid-​shift water and granola bar break! Next time I need to remember my water bottle wear some jeans I can get dirty. It’s much more fun if you get down into it!
We had a great time, and I can say that swinging a pick into asphalt-​fortified soil has made me *sore*! If you want to get outside, improve the Bay, and get in a good workout, sign up for site restoration with Save the Bay!

These great folks hosted the Unilocal Helps Celebrate National Wildlife Week with Save the Bay event. We joined forces with Girl Scout troops, Cal students, high schoolers, and other Bay enthusiasts. Today’s three hour challenge resulted in over 300 native plants finding a new home at the MLK Shoreline. Before we began our hard work, we were treated to a history lesson about the changes wrought on the East Bay from salt mining to landfill to today’s quest to restore the marshland habitat. What I really appreciated was involving my six-​year-​old daughter. She worked hard helping to dig through that terrible soil, mulching with wood chips, watering, and cleanup. She also enjoyed the shoreline exploration one of our hosts, Jack, gave all the little ones so they were able to see crabs and other critters. Thanks to Nique, our Unilocal hostess with the mostest, who managed to make marshland restoration look chic (but we Elites already knew she would). I’d definitely volunteer with Save the Bay again. They were organized, enthusiastic, and friendly.

Fantastic organization. If you want to give back to the community and to future generations, Save the Bay is a great way to do it. The three-​hour morning of removing invasive plants from wetlands was well organized, well staffed, and well equipped. They even had gardening gloves for everyone, but I would recommend bringing your own. If the task will involve weeding, bring leather gloves. Some thorns go right through cloth-​based gloves.
After meeting everyone, the staff gave a brief talk on the habitat we would be working in and then we got started. During a mid-​morning break, they explained the history of Save the Bay, and the progress the bay has made since the 60’s. There’s also a great documentary on the group on KQED.
Upcoming events include clean-​up of trash and planting of native species. Time well spent

Review #50…Can’t believe I’m half way there to finishing the Unilocal 100 challenge. I tried figuring out what I should review as my halfway mark. Should I review a restaurant, tourist attraction, department store or??? Then I realized the perfect 50^th Review…
SAVE THE BAY! What is this? It’s a non-​profit organization where you give your time to clean up or plant new plant life near the bay. I signed us up through the website
We picked our time, day and location. Once it was confirmed we then contacted Go Volunteer
an organization that tracks our volunteer hours.
The day we volunteered, we wore clothes that we knew we could get dirty in and Boy! Did we get dirty! The directions on how to get there was very easy. They had signs posted everywhere for the «meet up» location. Once we arrived, they did a tutorial and the reason behind it. It was very educational.
We started heading towards the area where the planting would begin. We grabbed our gloves, shovel, and plants and went at it. We were some crazy volunteers on a mission to plant a lot. As we were planting, I whispered in my honey’s ear…“babe, does it seem like we are taking out the same plants we are planting?” He started laughing and he said «I thought the same thing too… but we’ll do what they say?» We both had a puzzled look. Half way through it, I guess my leadership (if you want to call it that) personality came out, and I started directing a few people just to dig the holes, while the rest of us would follow behind and place the plants in the hole with dirt and another group would follow with water and bark. I thought this would be more efficient. Almost like an assembly line. It worked for a long time, until we were planting faster than the organizer could place flags on the ground.
In the end, we stepped back and looked at our accomplishment and thought, AWWW this was so much fun! It is always nice to give back to the community and not ask for anything in return. The benefit is a job well done. This was our first volunteer project together. Now we are off to Habitat for Humanity to help build homes!

First time working with them we planted native plants at the MLK regional shoreline park. It was a fun experience meeting new people and learning about the bay. Taught us exactly what to do and explained some history about the bay and their organization. Would love to volunteer with them again!

I’ve volunteered with this organization a few times with my husband and 7 year old son and have always had a great time cleaning up the bay. The people that run this organization are just the nicest people, their funny and answer all our questions. The events are zero-​waste so be prepared to bring your own snacks and water although they will provide some if you forget.
FYI If you are planning on volunteering:
Be ready to get dirty, you will get very very dirty but it is so worth it.
Wear gloves and be very careful! My husband and I found a couple syringes while cleaning up the marsh.
Bring your own buckets! Sometimes there is not enough.
Wear hats and sunscreen! Even if isnt that hot, you will get hot and burned out by the water.
Have fun and be nice to your fellow volunteers! You are giving back to the earth, don’t be a jerk out there, were all in this together

I have had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer with this organization.
The teams are educated and working to protect, preserve and commend the San Francisco Bay through cleaning up debris in creeks to planting seeds and pulling weeds. I joined a group from work during my last visit to the Peninsula for Save the Bay where we pulled massive weeds for a half day. Wow, the feeling of accomplishment in restoring our precious land is certainly a joy in honoring nature. I recommend volunteering with this fun organization… especially since you get to spend your time outdoors!

I have volunteered with Save The Bay several times and am very familiar with the staff. They are all so welcoming, and I love the fact that they are dedicated to protecting our SF bay and the surrounding wildlife.
The office always is very organized when I arrive to help, and there are always volunteer opportunities that involve kayaking, pulling invasive species, and wetland restoration.
What a great way to be in touch with nature and the outdoors while helping to preserve and restore the bay area!

my earth day Unilocal is for Save the Bay. not only is this an amazing organization of dedicated people… it is also a necessary organization to keep the bay area beautiful and thriving with life. we are spoiled by nature here, but also have to remember we live in a major city that takes a bit of awareness for it’s upkeep. and that means you!
volunteering is fun and feels good! spending the day outdoors and learning about native plants and wildlife is interesting. no time for that? start simple by carrying your own reusable bags to the store (and i don’t just mean for groceries… any store!) plastic bags are gross. much more stylish (and they won’t end up in the bay):

hooray for Save the Bay!

As an out-​rigger paddler, I spend a lot of time out on the bay. So it’s only natural that I belong to an organization that protects the waters that I love so much. I’m looking forward to a long and happy relationship with this organization!

If you ever have a couple of hours to spare and feel like a planeteer, check out their website. Soak in the great outdoors while doing something nice for the place you live. Who knows? Maybe one day it’ll all be gone.
One fine Saturday morning, we paddled to middle bair and planted alkali heath seedlings. Guides Crystal and Megan were knowledgeable about the island history and dedicated to preserving wildlife and nature. It’s sad because it takes years of effort to see their work come to fruition. Kudos to their patience. It felt nice to walk with so few people on this island and be momentarily displaced from retail stores and housing construction and no cars. During our paddle ride, we would pick up floating trash – some found bottles, tons of styrofoam, wrappers, an old yellow power ranger and even a shoe. Think twice before littering people!

Save the Bay is a great organization which focuses on restoring and protecting the beautiful San Francisco Bay by improving it to be a clean and healthy place for humans and the wildlife. Their team who leads groups to participate in volunteer work are very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. I recently participated in helping restore the MLK shoreline by weeding and planting. It was fun and very motivating to continue with efforts in making the world a better place to live :)

I used to share office space with these folks and they are totally cool, nice and fully committed to their purpose.
How committed are these folks you ask? Well, they would live with the stench of amphibians in the freezer that were being held for some of the class visits they did. THAT is dedication.
