I just DELETED my two previous 5-star reviews because the owners are not the same. Ever heard of «A Horse With No Name?» Well, this is a «Sandwich Shop With No Name». Literally, there is no sign and no name for this place now. They still make sandwiches and I’ve come a few times but today was my last. I asked for a cheese sandwich and the lady said they don’t have cheese sandwiches. Really? I know I bought one here last month. Then the other lady said«Grilled Cheese» and the lady said, we don’t have grilled cheese — no cheese. C’mon now, I know a sandwich shop should have some damn cheese all up in here! Perhaps they didn’t like the way I look or smelled. But I dressed nice today and took a shower this morning. Not sure why they would say they don’t have cheese. I would understand it she said they ran out of cheese but they don’t use cheese — wth??? So I went next door to Annie’s Deli to give them my business.

This place is not the same. New owner, new employees… new everything. The food does not taste the same, the prices went up A LOT! Not happy! I used to love this place not anymore!

I should have reviewed this place years ago as the owner was super friendly and the food so flavorful. Its been under new owners for a month or so I believe and they appear to have kept the same menu, but there has been an obvious change in who is preparing the food. There used to be an interior to this place, but a few months ago they cleared the front half of this place and its just alot of dull wasted empty space. I have been getting their chicken pasta salad for years and its always been sooooo good. Ive turned many of my co workers on to it. Since the change in ownership I have heard there has been a change in the taste of the food. I actually went to check it out today, and they are right… the chicken salad looks noticeably different, but I figured if they kept the same menu the flavor has to be there. Wrong! At $ 2.95 which is inexpensive it taste nothing like it did before, its like eating flavorless pasta with flavorless chicken. I wont be eating here anymore unless I hear of change. My advice is that they change the menu if they cant keep up with the previous standards of food. Im at my desk now with salt, pepper, a packet of mustard and other seasonings trying to make this work for now. I cant reccomend this place right now with the quality of food being sent out. I work in the area so I will give them time and possibly check them out again. No cheers for this place right now, and I hope they get it together soon.

I have to update my review. Unfortunately this sandwich shop is no longer the great place it used to be. They’ve stopped carrying some of my favorite sandwiches, mortadella & Reuben sandwiches. I don’t think they are as organized as they used to be. They are nice people, but I think they are under new management. I wish them success, but I won’t be eating lunch here as often as I used to.

My current favorite place to get a sandwich on my lunch break! They also do amazing and affordable salads, soups, and teriyaki bowls. Best deal in the city center! I had never had hot sauce on a sandwich before, and it is a revolutionary idea. Do take time to notice the«Mulan» picture near the register featuring our Governor. Very funny though probably not intentional…

On a roll is my local work coffee shop. Located on the bottom floor of the Elihu Harris State building it is just a short walk away from my office. I am addicted to Hazelnut coffee and they are my regular provider. I just have to make it there before 11am when they run out. They also have an espresso bar I have never tried. Their breakfast sandwiches,(served til’ 10:30ish) with sausage, egg, and cheese on an English muffin are like a fresh more delish version of a McMuffin. How do they make those eggs so perfect? Lovin’ it! When I’m not feeling well I can always count on a cup of their Chicken and Rice to cheer me up. I also think their Chili is better than the one they serve at SF Soup Company. Just be sure to ask for no toppings because they add a ton of cheese and onions. They have a full sandwich and salad menu. The only thing I order with some regularity is their lasagna. It comes with salad and the price point is pretty decent when I’m craving something warm. Mostly I come here for coffee and miscellaneous snacks. It’s not a full on sundries shop like City Center Sundries, their selection is more limited. Things they sell: flavored coffee including French Roast, French Vanilla, and Hazelnut; assorted teas, donuts(in the morning), a small variety of Chobani and Yoplait yogurt, small containers of fresh fruit and veggies, sushi, small milks, coke products, along with some juices, rock stars, redbulls, Tylenol, and NyQuil/DayQuil packs.

Good for salads. Tell them to go easy on the dressing b/c it will get drenched. A full size salad with bread can go for less tan $ 7! Sometimes I will get the premade pasta salads too. filling and inexpensive. Good for place for quick bite in the downtown civic center area.

Wonderful, Friendly Staff! The Oriental Chicken Salad is the best and the large order can be split between two people!

Simple spot with basic take out breakfast basics. Breakfast burritos can be great without the potatoes — they never cook them enough. For lunch, there sandwiches are possibly best in the area. Fresh ingredients, tasty meat and good bread. Also, the service is good. Very friendly people, they give you the comfortable feeling you should have when your buying food from somebody. I recommend for people that find themselves at the state building. Small and inexpensive.

It’s cheap! They’ve scaled down on their portions a bit… but where else are you going to go to get a full salad for $ 6!

This place is a fairly small deli, and offers some pretty cheap eats. Sandwiches and salads are popular here, and customers are plentiful during the lunch hour, with a big portion of the crowd from the fed building just out the door. I’ve only had the sandwiches, and potato salad from the case. They were pretty simple, like something you could have made at home. But that’s not always bad. Tasty and inexpensive is all you need in the middle of your work day.

This is a great place to stop for a sandwich in downtown Oakland. They have a great selection of sandwiches and I have never had anything I didn’t like. The prices aren’t to bad either. Besides sandwiches they also have some salads, a large assortment of chips and drinks. They have quite a few soup options that I have yet to try.

This place had very tasty and large salads. It’s very simple food done well. Prices are very reasonable. I’ve had several sandwiches and salads, and you cannot beat the value. I also had the egg salad sandwich, and I have to say it was the best I’ve ever had. I can’t wait to try the other sandwiches, and spaghetti. The Lasagna tasted like a Stofers frozen meal. I’d recommend skipping that. Food preparers and register staff are all friendly. Prices are excellent for what you get. Great job On A Roll!

You can’t really argue with On A Roll: simple, well-made sandwiches, lots of options, really friendly people, quick service, good price. If you like all those things, come here. You won’t be disappointed. If you don’t like those things, then we should probably be having a different conversation right now… Anyway, this is a great place for your lunchtime fix. The only downside to this place is that they stop serving lunch at 1pm I think, so make sure you get there in time.

Pretty solid for what it is. I tried On a Roll for the first time because it’s what my boss wanted for lunch and I am a minion(a minion charging her lunch to the company card at least). The entire set-up is really charming in a sort of janky way; it just looks sort of outdated and very cafeteria like. There’s a wall with a large variety of chips/snacks/candy, a wall of beverages and then a sandwich station in the back of the store. The selections are listed clearly on the board, easy to understand and plenty of options. I got the roast turkey on dutch crunch while my boss had a salami on sweet roll(um, yeah… that was my stupid choice. I don’t really eat enough salami sandwiches to know what bread it should go on). I kept messing up my boss’ order because it was hard to divine what he wanted, but the lady making the sandwich was quite patient about it. The cashier(owner?) was also super friendly and seemed to know a lot of his customers. My order(2 sandwiches, 2 bags of chips, 2 drinks) was $ 15. Good deal. My sandwich tasted really good too. I was happy they offered roast turkey as an option since I’m not that into cold cuts. The roast turkey tasted Thanksgiving-ish; I liked that they had dark meat too, though I guess that’s a turn off for some. I just wish they had toasted my sandwich longer so that it would be crunchier. I don’t love deli sandwiches but this was both satisfactory and cheap(and way healthier than the gross crap I order at Quizno’s) so I expect to be back.

Great lunch place! I like their veggie sandwich which is filled with fresh ingredients. Their chicken salad sandwich is pretty good, too. It’s nice to get a sandwich that tastes more original than the ones at the chain sandwich places. Their full size salads are huge and flavorful and are only about $ 5.50. I’m looking forward to trying more of the menu items that they offer. The service is quick here and the workers are pretty cool.

I need to go get my lunch… If I don’t then I might not leave my desk all day and by the end of the day I will be angry and bitter. Well I am always angry and bitter, I will just be more angry and bitter. On A Roll is a real surprise. They serve fresh custom sandwiches and salads along with nearly every type of soft drink on the planet. When I only have a few moments to get lunch this is my standby.
