Yay mangonada! The small was more than enough for me and a great deal at $ 4.50. They use fresh mango and add a scoop of mango sorbet at the top. The chili powder is not overcoming and goes well with the mango. Perfect dessert for a hot day. Think of this as an elevated version of ICEE.

This little shop is absolutely precious. Of course, I love everything in the Fruitvale Public Market. I love bringing friends here to try the unique ice cream flavors. Curdled milk, cinnamon, corn?! It’s not your average ice cream shop and it tastes great! If you feel overwhelmed by their huge list of ice cream flavors, they are more than happy to give you a sample. The ladies and men there are always so kind. I recently visited to cure my mangonada(mangos, chamoy(spicy sauce), lime juice, chili powder, sorbet, and shaved ice with a tamarind straw) craving. Yum! They hosted a live music session in the plaza on Cinco De Mayo. I love when businesses support the community. It was especially great because there were families, children, adults, and all kinds of people there, very welcoming.

Thank you for your charity!!! Mercy Retirement and Care Center love you! I work at the Retirement Center down The way and our residents were curious about trying corn flavored ice cream. So we called and they gladly helped us out. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you so much for your charity, you made a lot of seniors happy. And I do mean a lot!

Best home made ice cream ever! This place is legit. Not only do you get hand churned homemade ice cream at a reasonable price but the flavors are just so delicious. They also offer a variety of snacks, banana splits and my favorite — mangonada. This savory sweet mixture of mango, lime and chili makes my mouth water every time I think about it. AMAZING!

My favorite place to get a mangonada. If you’re not into spicy then don’t get this since it has chili powder and chamoy. Aside from that, I love the tamarind stick they treat you with. The staff is nice and work pretty fast which helps in case you get there during a very busy time. There is not very much seating but the options are indoor and outdoor. If you sit outdoors beware, there is a cart that sells what look like delicious churros. Another great thing about this place is that they will mix raspado(snow cone) flavors if you like. I’ve had mango and coconut which was delicious. Last note: CASHONLY! there is an ATM machine nearby though and a chase bank across the street.

The ice cream is delicious and some of the flavors are very unusual, including the curdled milk. We got the delicious burnt milk. The owner is super nice as well. A true Oakland gem.

We always talk about trying the other menu items, but who are we kidding? It will never happen. Five stars for the only item that we ever order — the mangonada. That said, I’m sure that the corn, cheese, burnt milk, etc., ice cream flavors are great.

So one of the great things about exploring neighborhoods if finding hole in the wall places that have cool stuff… We went to Half Orange to get lunch, and on our walk up to the restaurant, saw a long, long line of people. After we ate, we went to see what it was, and it was a Mexican ice cream shop(there’s a bakery in there too, but we stuck to ice cream) They have ice cream, but they also have specialty desserts. These specialty desserts are where my attention went, and will stay for quite some time… This time we got a Mangonata(mango, chile, lime, mango sorbet, ice and a straw covered in mango-chile paste) So friggin good. Next time, I’m going to get a Sandiloca(watermelon dessert). I can’t wait to make it back and try more things!

Ladies were extremely nice and they prepare your mangonada pretty fast! I can see that this place gets pretty busy so be prepared for a bit of a wait. And only reason they didn’t receive 5 stars was because its cash only!

Famous for their Mangonada, I often come in for their smoothies.. Pretty low price for the amount you get. it was a pretty hot day, and I just wanted my smoothies while everyone else got ice creams and Mangonada. Great service and CASHONLY!

Terrible service. Lady was too busy talking on her phone to serve us. People came, waited, and left. Kids had been promised ice cream so we persisted. When we were finally served, she was very quick with the order. But she lost out on quite a number of customers before then. Mangonado was quite good. Though the snow cone part of it was low quality. My daughter’s rose ice cream was tasty. My son had a strawberry raspado and again the ice was very chunky but it was made with fresh strawberry juice. Yum!

Never had a Mangonada but I’ll be having a million more thanks to this place. A mangonada is iced mango desert with chopped pieces of mangos with mango sorbet and a chili salt. It is a perfect refreshment for a warm summers day. The small is $ 3.50, but be warned — this place is cash only. The desert is just tart enough, just sweet enough, and just spicy enough to keep you on your toes. I do wish however it was a bit less salty. The rest of the deserts there are all home made and the whole venue is within a tiny marketplace where you smell the warmth of Mexican pastries. The woman who served us was an angel. I love this place, it is a treasure.

Never in my life have I wished that there were more red lights… more excuses to keep taking my hands off the steering wheel so that I could continue digging in to the deliciousness that is a mangonada from Nieves Cinco de Mayo. Slightly tart, crunch mango chunks + shaved ice + chamoy sauce for rich color + a creamy scoop of ice cream + spicy chili powder that stings your lips = icy, spicy cup of heaven. Thank you, Unilocal, for including this place on your list of must-try Frozen Treats a couple of months ago. I bookmarked it back then, and when I found myself in the Fruitvale neighborhood this past Saturday, I walked into the Fruitvale Public Market and found myself in front of the infamous stall. The woman working there gave me a warm smile as I snapped multiple photos for this very Unilocal review. When I finished, she asked me what I would like, and I pointed to the small sized cup for a mangonada. Yes, I realized what a mistake that was only as I turned left where International meets 1st Ave/Lake Merritt Blvd. with just watered down chamoy sauce sloshing around at the bottom of my cup. :(

This shop goes to prove that you can find good food in any setting. Fruitvale public market is a little collection of eating stalls in the east bay town of Fruitvale. This shop sells artisanal hand made ice cream with 100% natural ingredients. One scoop is only $ 1.50 On a scorching day, I had a scoop of guava, a tropical fruit. The ice cream was creamy and smooth though I could have done with just a little more fruit flavour There were also ice desserts which looked interesting and worth a further visit to experience

Really nice place, it shares its location with a bakery just in case you have a BIG sweet tooth. Excepts only cash. Many different flavors that you can not accomplish in day hahaha. If you go for the Mangonada MANNNN it’s the best one in town. Will come back when it’s a hot day or a cold rainy day.

(smile). Reminiscent of the sorbeteros(ice cream street hawkers of the Philippines) aka dirty ice cream. Cheese and corn ice cream! Jackpot! Kid had the chocolate — tasted more like Mexican hot chocolate. That’s a plus for me.(Smile) The servers were so pleasant and patient. And the prices are unheard of 2 scoops for $ 2.50. Cash only. This place just makes me feel good.(Big smile). Try it — it will turn that frown upside down.

Several places sell Mangonadas(also known as Mangoniadas) but none compare to the ones at Nieves Cinco de Mayo. Served with shaved ice, real mango, mango, sorbet, chili powder(pico limon/tajin), chamoy, lime, and a straw covered in spicy tamarindo. You have the option to choose from med for $ 3, large for $ 5, and XL for $ 7. If you get a large, you will have left overs for later lol IT’S NOTLOCATEDACROSSFROMFRUITVALEBART. To give you readers a better idea of its location. It’s Located across from Citibank. You need to cross E. 12thST. It’s inside the Fruitvale Public Market building. Right above the double door you’ll see a sign that says«Mangonadas» so pay attention if your driving because it easy to miss and be careful not to hit any pedestrians in the process lol Good luck finding a parking spot. ps. The marker location on Unilocal is incorrect.

Have you ever had a Mangonada? Yeah, me neither. I was finishing off my bowl of weekend menudo at Taco Grill when I looked up and saw a young girl carry a tray full of these colorful creations down the street. I didn’t know what they were and was too far away to ask her. Besides, it’s probably not the best idea to yell at someone in East Oakland unless you want to recreate a tense scene from a Spike Lee movie. I just ambled about the Fruitvale Public Market trying not to look too conspicuous when I found myself in a tiny food court with a swarm of houseflies hovering around all the colorful baked goods. Right in front of me was this stand with quite a prominent photo of a Mangonada. Ah, that’s it. I asked the charming woman running the kiosk to explain what it was, and she basically pointed to all the ingredients she uses to concoct one — fresh mango, lime, orange juice, crushed ice, chili powder… chili powder? And a bottle of chamoy sauce(see photo). Sounded like an interesting combo of sweet and savory that I had to try. I ordered a medium for $ 3.50, a large is $ 5. It’s a traditional Mexican treat, but it almost sounds like something invented by a more avant-garde chef at a trendy restaurant. It turned out to be like a Hawaiian shave ice but not as sickeningly sweet. The chili and chamoy gave it a surprising spicy kick that started to lose its appeal toward the end, but it’s definitely worth a shot. I’m more likely to come back and try one or six of the 22 ice cream flavors listed on the overhead chalkboard, some of which sounded quite unusual but obviously not in Mexico — cactus fruit, mamey, rice, burnt milk, even curdled milk. There are also a dozen snow cone flavors(raspados) which appear to be more tropical in nature — hibiscus, tamarind, diablito. Wikipedia says ‘diablito’ is a frog but thankfully it really is a mix of chili and tropical fruit. ‘Nieves’, I found out, means ice cream, so at least I learned something that will help me fit into the Fruitvale ‘hood. OK, maybe not. MANGONADA — 4 stars… a tantalizing shave ice treat AMBIANCE — 3 stars… just a colorful ice cream stand in a quickie food court SERVICE — 4 stars… a very friendly server TOTAL — 4 stars… a bit of Mexico to satisfy your sweet tooth, gringo
