I did take out. Very expensive for the worst Chinese food I have had in a long time. The shrimp had so much batter that it made them 4 times as big as they really were. One third of the bottom of the box was filled with empty batter. Quite unappetizing. Everything had a lot of oil. The egg fu yung was mostly flour and almost no egg. I had to throw it out. The fried rice was ok.

Ordered for pickup — they have really convenient hours(read: open for your holiday takeout), which is always a huge plus for non-holiday celebrators. We got walnut shrimp,(fake) chicken chow mein and mapo tofu. Definitely a pleasant surprise that they have a variety of fake meat options, which is something I will definitely keep in mind for the future! W was disappointed with the walnut shrimp portion since more than half the takeout box was shredded cabbage rather than shrimp, and even though the mapo tofu tasted good, it wasn’t real enough to satisfy my week-long mapo tofu craving.

Great veg option. Fast delivery, tasty food, good fake meat. Eating in the restaurant is even better. Our favorite neighborhood Chinese joint.

The food is still good, and the service friendly and polite, but I have to deduct a star. They are making their portions a lot smaller. Probably to save money or rip us off. Used to get more food for your buck. If you want a vegetarian chinese meal that will fill you up, for to Long life Vegi in Berkeley. These guys are skimping too much.

Great Wall is the best! Quick, reliably delicious and a vegetarian place that my meat eating friends also like. I eat here maybe too often.

We really like Great Wall and think it’s a fantastic value at lunch and dinner. We tend to order Chow Fun and mixed veg options and our friends swear by the sesame chicken. This is a place that we use the condiments at the table ~ we like to add spice/soy/salt to taste on our own plate since one of us likes soy and the other chili and without either things are plain enough for my mom to enjoy :) The veg always feels fresh, the food feels clean and simply prepared and we have never felt weird in tummy or wallet after eating here. The sort of place I trust the answer if I ask about MSG or if a soup is vegetarian. Super mellow service, the kitchen is fast, there has never been a wait, and we enjoy the low-key vibe and vegetarian options.

Great vegetarian find in Oakland! They are open until 9:30pm so a perfect place to get a late dinner. We went there around 8:30pm with a party of 4, and they served us very quickly. Ordered egg flour soup, vegetable chow mein, general tso chicken(fake meat of course), and another fake chicken dish. My favorite dishes were the fake chicken dishes– the flavoring and sauces were great! Will be returning when looking for some good Chinese vegetarian food.

Delicious vegetarian Chinese food! Even if you are a carnivore, give them a shot. You won’t be disappointed

This may be the only pescetarian Chinese restaurant I know of and it’s a great place for vegans like me and omni dining companions. They have authentic Chinese cuisine and the fake meat dishes are pretty delicious. It’s always a treat for me to be able to choose from pages of veg menu items instead of the tiny section on most Chinese restaurant menus. You can tell the owners try their best to connect with their clients and the service has always been good. I also really like the décor and how they feature paintings by local artists so it’s a nice place for a date night out. They added a tea room a month ago so I’m looking forward to trying their high tea service.

Our first Chinese vegetarian restaurant and we’re impressed! Ordered the vegetarian beef and broccoli and fish special with garlic sauce. Yum! The fish was EXCELLENT. Service was great too(for a Chinese restaurant). We used a Groupon.

I came here by accident, I bought a groupon, thought about refunding, but decided on giving it a shot instead; boy am I glad that I did. I brought the wife here for an early lunch, we decided on trying the Stuffed Wontons, Seafood soup, Shrimp fried rice, and Mango ice cream, all of which were amazing. The wontons were cooked to perfection and decently stuffed with cream cheese and crab meat, the soup was a generous portion(Feeds 2 – 3 easily), the shrimp fried rice was nice and tender, and the ice cream was divine;melts in your mouth. I will definitely revisit this place, but next time I’m not sharing a Damn thing :)

After passing by this place a number of times, I decided to pop in for dinner last night. I ordered the veggie chow fun and a dish of sauteed eggplant with fried tofu. I was really hungry so I ate all of the chow fun but I’ve honestly had better chow fun from P.F. Chang’s and couldn’t help but wonder why a huge chain restaurant is doing a better job at serving up Chinese food than these guys are. The eggplant was hella soggy and the fried tofu was dry and I wasn’t a fan of the sauce they used. I kept debating if I should go to another restaurant but I didn’t feel like relocating and thought that maybe the food would taste better as I ate it, but alas, I left with a sense of disappointment and even advised the guy reading the menu outside not to go into the restaurant. Maybe I should come back and try the fake meat dishes but I think I’ll stick to Golden Lotus for now.

We popped in here for a late, light lunch since we were in the vicinity. As others have noted, the restaurant has new owners now and we were happy to see that the service was much cheerier than it used to be. Unfortunately the food was disappointing. We opted to share a plate of the kung pao shrimp. Instead of a dish full of sweet peppers and hot chili peppers, we were served a plate of zucchini, a few water chestnuts and a handful of peanuts tossed on top. There was literally no seasoning in the the dish. No garlic, no onions, no peppers of any kind. We added condiments, especially the chile paste and vinegar that were on the table, but sadly, they didn’t make much of a difference. Even the rice was lousy. Sort of tasted reheated and not fresh at all. A disappointing meal. One star for the sweet service and one for the reasonable prices.

My conscience forces me to write this review. I have never eaten here. I will never eat here. Here is why: my office has a view of the back of this restaurant. Every day, I see trays of food — vegetables, fake meat, etc — sitting unattended in the dirty back alley space. I see things being chopped and prepared in this open, filthy space beside the trash cans. The Health Dept. has cited this restaurant for not cleaning its preparation surfaces properly. Perhaps they don’t know what’s going on behind the restaurant, in the alley. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But now you know.

Sometimes confused with other Chinese restaurants on College or similarly named restaurants in Berkeley, Great Wall is definitely unique in the fact that they are a vegetarian’s dream using«faux» meats for everything except seafood, which is real animal meat. Their menu isn’t very clear about this though… I feel like they should hype it up more! Dishes themselves were sometimes a little bit different than traditional(for example, green scallion pancakes have the scallions on the inside), but everything tasted great. Atmosphere, however, is like many traditional Chinese restaurants. Very inexpensive… Dinner for 5 adults and two kids was about $ 60 with tip.

I can only vouch for the vegan food, but i’ve gotten it delivery and in house, and it’s always been delicious. Not the best i’ve ever had, but always 5⁄5 stars and always with fast and friendly service. Plus, you get a great amount of food!

I’m a sucker for fake meat. This is a recent(ie: the last five years of my 18 year vegetarian stint) development. Years ago, I was with a boyfriend at a veggie restaurant and these two snarky-hippie-vegans snottily told a server, «We don’t even want to eat anything that resembles meat because that is part of the problem.» Right then and there, I didn’t want to be like those people. So I seek out fake meat like it’s going out of style. Anyway. Great Wall was introduced to me by a friend who lives down the street. After we ordered take out on a Sunday night, I returned for take out the next night. And again three nights later. Everything I’ve tried is good, the service is incredibly sweet(they gave my friend and I a free sample of their ice cream dessert which was amazing, like Rice Crispies in ice cream — genius) the prices are reasonable, and they are just kind small business owners. I’ve been back(clearly) and I’ll be back.

I’m not sure why I haven’t updated my review since we go here at least every month or two. After our beloved Vegie Food closed after more than 25 years we feel a little lost. China Wall does feel the gap a bit. There was a recent change of ownership. A friend who works by thinks the quality had gone down but we haven’t noticed it. We usually have lunch here. We always have to order the fried won ton and green onion pancake which are so yummy. We usually ordered the«chicken»(gluten) with broccoli and brown rice. Mr Rinky usually orders a e veggie combo. I’ve also ordered the sesame«chicken» or the Mngolian«beef.» Both are satisfying as well. Service has always been quick and friendly.
