I ordered the spareribs with black bean sauce via Doordash because it’s something I haven’t had since leaving NYC23 years ago. It seems to be something that is very rare in the bay area. I was very disappointed that it wasn’t available… And at the end no fortune cookies!!! What’s up with that?

I had the restaurant to myself, but i went after customary lunch time. i was wanting to try the duck soup that i saw on the picture, but opted cute Mongolian beef chow fun. food was good and the beef was tender. they loose a star because they charge me extra to make it wet; i never encounter that before. i will be back and I will be getting the duck soup next time around. The people were nice too. My Mongolian showed no signs out spicey, I had tho add chilli oil from the table.

Mongolian beef was not good, I ad to chuck my meal after forcing myself to eat as much as I could. Nice lad who made the food but I didn’t like it… I eat this dish a lot

This is an old family style Chinese restaurant and a favorite and we have been coming here on and off since my children were young and now they are young adults! Our favorite dishes are Yee Foo Gnap(Duck) wonton soup, tomato beef chow mein, homemade potstickers, and lotus root delight! Lily is the co-owner and we have know her and her family for ages! The sign in the restaurant says cash only but I see online they accept credit cards with a $ 20 minimum. They started using online ordering called Door Dash so you can order your favorite foods and have it delivered.

3.5 stars for the food… Despite the bad reviews, my coworkers and i decided to give this place a try. We mainly came here for the pressed duck as we saw the sign on the sidewalk. This place has been around for decades and sadly, the interior looks it. The waitress/owner is very friendly and we were seated right away… only 2 other tables with people around 11:45 which is sad. The pressed duck is an old school dish which is deep-fried crunchy on the outside, tender inside with a hint of 5-spice powder, cut into squares accompanied with sweet and sour sauce… this dish took a little bit of time(15 mins) but was totally worth it as it was similiar to King Wah(now closed) and Silver Dragon(now closed) used to make it. Sad, all the old school places are disappearing as this is ‘home-cooked’ chinese food. Also, ordered the mu shu pork and house chow mein. Both were delicious and not overly greasy… what i liked about the chow mein is it had the ‘wok’s breath’(basically letting the flame into the wok to give it a smokiness). Mu shu had more cabbage and not a lot of the usual like egg, wood ear(fungus) but still simple and good. Would we return, definitely… the interior is a little offputting and drab but I thought the food was good… even without a living social, groupon or any discounted voucher! Maybe if they opened up the windows it would be a little more welcoming. 3 dishes with tea, a soda came out to approx $ 33.

Pros: The waitress was very friendly and attentive. Our food came out very fast. The lemon chicken was great! It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The price was average but not too much. Cons: The waitress was able to be so attentive because we were the only ones in the restaurant. The food that came out was not what we ordered(but still came out fast and tasted good!) the price was average, but we used a living social coupon. Overall I don’t think this place was as bad as some of the other reviews are stating. Give it a shot! The potstickers were good as was the lemon chicken.

Just horrible food and service. Never a good sign when the place is empty at 6:20 and still empty when you leave. We used a Living Social voucher that was for a three course traditional Chinese dinner. The young lady who served us had food stuck between her braces. Well, apparently the restaurant decided the voucher meant they could decide exactly what we HAD to eat: disgusting and slimy soup, a greasy plate of fried chicken, and the worst dumplings in history with a sauce that tasted like cough syrup. We took a bite of each plate and then left. Worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. Deceptive Groupon voucher. Update: the rude owner wrote to me claiming the Groupon said Pre Fixe in bold at the top. I checked and it doesn’t say Pre Fixe. Lesson learned. Rude ass owners by the way. Go to Little Shin Shin for GREAT Chinese Food and service.

The potstickers and Mongolian beef chow main were great, but not enough beef. Still I would go back and try other plates.

The hub and I agree that some of the dishes here can be less than satisfactory. But we also love many of them. Of the ones we really like, they taste just my Mom’s — who passed away 3 years ago. I do so miss Mom’s home cooking. Peacock’s menu offers many old-fashioned dishes that are seldom seen these days in other Chinese restos like the Pressed Duck or Steamed Pork Cake with different toppings. The disappointments thus far in our research have been with the Chicken Wings(bland and not crispy enough), Beef with Bean Cake, Black Bean Beef(more onions than beef), Shrimp with Spicy Sauce(more sweet/sour) However, we are really happy to chow down again and again on the following: Mustard Green Soup(not on the menu but they’ll make it – it’s very homey) Hot & Sour Soup(a family friend of ours wrote a Chinese cook book based on years of study and research in China and this version is very authentic and balanced) Black Bean Beef Chow Fun Tomato Beef(Yummy) Duck Yee Won Ton Soup(try it if you only know the regular won ton soup) String Beans with Hot Spicy Garlic Steamed Pork Cake with Salt Fish Steamed Pork Cake with Preserved Greens Yang Chow Fried Rice(big portion) We discovered in talking with the very helpful and friendly owner Lily that there is more than one chef. This may account for some of the inconsistent results of some dishes. One time we ordered the Hot/Sour Soup, the Chow Fun and several other favorite dishes to go and they were flavorless without any wok flavor or the right seasonings one expects with certain dishes. The hot/sour soup was watery and bland! We were disgusted and almost never came back. Turns out that night the food was prepared by a different chef from the one who cooked our first few meals. They really really need to get a handle on the lack of consistency from one chef to another. That may account for some of the bad reviews on Unilocal. But when it is good and done right, we really have happy tummies.

Rip-off Alert!!! The coupon I bought from LS claimed that this was a $ 35 value and I paid $ 17 for it. Well the food we got was not worth $ 17 much less the $ 35 because this ain’t no $ 35 lunch that;s for sure!!! 5 pieces Sweet and Sour chicken masquerading as Shanghainese chicken, 2 small pieces of wanton in the soup normally used for serving sauces, small portion of rice and a few pieces of dumplings!!! No wonder we were the only diners there on a Saturday lunch!!! Take your money and business elsewhere in Oakland Chinatown. You can get enjoyable food for the same amount.

This restaurant has been around a long time. This restaurant needs a face lift. The restaurant is old and run down. The food here was below average Chinese food. We had the eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, mixed chow fun and the chefs chicken dish. I have tasted better Chinese food at other places nearby.

If you want to go and get a cheap Chicken Chow Mein lunch and have leftovers for the next day. This is a place for you. Although they are very generous with there portions, the food is ok. To be quite honest, it probably the same quality you will get at Panda Express. However, at least you can sit down and feel you are actually at a restaurant and not a fast food restaurant. Despite the food being mediocre at least you can in and out of there quickly.

Randomly stumbled here without checking on Unilocal first! The place was completely empty at 745−8ish. Apparently they get a lot of business in the afternoon, but when afternoon people go in the owner says they have more business at night?! Weird! Anyways, we walked in and the lady brought us tea, by the time we checked Unilocal it was too late to walk out! We ordered and most of the dishes seemed pretty good, not as fresh, but pretty good. THATRICETHOUGH, was refrigerated over night rice that they reheated(I would know trust me). The lady seemed nice and they do honor their free soft drink for check-ins.

Worst Duck Yee Foo wonton ever. The wonton wasn’t even fried. Womton meat tasted like dough. Curry tomato beef chow mein hardly had any beef.

The last OG Cantonese restaurant in Oaktown. Beef Gravy WonTon, no soup, Steamed Pork Hash, and Egg Foo Young. We want Duck Yee WonTon soup, Sam See Chow Mein, and the staple, Tomato Beef Chow Mein. We miss you Silver Dragon and Yet Wah re Golden, lost a star. However, the family owners are lovely and try to do their best. Sad part is that when we ask about these delicacies above at other Oaktown Chinese restaurants, nobody knows about these dishes.

Had a craving for some yee won ton, so headed to Oakland Chinatown. Was on my way to a restaurant around the corner that according to Unilocal had some. The restaurant had changed into a dim sum place so SOL. I had passed Golden Peacock on the way and looked at their menu — they had the coveted yee won ton. Went in around 2pm on a Tuesday and the place was deserted. Not a single customer, which is a bad sign. Still wanted my won ton, so sat down and ordered it. Place is a hole in the wall, dirty carpet. decent service. Had to wait because something broke in the kitchen. No biggie. Finally the bowl of won ton came out. Looked great. Lots of meat in a thick broth and lots of won tons. Saw a smudge of dirt of the lip of the bowl and wiped it off. Ewww. First dug into the broth and goodies. A little salty, probably too much MSG. But lots of goodies — meat, peas, etc. Bit into my first won ton. First, noticed it was soggy, which yee won ton is not supposed to be, since they’re fried. Then noticed it was absolutely tasteless. Worst won ton I’ve ever had. –1 stars here. Also got an order of Hong Kong style chow mein to go. Lots of broccoli, not so much meat. Noodles were not crispy which HK style is supposed to be. Also tasteless. 1 Stars for the chow mein. Take credit cards for $ 15 minimum but the credit card verification used the only phone line and someone was talking on the phone so had to pay cash. Lame. Nearly $ 20 for 2 crappy dishes. Worst Chinese food I’ve had in a long time. Won’t be back. Lots of better options in Oakland Chinatown.
