Fong’s Cafe

Come here daily for my breakfast, can’t get enough! I wish they had one in my city. I also love their sister restaurant on Bancroft because they serve waffles.
Highlights: all the food is amazing. I usually get the Everyday Breakfast with the Salmon Croquettes (LIFE!) but everything else is good as well
Downfalls: I have had to check my butter twice because it was left out and spoiled, which in turn spoiled the entire meal.

This place is an essential stop for anyone living in the neighborhood, or anyone who wants great breakfast. Friendly customer service from mostly Chinese folks behind the counter and a diverse clientele, mostly African American and Latino. Both times I’ve ordered I’ve been only white person there. Fresh ingredients prepared with care and flavored that are spot on.
I had the fried pork chops with grits. Hot damn! So great. Our kids love their French toast. On a prior occasion I had the «everything but the kitchen sink» hash. Awesome.
If you ever wonder about racism in Oakland’s restaurant scene, just walk into this place and imagine it dropped into Montclair or Piedmont — it’d have thousands of 4 – 5 star reviews and prices twice as high, but the customers would be mostly white.
This place is good fast breakfast food– great as any you’ll find in Oakland. We like Montclair Egg Shop but this has become our Go-​to take out place on weekends when cooking seems impossible. It’s a tight spot to dine-​in, just a counter with stools, but the food is great. Make the effort to get to know the real Oakland. This place is an institution.

Good points:
Opens early. Food tastes great! Customer service is decent. Food is served hot and fresh. Available for pick up/​take out. Conveniently located. Salmon Croquettes!
Bad points:
Home potatoes are sometimes undercooked. Truck stop type diner. Literally. Not large enough for entire family. They will refer you to their larger restaurant on Seminary and Bancroft… Whole different experience!

Went for Chinese food. There isn’t much out that on the menu. That’s Ok, had a link, egg, and cheese sandwich with fries on the side. Killer. Couldn’t finish it. It’s a lot. Excellent.

Usually I get the shrimp and eggs, green onions, mushrooms and rice. But just like the rock says, «it doesn’t matter’» and that is quite relevant with the food here it simply doesn’t matter what you order it’s going to be good. The only thing thing I don’t like is rude ass hood girls coming in with a stank attitude, fucking up my chow time.

Omg the pork chop are so yummy here… it’s a cute little spot on seminary, ryte by my house so it’s convenient, and they are so good with service and food is awesome…

Called for a to go order, very rude and impatient, i simply asked if they served croissant’s and she said no, i then asked about bagels and she hung up on me

The best breakfast on earth! Grits are delicious! One of my favorite guilty pleasures I don’t mind sharing !

Other than the lack of space and the location I recommend Fong’s to everyone in the Oakland area. If hole in the wall dining is what you prefer than Fong’s is the way to go. 2 thumbs up 5 stars

Great breakfasts. I can put my special order in, and they get it just right. Two pancakes, dark, eggs scrambled med, sausage links, with a glass of cold milk.

In the HOOD, hole in the wall, but better than any breakfast spot you can think of. The shrimp-​egg scramble is Beyoncé. Fong’s is everything!

I really love this place. Fong’s is my go-​to place anytime I need something good and comforty. It always felt like home. The workers are friendly and warm. The food is great – especially for breakfast options (my favs were always grits and hot links).
I think it really says something that this restaurant has been around for so long and has stayed consistent. It’s not a glam «foodie» spot where hipsters are going to flock and stand in line to get some signature dish… or where 25-​year-​oldish sex-​in-​the-​city chicks would have their sunday brunches and mimosa… but it’s worth a stop if you’re around and want some hearty bfast. made from the heart.

Breakfast & Lunch. Seems to be the neighborhood place to be. With diner & tables for 2 this place is pretty fulfilling! We went in thinking brunch but then ordered beef broccoli over rice & beef chow mein. I asked for a spicy & the cook prepared our food well. Tasty & a decent portion. We recommend this place as well!

Fongs has never failed me when it comes to a hearty, filling breakfast. This has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. I love their ground beef scrambles, their waffles, and their coffee is really good. Even when they’re busy, they keep the service quick and efficient and take out orders are a breeze. I’m a customer as long as their doors are open:)

Had beef sausage omelette with rice and wheat toast.
My breakfast was perfect and I like how they open early enough to suit my rise n shine needs. If you’re brave enough to search for food in this area of Oakland then you’ll be most pleased with this homegrown breakfast joint.

I’d have given 4 stars if I hadn’t gotten sick… I cant really say the food got me sick to be honest but about 2 hours after breakfast I felt super nauseous.
I gotta say the breakfast was pretty darn good… im really picky about eggs… and they were really good. French toast was really good too.
Service wasn’t really that great. the waitress wasn’t really friendly at all… and its in a HORRIBLE area… but overall a super solid breakfast… I would try it again.

A very random hole in the wall kind of place. The food was very good and worth venturing into the what seemed like a dangerous neighborhood. The place is very small with not a whole lot of elbow room but the food is very worth it I’ll have to say. cash only so that’s a bummer but that’s ok, luckily I had cash on me so there was no trouble. The staff was friendly but a bit blunt but not in a rude way if you get what I’m saying.

I was in the mood for some good hearty grub-​to-​go and Fong’s Café came HIGHLY recommended…

I ordered the shrimp/​egg scramble w/​grn onion & mushroom and grits… and an order of pancakes. It was my intention to get to my final destination before chowing down but the food looked and smelled so good I doubled back home (literally around the corner) and WENT IN!
The consistency and texture of the grits were perfect. The shrimp and eggs were tasty too. I did add some s & p and hot sauce to turn up the taste. The pancakes were average.
Overall, I would recommend this place as a great «call ahead and take out» spot for breakfast/​brunch. I look forward to trying other items on the menu, soon!

Fong’s was buzy the whole time i was there. just counter seating and 7ish tables. place was consistently packed. and the to go orders too.
open only till 2:30. for lunch and breakfast.
eats: everything breakfast special (6.89) with coffee free
–3 eggs over easy, 3 pork links, toasts, and ½ plate hash browns
tasty food, good value, hash browns needed more browing.
food-​4 star value.
notes:
–was mugged around the block over 10 years ago.
–wouldn’t recommend coming here in the evenings.
