Tried the Swiss chocolate ice cream. The portions are pretty good. Parking is pretty good around here Nice and chill place Not much else to say… first impression was that they seemed to have a lot more chocolate options. And the inside looked pretty packed even around 10pm on a Sunday night

Oh, Fentons, my love. Why must you be so far away from my house? And so expensive? Whatever. It’s okay. Your Saddleback brownies and curly fries win over my heart every time. Fentons didn’t earn itself a spot in «Up» for nothing. It really is the best ice cream in Oakland. It may not be the best priced ice cream joint in the city, but I try not to focus on my bank account while there. Most of the staff I’ve come across are helpful and patient. I once tried around 8 ice cream flavors before my friends and I decided on which sundae to order and the waiter was great. He even told us not to order the sherbet because they didn’t make it in-house it wasn’t the best, AND gave us the insider scoop(no pun intended) on which flavors go best in a Saddleback brownie. INSHORT: Fentons is an Oakland-staple. You should go out of your way to check out Fentons, but make sure you bring a few friends to share with because the check WILLNOT be cheap(and their portions are pretty large). Definitely a must-try if you’re new to or visiting Oakland, or even if you’ve lived in the city for years and have never been. If you haven’t guessed it by now, I’d recommend the Saddleback brownie and the curly fries. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Of course the ice cream here is good, but it doesn’t set itself apart from other old-school style ice cream places. I didn’t find Fenton’s to be as exceptional as its fame led me to expect. The Saddleback Brownie was good but the unfriendly service left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Also, parking around here is a damn mess. If I was nearby and craving ice cream, then I would come back. But otherwise, there are so many awesome artisnal ice cream shops in Oakland that I would prefer to try. Also, I found that Loard’s Ice Cream in Castro Valley is really similar to Fenton’s and is way closer to me, so driving 25 minutes to Fenton’s to get that old-school ice cream parlor experience isn’t even necessary.

This is my favorite place on Piedmont. I absolutely love their ice cream and whenever it’s cheat day, you can count on me ordering a burger. I have a soft spot for diner styled restaurants. They’re just so comforting and a great place to go with groups. I’ve been going here for years and will definitely continue to bring people I love here.

I love Fenton’s one of Oakland’s best gems in my opinion! I’ve been here several times and My food choices vary, but it’s all pretty good diner type food! Nothing special but tasty for what it is! The show stoppers here are of course the sundaes, and if you love chocolate I suggest getting my favorite pick the saddleback brownie sundae! Brownie and ice cream perfection! All there sundae options are great and perfect for sharing! And I highly suggest you share cause the sundaes are relatively huge especially if you’ve eaten a meal first it’s an overwhelming amount to consume! But if you’re a risk taker by all means!

Absolutely adorable place where eating ice cream is acceptable at all times of the day. The employees are friendly and food is served quickly. I’ve been here on several occasions and it’s always been lunch or dessert, never both at the same time. The food portions are huge so I’m usually too full for dessert(ridiculous, I know, where’s that dessert stomach??). I’ve had the California Avocado Burger with an order of Half & Half fries. Avocado is always a good idea so I have no complaints about the California burger, which was juicy and delicious. Half & Half contains onion rings and regular fries that were perfectly fried. This can be shared between two people. All of the ice cream flavors are delicious. The toughest decision you’ll have to make is which sundae you want to have first.

Have I really never reviewed this place? wow ok. This is a guilty pleasure of mine. Great big diner style ice creamery place. Large menu with Americana food. And a good selection of ice cream dessert treats too. I always get the black and tan. yum. You can eat in or take away. They even have separate lines if you are just popping in to get hand scooped pints of their very delicious ice cream. I’ve never had bad service. It can get slow if the whole place is super packed but I don’t consider that their fault and I change my expectations. To reiterate, it can get really busy here so there may be a bit of a wait. and trouble finding parking nearby so be warned. Also there are some tables that I don’t like to be seated at, like the one right at the back corner nearest to the ice cream bar. We got seated there once and then knocked about by passersby.

My uncle and his family came up to visit me, and he wanted to take his kids to Fenton’s since he went to Cal too. I tagged along because in my 3 years here, I still haven’t been here; I’ve only heard about it. Although there’s plenty of seating inside, there aren’t that many parking spots in the parking lot. Besides serving ice cream, they also have burgers and fries and other comfort foods. I loved the atmosphere. It’s an old school ice cream shop and the décor definitely reflects that. Since we wanted to eat here, they seated us down and gave us the ice cream menu. It was a little strange sitting down to order ice cream. I got a scoop of the Heath bar. Service is average, but the place is big so it was hard to flag down a server sometimes. The ice cream is served is these really cute glasses with a side of 2 small oatmeal cookies. The ice cream isn’t overly sweet, which is good, but there isn’t anything particularly special about it. Fenton’s is more of a touristy spot, where you go to check out, since Up was filmed here, but not really a place you would go back for the ice cream.

I came here with my boyfriend’s family and it was pretty busy. The host told us that there was a little bit of a wait. We decided to check out what flavored ice cream they have. I stood there and watched the family sample different ice cream flavors. The worker helping us out looked mean and annoyed. It was the family’s first time being there, so of course they were going to sample the flavors. After each person(party of 5) sampled something, he asked, «Are you going to order togo? Because this is for togo only.» How rude is that? He had no one other customer. We were not going to ask for samples when we’re sitting down. A bit ridiculous. After we sat down, I noticed that he never once smiled. He’s an angry, mean, and rude worker. He shouldn’t work at a place with happy little children. Manager, please teach your worker some customer service or put him at a position where he doesn’t deal with customers. He makes Fenton’s look bad. After we sat down, our experience was much better. Our server was very friendly. The manager and server brought out the sundaes and sang happy birthday to the birthday boys. It was a fun experience. The crab salad sandwich was excellent! The appetizer sampler was boring though. Tasted frozen. I’ll return when the rude TOGOONLY ice cream scooping worker learns proper customer service and how to smile.

First ice cream place I have been in Oaklandish area since I had moved here. Not a bad place, set up like a diner. And plenty of ice cream. So arriving, good luck finding parking. Like any other place in Oakland/Berkeley. But once you walk in you will have to wait as well. The place does get busy, very popular. When I sat, I didn’t expect there to be a menu. But they are basically a full service restaurant with ice cream. They had sandwiches and other entrees I really did not pay too much attention to, since I was there for ice cream. You can’t go wrong, ice cream is awesome anywhere you go of course. I had a caramel banana split and was delicious. Will return some day.

Oh Em Gee!!! Hands down to this Ice cream shop/restaurant. We were told that Fenton’s used to be just an ice cream shop. But it’s pretty neat that they’re a restaurant now. They have: Salad Sandwiches hotdogs breakfast Burgers And of course: Tons of Ice cream One of a favorite Ice cream now is the Banana Special. It is a banana split ice cream, comes with usual strawberry ice cream with strawberry sauce and the fruit, chocolate comes with chocolate syrup and vanilla comes with pineapple sauce with the fruit too. Whip cream, sprinkled with almonds and a cherry on top. Comes is two sizes. Big ones is good for 4 – 5 people. And the junior size is for 2−3people. They have their private parking lot too. If full, street parking is an option too. Definitely will come back!!!

This is ice cream heaven! Not to mention, it’s mentioned in the animated film, Up, making it a huge tourist and film buff attraction. The food here is very average but the ice cream is amazing. There are so many flavors, so many combinations, and so many ways of eating it — pie shake, sundae, cone. The best flavors are heath bar and toasted almond. Heath bar is light but creamy, containing real heath bar bits within it, adding a crunchy texture to the dessert. The toasted almond is unlike any other flavor I’ve ever tried. The almond aroma will hit you in the face, in a really good way. It’s addicting and unique. I’ve tried the three ice cream flavor sundae with a friend, and it was humongous. It was difficult to finish but definitely delicious. The caramel sauce is to die for. You can request it hot on the side, and douse it over your ice cream at your own pace. For the little ones, you can ask for a cute Fenton’s hat, similar to those at In N Out, to take home.

After seeing this place on tv I knew I had to give it a try! Parking near this place is a nightmare, however that factor does not weigh into my 2 star decision. I’ve walked two miles for 5 star food service before! Got seats right away! My son and wife ordered a black and tan and I ordered a Cobb salad(dairy free diet.) My wife is a leatherbys black and tan fanatic, needless to say she was not impressed with fentons flavor. The caramel was really gritty(I tried it as well) she said the chocolate was almost bitter. 5 minutes after they finished their ice cream, my Cobb salad has still not arrived. I kept asking about. Finally I asked my waitress to cancel the order. She said she would. Then came back three minutes later and tried to get me to take it by guilt telling me that it was going to be thrown out if I didn’t eat it. Ummm I’m sorry. My family is ready to go now. If you know your ice cream takes three minutes to make and your salad takes 23 minutes… Maybe you should delay making the ice cream till the meals are closer to being ready. Doubtful I’d come back On a positive note, by looks alone the food looked delicious.

Now I know what all of the fuss is about. Located in the heart of Piedmont, Fenton’s is the Leatherby’s of Oakland with a lot more eclectic history. If you’ve ever seen Pixar’s ‘Up’, Fenton’s Creamery makes a cameo at the end in a scene with the old man, young boy and bod seating outside while enjoying an ice cream. That particular scene is actually famed and on the wall near the windowed area, where you can watch employees make ice cream from scratch. Some of my family and I decided to come here(my boys and my first visit) on a Saturday afternoon, after the boys and I spent time in SF earlier for a race. We arrived just in time, as the line was already starting to form from both entrances. My sister-in-law put our name down as soon as we arrived, and we were seated in the main area not even 10 minutes later. Inside was bustling was patrons and the lines outside continued to grow. We were greated by our waiter shortly after arriving and given several main menus along with the dessert menus. On top of their delicious desserts, Fenton’s has a large selection of meals to choose from. My boys weren’t very hungry since they’d had lunch so they looked at the desserts while the adults looked over the meals. My brother got the Fentons BLT and I ordered the Steak Sandwich. My youngest ordered a single scoop of chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, and my oldest got a simple scoop of mint chocolate chip! While we waited I looked around at the scenery inside, with most of the walls being adorned with old photos of Fentons during it’s early days. This place definitely has a classic ice cream shop feel. It didn’t seem to take long to get our food even though they were pretty busy, but I’m sure that’s because they’re always busy and are used to it. All of the food looked good, my brothers BLT was huge, I expected it to come with slices of turkey and instead it has a whole chicken breast… not like anyone was complaining. My steak sandwiched looked AND was pretty bomb. I did order no onions or mayo, and there were onions on it. A simple mistake and of the two, I’m glad it was only the onions since they’re no issue to remove them. The boys enjoyed their desserts and when we were done with our meals. My sister-in-law and I both got one of Fentons ice cream creations; I ended up going with chocolate & raspberry sherbert. That way when they mixed you had chocolate raspberry! OVERALL: Great place, the wait wasn’t long. And the food and ice cream was really good. If I’m ever in Piedmont again and have a sweet tooth, I’d definitely come here again!

When you go to Fenton’s you need to take a really empty stomach! Omg! If you’re on a diet stay home. They will love you, feed you and make you feel like a part of their family. The service is really quick yet personable. Order small food portions so you have room for all of that delicious over the top ice cream. I guarantee you will ROLL out of there when you’re done :) Perhaps a walk around Lake Merritt afterwards is in order. Enjoy one of Oakland’s finest!

Ice Cream, get in my tummy! Fentons Creamery is charming; an old school ice cream parlor with counter seating, your classic non-ice cream hamburger and fries menu, and of course: the ice cream! We walked into the ice cream cooler and ordered a sundae to go(it was enormous!) The ice cream was delicious: one scoop coffee and one of mocha almond fudge. They stop that with whipped cream, a cherry and hot fudge sauce(which they put WAY too much on – disappointing). We were drinking the ice cream by the end and had to stop because we didn’t want to drink fudge sauce. So grab an ice cream hat, sneak a look in the back of the shop to see the product made first hand, and make sure to ask for light on the hot fudge sauce when you’re visiting! AND, if they weather is nice, get your ice cream to go and eat it directly outside the shop on their lovely, umbrella covered patio.

Ice cream coma… But so worth it! The line gets soo long, but thankfully we came just before it started to get too long. So many options to chose from at the end hubs & I decided to share the monthly special, the warriors. We swapped the almond ice cream with black walnut which was extremely delicious. Filled with walnuts, it quickly became our favorite. We should definitely have gotten the junior size because we couldn’t even finish half of it. The portions are very Americana here. Think Texas big… But it’s delicious, oh so delicious. If you’re an ice cream fanatic, like me, this place is your heaven! It’s so worth the drive up to Oakland on a hot…

Went here yesterday and prior to that had not been here for many years. We were a group of 4 and arrived around 12:30PM on a Saturday. The place was packed, not an open table in sight. We put our name in for a table. About 20 minutes later we were seated at a booth by the front window. Our server greeted us promptly to take our drink order and brought back a round of waters for the table within a couple of minutes. We started with an order of hot wings. For lunch we ordered a crab sandwich and a burger. We split the two items in an effort to save room for ice cream. The food was delivered to our table very quickly. And it was delicious! For dessert two people in our party had the mini sundae’s and myself and the fourth member of our party shared a Jr. Black and Tan. The Black and Tan was amazing! I’m not really into almond but the combo of almonds with fudge and caramel and vanilla was excellent. The mini sundaes were a hit too! A fun, family friendly place! And the best Ice Cream and ice cream creations around!

Fentons is known for their varieties of ice cream flavors. You can choose from petite to big size ice cream. Great place to celebrate birthdays and events with friends and families. I do love their menu choices of ice cream, but their food is just ok. Nothing really great about the food we ordered. My friend and I ordered the ½ crab sandwich with a cup of soup The taste of crab sandwich tasted bland and really had no flavor at all. The soup we had was with cheese and bacon. The bacon was over fried and hard to chew on. My friend said her Campbell Chicken Noodle Soup she heats up from home taste much better than the soup she had at Fentons. Ice cream and food can be a little pricey. There is a line by the ice cream counter for those who just want ice cream for take out. The staff are great and had no problem with ordering food. There is not much space for parking in front of store so you may need to look for street parking. There is no dress code and when the store gets busy, it can get very loud inside. They take cash or credit card. Would I come back? I probably would come back to have their ice cream specials, but will try other food menu option next time since the crab sandwich I had was tasteless.

Huge portions of ice cream that correlates with it’s hefty price, ~$ 5 for a single scoop which is pretty normal considering other ice cream shops. I wish they had some way to indicate how large it was. The single scoop was way too much for me, wish I went with a petite. Their ice cream does not specify what exactly is inside their creamy concoctions and it’s so busy there you’d feel guilty if you had them explain to you what was in each of their flavors. I had the coffee cookie dream(coffee ice cream with Oreo & cookie dough) — the cookie dough tasted like playdoh to me and I spit out the cookie dough pieces. The rest of it was good. Don’t take my word on it though as it seems it’s a pretty popular flavor so you should probably sample it first. If I wasn’t on a time crunch and they didn’t have such a long wait, I would have liked to dine in and have a take on one of their sundaes or other sweet treats.

A very popular dessert spot, and wasn’t aware also it was famous from the movie Up! That being said, the ice cream here is very good and the portions are enormous! You do have the options to get normal reasonable sizes but what fun would that be. The atmosphere is perfect for an ice cream parlor, the service is extremely quick for how crowded they were and food came out very quickly. Would recommend the place for everyone trying to crave their sundae needs.

Reasons for why this is the best meal ever? Ready, set, go! Fried goodness + sugary concoctions + family-owned values + classic ice creamery + vintage vibes = SIMPLYDABESTEST Fentons offers some of the most phenomenal ice cream in the Bay Area. Their food menu is pretty decent too. This is my dream meal — indulging in crackling fries and sweet sundaes. Life doesn’t get any better than that.(We’ll worry about the diabetes and high blood pressure later.) Not to mention, their portions are gigantic! On my most recent trips, I’ve fallen hard for their curly fries. My partner is a fan of their Shrimp Po Boy, and the sweet potato fries do not disappoint. The Po Boy comes with breaded jumbo tiger prawns, mayo, hot sauce, cole slaw, lettuce, pickles, and tomato served on a grilled French roll. The bread was too buttery(for me) but it was nicely toasted. The prawns were tender and crunchy. All sandwiches come with potato chips, sweet pickles, and fruit garnish(AKA a slice of orange). We swapped the chips for curly fries, which I would count as one my top 5 life decisions. These perfectly seasoned spiral fries were crispy and fun to eat. They were scrumptious with ketchup or on their own. Now to the ice cream! My faves are The Saddleback Brownie and The Black & Tan. Yes, these sundaes warrant the«The» because they are that dang delicious! The Saddleback Brownie — a large chocolate brownie with nuts under two generous scoops of ice cream flavor(s) of your choice topped with hot fudge, almonds, whipped cream, and cherry. During my last visit, I went with vanilla and mocha almond fudge ice cream. When it first arrived, the brownie was actually warm and chewy. The ice cream cooled it down after a while but that didn’t diminish the brownie’s gooey chocolate excellence. The vanilla ice cream was smooth and luscious; the mocha almond fudge was infused with a rich coffee flavor and accented with chopped almonds. Absolutely delectable. The Black & Tan — toasted almond and vanilla ice cream layered with handmade caramel and chocolate fudge, topped with toasted almonds, whipped cream, and cherry. You need to try their signature sundae. That’s all I have to say. Based on the food and ice cream, it’s a solid four stars for Fentons. But it’s that intangible element that seals the deal for me. This is an Oakland institution that has been around for over a CENTURY. Generations of frozen treat lovers have experienced the magic of Fentons. The customers have changed but Fentons has remained relatively the same: serving its famous handcrafted ice cream in its old-fashioned parlor, all the while fostering a family-friendly atmosphere. The staff takes great care of you. Despite their popularity and stature, they’re not jaded or pretentious. There’s nostalgia, tradition, and authenticity that you can’t find at any other ice cream shop. For me alone, I’ve celebrated graduations, birthdays, and special dates at Fentons. I have literally grown up with Fentons. It’s a cherished gem that holds a special place in my heart. And my tummy.

I’d go with 3 ½ stars. Came here for my Goddaughter’s birthday party, and the food was ok. Typical diner food. I got the tuna melt and curly fries, my mom got a burger and onion rings and we split. My sister also ordered appetizer samplers for the tables which was actually pretty good. I’m a sucker for mozzarella sticks. The jalapeño peppers weren’t that great though. Service is good, but it can get pretty busy and loud in there. Also, parking is horrendous. If you don’t get one of the 10 out at front, good luck.

I’m not normally a big dessert person, but I absolutely love the ice cream here. Admittedly the fact that this ice cream shop was featured in Pixar’s Up! had me pretty excited to visit too. But besides that point, I loved the décor and the old style diner feel that I saw while I was visiting. They even have a picture hung up on the wall of the scene in Up! where the creamery is featured. I had their green tea ice cream, which in my opinion was the best green tea ice cream that I’ve had to date. I’ve tried green tea ice cream in Vancouver B.C. and also in Hong Kong, but I still thought this place was better. Definitely recommend coming here even if you’re not a dessert person. Worst case scenario you get to see a really cool landmark and if you’re a big Pixar/Disney fan like me, you’ll love the fact that it is so much like the creamery in Up!

full house on a cold and rainy Friday night! There was a huge crowd of people in the waiting area in addition to the already full dining area. Went in, put my name down for two people and the host told me it would be a ten minute wait. Then he gave us a buzzer. My friend and I waited outside for 20 minutes and decided to go back to check to see if we were getting seated soon. Turns out my name was crossed off because they called our name already. But the buzzer they gave me never went off! How strange right? The host apologized, seated us immediately and even gave us a booth seat! We ordered mozzarella sticks, fries, and a regular scoop of cookies and cream to share between the two of us. The food came in about 7 min which was pretty fast considering the full house of people that they had to serve. Mozzarella sticks were definitely on the salty side. Had to dip them in a lot of ranch to cover the saltiness. Fries were cooked well. Ice cream came with two cookies on the side(one oatmeal raisin, one chocolate). Very delicious. — Minus one star for the whole buzzer ordeal. — Minus another star for a pretty dirty bathroom. Toilet paper all over the floor, one toilet that was filled with seat covers and an excessive amount of toilet paper.

So it became ours too! Last time i went it was a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty busy but we didn’t mind at all. I mean hello its fenton’s of course it’ll be busy. So i had a half crab sandwich with a salad which really helps if you’re planning on having some great dessert. No matter what someone in my family always order a crab sandwich and a black & tan. But the service can be all over the place but last time we went everything went smoothly! I highly definitely recommend this place!!! I mean hello it’s in Pixar movies!

3 scoops of ice cream shared among two people… Left me in a food coma. Well maybe because I did have all you can eat kbbq before. Anyway! Their ice cream scoops are huge! One scoop is way more than enough for the average person. I ate one and a half scoops and I was laying on the floor and couldn’t get up. My boyfriend and I chose the mocha almond(?), cookies and cream, and strawberry cheesecake. The only flavor I didn’t like so much was the strawberry cheesecake. It had too much strawberry syrup and not much, if any, cheesecake pieces. I really enjoyed the chocolate peanut sauce with nuts on top. It wasn’t watery, but thick and melts in your mouth! Next time, I would only get one scoop, or even half a scoop of ice cream(share the love!)

A visit to Fenton’s is all about capturing the childlike joy of shamelessly loving dessert! With their diner style fare but more importantly their mile high sundaes, you are fully allowed to indulge in bliss. There may be no greater bliss to be had than the red cloud left behind by the cherry in the whipped cream, or by sliding your spoon down into the dish and feeling it pass through ice cream to the gooey subterranean fudge, and the joyful glee of the puddle your sundae forms on the plate it arrives in, encouraging you to savor because your sundae is evolving in front of you. Fentons, my friends, is sexy. 5 of us visited on a Sunday afternoon to smash some sundaes, and it was glorious. The parking lot is the stuff of comedy, enough spots to accomodate about a third of the restaurant space, so you are encouraged to not even try and just work hard for street parking. They are always busy, even at times you might think are weird, so be prepared for at least a few minutes of wait. But don’t worry because once you’re seated, especially if you’re doing the right thing and are only there for dessert, you won’t be waiting much longer. I ordered up their Black and White sundae, which they mercifully offer a junior size for(still PLENTY for a lady to indulge in, and still over $ 10 but well worth it). A generous scoop of chocolate ice cream atop another scoop of vanilla, layered with hot fudge and marshmallow and topped the classic sundae way — whipped, nuts and a cherry! It was a fabulous treat, and perfectly balanced to not be sickeningly sweet. When you feel the call of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, you can do no better in the Bay Area than Fenton’s, a local tradition! Highly and sweetly recommended!

Cute location and history. You will wait to be seated and parking is challenging in the neighborhood, so just be prepared. They have all kinds of diner food in addition to the ice cream. I got a brownie ice cream sundae which was huge. It was full of hot fudge, chocolate ice cream, whipped cream and a 5 mile treadmill run. The ice cream flavor selection is vast. You can get a quick cone to go, or eat at a table.

To be honest, I only wanted to come to Fenton’s because it was the famous creamery that was featured in the movie Up! That plus the fact that Fenton’s is actually a famous creamery in the Bay, makes this place so popular. I’ve usually been able to find a table fairly quickly, but sometimes the service can be on the slower side as this place seems to be perpetually busy(even on Tuesday) First, the portions are LARGE. This maybe because I wasn’t super hungry before I came here, but I think even if I was hungry, I couldn’t finish a sundae on my own. If you’re getting a Sunday, definitely think about splitting it – or taking it to go so you can have at home :) The ice cream is here is quality. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the flavors and you will leave here feeling full and satisfied(unless you do the infamous Fenton’s challenge – then you may leave here feeling a little more than satisfied!) I’m giving this place 4 starts since the ice cream and food were good(and you will leave happy), but I think this place gets too much hype sometimes. But this place is definitely a must-visit, especially if you’re around Oakland! Recommendations: The Black and Tan, the seasonal flavors, and the Toasted Coconut. I also recommend getting an appetizer with the ice cream – something like fries or onion rings. For me the ice cream can be a bit of a sugar overload(and if you eat it too fast, you can get a brain freeze), so having something savory and hot is a good way to balance the ice cream out.

Let’s try this again… sans F-bombs and since Unilocal HQ informed me that my previous review was removed because it relied on or contained heresay. I guess quoting Wikipedia and The East Bay Express is considered heresay… — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – The only reason anyone can give Fentons more than 2 stars is frakkin’ nostalgia. Yea, I said it. Fentons started in 1894, but the flavors taste like the place still belongs back then when people used to ride horse-drawn buggies, rubbed themselves with mercury, and wiped their buttocks with linen. I mean, I used to think Thrifty ice cream was great when I was a kid, but that is because I was a frakkin’ kid. And you know what? As a kid I thought beer was nasty and hypercolor shirts were cool… I was a dumb-buttocks kid(and some would argue I still am a dumb-buttocks). Some Unilocalers tried to be nice by saying Fentons tastes classic. Classic… give me a break. Let’s skip the entire PC nonsense and call it what it is. Fentons tastes old-fashioned. As in Nabisco Nilla wafers old-fashioned. Moreover, their ice cream is overloaded with sugar. As I tasted the toasted almond ice cream I knew that if I finished my giant scoop, my toe would fall off because I would be instantly diagnosed with diabetes. Really, it was so bad that I ended up throwing it away after only a few nibbles. Six dollars straight into the trash. At least they had free parking. My only guess for the high rating of Fentons is due to the fanboys of Pixar overrating this place because Fentons was featured in the movie Up. This was a fact that I found out after visiting the place. Uugh. So, if you like overly hyped and overly sweet ice cream, Fentons is for you. However, if you want tasty ice cream, steer clear of this place. Also, if you want to read about some interesting«circumstances» about Fenton’s in regards to their 2001 fire, go check out their official Wikipedia page, since I cannot mention them in my review.

Fentons is what dreams are made of *heart eyes*. After 3 years of wanting to come, I finally got the chance to and it was everything I was hoping for. I am a fiend for ice cream and will go out of my way for it, so that is exactly what I did while I was in town and while it was raining! Luckily because of the weather, there was no wait but I heard it gets pretty packed on a good day. For it being not so packed, it was extremely loud in there with kids bouncing off the walls on a sugar high. For four people, each of us ambitiously got our own sundaes. I ordered the Black and White which is just chocolate and vanilla with all the fixings and it was HUGE. What I liked most was the timeless taste to it. It can be reminiscent of the ice cream you ate as a child because the flavors are so basic, but so rich. There are so many new ice cream shops with innovative flavors infused with so many things, it’s nice to enjoy something classic after a long time. The bill was ~$ 55 for all 4 of us but worth every penny. We all barely got through our entire portions or only had a few scoops left, but depending on your appetite, it may be best to share and save a little $$$!

The ice cream itself is delicious. The food is like a bougier version of Dennys. It’s okay. But why would you come to Fentons for it’s food. Out of all the ice cream sundaes that I’ve tried my favorite is the black and tan. It has the toasted almond and vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup and nuts. My favorite flavor is the toasted almond. I tried it at other«well reviewed» ice cream shops and Fentons does it best. Most ice cream shops make the flavors too pungent, but I like the way Fentons do their ice creams. It’s good. Real good. But not my favorite. I’m still on the hunt for the best ice cream shop in the bay area

If any of the below apply to you, you MUST make a mandatory pilgrimage to Fentons Creamery: [A] You need to appease children who naturally crave insurmountable quantities of sugar [B] You want to bring your beaux on a whimsical date [C] You are having THAT kind of week at work where Susan is totally undermining you/sending you passive-aggressive emails/being overly demanding [D] It’s [Friday/the weekend/Monday] and you really want to use that as an excuse to «treat’cho self» [E] Your friend just had a telenovela-worthy breakup and you want to get them to a better place via eating their carton of ice cream in a socially acceptable format [F] Your wedding is over, you secured your mate, and can officially let yourself go now [G] You like freedom, equality, America, love, happiness, breathe air, and are a human Irrespective of which reasons above resonated with you, I’ll tell you that Fentons will find its way into your heart one way or another upon your visit. This Bay Area staple(featured in Disney Pixar’s «Up!») serves up generous portions, fun combinations of ice cream flavors and toppings, and also has some tasty American food for those who can’t do a mountain of sugar on an empty stomach. We ordered the«Cookie Connection,» a sundae with a warm chocolate chip cookie under scoops of Cookies n’ Cream and Cookie Dough ice cream topped with hot fudge, whipped cream, crushed Oreos and a cherry, holding off on the marshmallow cream. This was everything the perfect cookie should be and more. The portions were huge, so make sure you look around to gauge its size vs your hunger when deciding how many ways you want to split it. Eat inside ice cream parlor style, eat outside on warm days to feel extra refreshed by your chilly treat, get kids/goofy adults in your group a free Fenton’s cap to wear as a souvenir, or sit on the curb and count the number of red and blue cars that pass by. Regardless of how you enjoy your time at Fentons, have fun with your ice cream!

Fentons is still overrated, in my opinion. The ice cream is good and all, but their food is definitely not worth a super long wait since it’s more diner style. Also, with all the boutique ice cream shops popping up, I don’t see a reason to go out of my way for Fentons. A few of their ice cream flavors are really good, but the rest are just ok or not so great. This time around we stood in line to get ice cream, which is a lot faster than trying to get a table. However, it’s much nicer to sit at a table if you’re getting one of their famous sundaes, which is what I would recommend ordering versus just a regular ice cream. We tried: –Cherry Vanilla: I wish they didn’t use Maraschjno Cherry but the vanilla was good; however, I wouldn’t get this again. –Cream Caramel Almond Crunch: Yum, pretty good. I liked the creamy vanilla ice cream, swirls of caramel, and crunchy almond bits. I actually regret not getting my scoop in this flavor. –Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch(Single $ 5.95 + $ 1 Side of Jersey Malt, ): The sample tasted good, but as a scoop it was just so so. There wasn’t enough peanut butter mixed in, so you tasted mostly chocolate, and I didn’t like the crunch bits as much. The jersey malt also wasn’t as malty tasting as I remember, and I wouldn’t get either again. Overall, this wasn’t my favorite trip to Fentons, and I have to remember to just stick to the ice creams that I like(Swiss Milk Chocolate!) instead of trying to switch flavors every time. The cold caramel is also really good. I definitely will go for a sundae next time because that’s where Fentons really shines. Parking was horrible as usual, and we had to circle for a bit to find a spot.

My husband and I battle about Fentons. He loves ice cream sundaes and I love gelato. Tonight though, I did get a petite scoop of the caramel almond crunch. It was good but I really think that it’s way too pricey for the size. A teeny tiny scoop is $ 4.95! My husband did did just chime in to say how his sundae was excellent. but again it was $ 8.95! Good taste but just overpriced!

Had an ice cream Sundae here last night. The portion sizes are huge and the ingredients rich and creamy. The 2 of us could hardly finish half a sundae. I think my sundae was called«Black and Tan». It had vanilla and almond ice cream with chocolate fudge, caramel, almonds and cherry. I did not see any almonds. And I absolutely disliked the cherry– smelled so much of preservatives that I couldn’t taste anything else. The caramel was also way too much– made the sundae extremely sweet. They are a bit on the pricier side.

This is the go-to spot in the East Bay. We usually go two hours before closing only because that is the shortest line we have experienced(sometimes, still a long line). It’s easier when it is just 2 people because you can sit by their bar area(not that kind of bar). It is a great place for kids, and for couples. The ice cream itself is pretty good. It is super creamy, and the chocolate is our favorite. If you are the type that takes two bites and everything gets«too sweet» for you, then do not get the chocolate. Stick to a banana split and share. We made the mistake of getting one of their«specials» and ended up with 3 tiny scoops in dipping sauce containers. Yes, the cost of it is higher than going to Rite-aid for ice cream, but it’s a nice little spot to just hang out in. Also, if you are sensitive to noise, bring ear plugs, because every 5 minutes, they will remind you that some one is celebrating a birthday.

PRO + get to see ice cream-making machines, the history via framed picture and architecture of building + cream caramel almond crunch ice cream is the best ~~ CON — lots of people, it’s usually so loud here that I have to scream for my friends sitting across from me can hear me — everything is very pricey here — fried food(onion rings, chili burger, cheeseburger, etc.) all taste«meh»
