My family and I will never be back. My opinion is everything that follows– awful receptionists. Total lack of care for patients. They failed to verify our insurance prior to arrival. No one seemed remotely concerned in resolving it. It totally came across as interrupting their social hour to interrupt them. The staff seems more interested in sitting around and socializing, grossly unprofessional. Again, we won’t be back.

Just came here for the first time since my usual eye doctor moved away. I don’t have vision coverage, so I called to verify the prices of everything out of pocket. The prices were very standard for the area, and comparable to what I paid at my last doctor. As a rule of thumb I always waive any optional tests to avoid hidden charges, this isn’t unique to compass, it’s the way it is at every optometrist I’ve seen. If you’ve never been to an optometrist you might get caught off guard that regular health insurance doesn’t cover anything, however, I’ve had bad vision my whole life so I’m used to this, and was prepared to pay out of pocket. Dr. Tan was friendly and knowledgable, and gave a great exam. I’m sure we will continue to visit compass whenever we need an exam.

Dr. Tan is the best optometrist I’ve ever had. He took the time to properly explain my vision issues and create a plan that worked best for me. He is extremely informative and knowledgeable, I really appreciated his thoroughness. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. Our first experience here was one of the best physician visits we’ve ever had.

From booking an appointment to meeting with Dr. Tan the experience at Compass Eye Care is absolutely wonderful from start to finish! I have had glasses and contacts followed by Lasix and have seen many eye doctors over the years and Dr. Tan is top notch. He is extremely knowledgable, keeps up on the latest in eye care and cares a lot about his patients. I have severe case of dry eye and he has helped to greatly improve this issue for me. Thanks Dr. Tan for taking great care of me and my eyes!

This place was awesome. Dr. Tan was the first doctor that didn’t try to push me to buy anything in his store. He was honest with me about not necessarily needing to spend money I didn’t have to. He didn’t pressure me into any tests or procedures. He was really great and made me feel comfortable. If you live in or around Oak Park, this is definitely the place to go.

Being fairly new to Oak Park and asking around for referrals, I had heard such great things about Dr. Tan and Compass Eye Care, and so I was greatly looking forward to receiving quality care for my family. However, I find it extremely unfortunate that they do not accept the vision insurance that is provided to military service members and their families! Really?! The military doesn’t choose which Americans they serve and protect… I just can’t understand why any provider would not serve military families.

If I can give no star for their fees & charges, I would. I called ahead to check for insurance acceptance and coverage for routine eye exam. I was told we are covered so I scheduled appointments for me and my 3 year old. We were told to fill out forms like all first time patients once we arrived, except there was a semi hidden phrase on the wellness check for $ 42/pp(Shame on me for not reading it thru) on the insurance page. Receptionist took my insurance card and returned it back to me without asking what I am in for. I was assuming since I scheduled routine eye exams for the appointment, she didn’t need to further ask what services I am in for. Plus, I told her my 3 year old needed exam for school admission. Our insurance has a $ 35 co/pay/pp, that’s $ 70& $ 84 for not reading on both wellness check up. I ended up paying out of my pocket for $ 243 and they are billing my insurance $ 340 so our total eye exam came out to be $ 583. What freaking eye exams cost that much? My insurance told me I shouldn’t be paying anymore than my co/pay of $ 35pp and of course $ 42pp for wellness. Watch out for this place, no eye exam should cost that much. I will look forward to reporting this to the BBB. Dr. Tan was good but this review is on charges not services.

My family(husband and daughters 5 and 7) has been seeing Dr. Tan for 2 or 3 years and my husband raves about Dr. Tan. I went last week and have to agree, the experience was positive from the time I walked in the door until the time I left. The team is friendly, helpful and treat you the way customers are supposed to be treated — they are genuinely happy you are there and they want to give you the best service possible. The equipment is state of the art and Dr. Tan explains everything in detail, so you know exactly what he is doing and what it means. I cannot recommend Compass Eye Care more highly.

I typically don’t take advantage of vision insurance that is given to me via work. This time, I looked into it and found Compass Eye Care. First and foremost, they are located about 2 blocks from my house. I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses whenever possible. Everything was very easy. The online paperwork was a breeze, the staff was professional and friendly and helpful. My visit was in July 2014 and I thought I posted the review. Well, better late than never. I am glad I found a great eye doctor!

Dr. Tan and his team are extremely professional and thorough in the work they do. My family just switched over to his office, as it was closer to home and were extremely impressed with our visits. Dr. Tan has a passion for what he does and you can tell from the moment you meet him. He will walk you through every part of the exam and truly wants to help. Mark was also great with helping me choose a pair of glasses; honest and mindful of my budget. Two thumbs up for this business!

I have been with Compass for quite a few years now and have been consistently impressed. If you are looking for an optometrist, make an appointment with Dr. Tan. If you just feel like killing time online, keep looking at other reviews and thinking about it for a while. That is, if you have that time to waste. My first eye doctor experiences were with a great local eye doctor who was thorough and attentive. However, he retired and his sons took over the practice and moved it to River Forest. There, I got to experience the worst of assembly-line medicine — moving from room to room and finally spending ~5 minutes with the doctor near the end of my visit. That miserable experience led me to look for a new eye doctor. As I moved around the country, I tried different doctors here and there. There were some pretty good ones. When I moved back home to Oak Park, I happened across Compass. Their friendliness, professionalism, and attentiveness exceed that of any eye doctor(and many other doctors) I’ve seen. The offices are clean and welcoming. Dr. Tan takes the time to thoroughly explain everything he does and what he finds. He truly has the heart of a teacher. I’ve since recommended Dr. Tan to other family members who have been equally pleased with the quality of his care.

Great Optometrist! Not to mention the staff, very friendly and courteous. The eye exam was the most thorough and well explained exam I have ever had in all my years of going to the optometrist. Dr. Tan really knows what he’s doing, great doctor! I went in with my three boys and the staff were very accomadating and they didn’t seem annoyed that three very active boys were busy exploring. I have already mentioned Compass Eye Care to several people and will continue to reccommed this optometrist. Thank You for making us feel so welcome! :)

I’ve used Compass for the last year and have excellent experiences with them every single time. They have very prompt scheduling which means you don’t sit around waiting for Dr. Tan. I wish all doctor’s offices ran this smoothly! Dr. Tan is great – a really kind, genuine guy. He’s easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and explains things well. I have a astigmatism that requires a specially formed contact lens. Dr. Tan helped me choose a «hybrid» hard-soft lens that’s hands down the best I’ve ever had. I’d recommend these guys to anyone.

It took me YEARS to find a great optometrist and Dr. Tan is it! It is always a pleasant and informative experience to come in for an annual visit. The staff, with whom I interact on a more regular basis, are incredibly pleasant and helpful! It is always easy to get an appointment, get my glasses adjusted, or order contacts. And as other reviewers have written, you don’t have to brace yourself for the sales pitch at the end of a visit; there is no pressure to buy anything. I have recommended Dr. Tan to anyone who asks, since he bought this practice, and have yet to hear any negative feedback.

Yadi and Dr. Tan are the best. They are so attentive and patient and helpful. He recently changed the brands of eyeglasses frames they carry; they are a bit pricier, but high quality, and they have a great selection of the latest trends. There is no pressure to buy, which is appreciated. Yadi even changed the nosepads on my old pair while I looked around.

Dr. Tan is amazing! He is very thorough, kind and informative. I have a condition that causes my eyes to be very dry and he gave me some workable solutions to manage my condition. The staff is also very pleasant. I definitely will not be going anywhere else!

Such a great local practice in Oak Park. Dr. Tan is kind, thorough and really took the time to help me out and understand an issue I was having with wearing glasses(fishbowl affect) after constant contact wearing. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The office is clean, bright and modern. Am planning on taking my 5 year old son here for a routine eye exam as well. And with no insurance issues, this will now be our go-to for our family’s eyecare needs. Thank you, Compass Eyecare!

Still love this place and keep trying to convince my husband to switch from his pricey doctor downtown. I’m thrilled that they now have the technology to ultrasound my eyes and skip any dilation whatsoever(I hate anything involving drops and it takes forever for my eyes to adjust back to normal after being dilated) Even with a weekend appointment, I was in and out in a reasonable amount of time and always get a detailed invoice and copy of my script.

I was a Lens Crafters patron since I was a little kid. But then a couple years ago after a visit that my insurance didn’t cover I was pretty set on finding a new place. Fortunately, Compass is within my insurance plan. I have been going there for three years now and don’t have much to complain about other than the prices of the glasses and contacts. Great news though, they give you your prescription without giving you hard time so I am able to order my contacts and frames elsewhere if I want to. They take detailed notes for each of your visits so they can reference what you talked about and your history more quickly and in detail so there isn’t much brining the Dr. up to speed on anything during visits. Overall, the professionalism of the staff is pretty great. They are friendly, helpful and pleasant to work with. The first time I came in I saw Dr. Licup, but since I believe he left the practice I have seen Dr. Tan the last two times I have gone. The prices of their frames are pretty expensive, they have a limited selection of designer frames so if you want variety then this may not be the place to be. Also, the glasses are made out-of-house and usually take a couple weeks so it’s not a place for people that want their glasses right away either.

I hate going to the optometrist. I hate it more than going to the dentist(I actually like going to the dentist). I think it’s something about having to read letters(was that a C, G, or O??), answering questions that seem to have right and wrong answers, and things poking me in the eye. I hate it. After YEARS of having unpleasant eye exams at an unhappy place, I think I’ve FINALLY been rewarded with optometry nirvana. I made my appointment at Compass Eye Care with Dr. Licup(pronounced like hiccup with an L instead of an H) about a week ago. Soon after I scheduled my appointment, it felt like I got something trapped in my eye for HOURS(at least four). I called and talked to a receptionist who said that she would have the doctor call me. He called me that evening and was so nice and patient with me on the phone. Remember — I wasn’t even a patient at that time and he still treated me with respect! I went to my appointment today and was shocked that they had notes about my eye issue! They really cared and took copious notes in their computer system. *melt* Anyway — the space was modern and spacious, yet inviting. I liked the sterile, well-lit atmosphere. I liked the professional, yet personable ladies behind the counter. The casually dressed temp girl(I assume she was an assistant), brought me back to a room on time. She was very friendly and I was digging her fun approach to eye tests(look at the air balloon, read these lines, what number is this, etc.). She took me to another room when she was finished and Dr. Licup came in. He was super smiley(I swear — the man did not stop smiling the entire time!), but sincere. He did all these procedures that I normally find extremely troublesome(e.g. putting eye drops in that make my eyes feel funny) and he made them tolerable. I absolutely LOVED how he showed me video eye displays that demonstrated stuff. He really took the time to help me understand why some people are near or far sighted. The best part is that I don’t need glasses! My other place tried to get me to buy glasses EVERY freakin’ year. Dr. Licup kindly explained why I don’t need glasses unless I want them and what sort of eye exercises to do to avoid computer eye strain.
