John Amico school of hair design

I came to try out the much ballyhooed Five Step for my summer damaged hair. I didn’t really think there was anything out there that would make a difference since I have been bleaching my hair for so long, that I believed nothing would help. So I can tell you from first hand experience that the Five Step was nothing short of a miracle for me. I went from a frizzy, birds’ nest mess, to a sleek, shiny and straight head of hair. It enhanced my hair color by removing build up and gave me a fresh keratin look. The price can’t be beat. Especially when you get it on sale, which they frequently offer. I also like a place where everyone seems like ‘family’ and has a good vibe. Definitely recommend trying out!

I’m extremely ecstatic of my new look! Went in for something different and Alex delivered loyally!!! She is amazing and the instructors that assisted on satisfying my picky choice of color including highlight were great too! I was skeptical on getting my hair bleached, dyed, trimmed, etc considering their prices and the obvious. But Alex made me a believer and helped me trust in the awesome skills she’s acquired at John Amico!!!

John Amico school of hair design is a wonderful place with wonderful people they do an excellent job teaching and doing hair and the atmosphere there is so nice & lively. There really isn’t any other place Id rather go to get my hair cut and/​or colored & especially with their amazing prices JA is definitely the way:)

I understand the school is celebrating it’s 50 anniversary and I am happy to be an alumni. I was a John Amico student in 1971 and have remained in the industry now for 44 years. To date I work with hair stylist throughout the country and I must say that I can tell that many of them have not had the extensive education that I received at John Amico’s school. In this day and age with the cost escalating for beauty schools I hope that people realize that the John Amico School WILL give you the best education available out there. Even though I live in Arizona, I return each year to visit my family and take my continuing education hour (CEU) for FREE as an alumni. John Amico has one of the BEST advanced educational programs for seasoned stylists to be able to go in 1 day a month for little if any cost and alumni for FREE. Every time I go back I learn new techniques in styling as well as an extensive color training. John Amico has been an award winning stylist for over 50 years himself and still is an educator at the school in Oak Forest IL. I just love the family of alumni that we all still stay in touch at his annual convention. I try to get back to that every now and again. I just think people need to know… I am a proud JA graduate.

Fantastic School! Very knowledgeable students that do great work. You can definitely tell that all the students have a true passion for Cosmetology. They are very meticulous in their work and pay special attention to your needs when you are in the chair. The instructors are very on point; they make sure they are readily available when a student needs guidance. The staff is great as well, they make sure that things are handled in a timely manner. The school is a wonderful place to come for services, very affordable and the prices will not break your bank.

I have been going to John Amico since 2010. The staff and the John Amico hair products have totally transformed my hair. I have my hair colored cut and styled too. My hair looks and feels stronger and healthier. I have been given so many compliments on my hair. I can finally say I love my hair. Thank you John Amico for everything you have done for me. And thank you for the friendly stylists and the ladies who work behind the desk and always greet me with a smile. Merry Christmas, Patti

I came in for a wash and blow which no matter who does my hair the staff always gets it right! I’m probably more focused on customer service and the place itself. Ms Cheryl does a speedy check in most of the time. I think there is way too much going on at the front desk. There needs to be a better way to get people in and out without all the students huddled around the front door trying to sign in and get through the commotion and gossiping students. I also got a manicure. Not.worth.two.cents. it definitely it not something they have put much training effort into. No designated space with materials. No colors to choose from. The room looked like an extra room they found to put me in. They should take it off the menu. I watched someone get a pedicure while the girl held the clients feet on her lap! Not professional. Another service they should take off.
Lastly I headed to the bathroom before leaving, I got a whiff of something peculiar in the hallway… they still do what their supposed to do but they need to shape up the place and make some changes. I would still keep them on my list of go to spots. I enjoy going to get good hair care. MGMT should just tighten up, that is not the way a salon would run and they should run it closely to what a salon would be like in my opinion.

I was a little skeptical about getting my hair braided by students but I was statisifed with the experience and results. I paid $ 51.00 for them to cornrow my hair into 2 rows and wash/​deep condition. My hairstylist was a very nice outgoing young woman who has plans to explore the world. I enjoyed the conversation with other students as well. I will be returning shortly to have my hair redone.

I decided to try this place since the reviews are decent but I’ll have to say it is not my cup of tea! The «teacher ladies» were rude! Personally I saw my stylist struggling which I get she’s a student so I didn’t take my frustration out on her but the teacher lady talked and talked but didn’t seem to give any directions, she was a little to distracted engaging in the other students gossip, which I found odd personally but anyway I do not recommend this establishment

I was really impressed with this school. I went on a Friday to get my hair done. The student stylist did a great job and I have been getting many compliments on my hair. She did the job as well as a professional and I paid about $ 40 less. I was reluctant to go because I have issues with my hair but I decided to give it a try after meeting one of the students who assured me that they can do anything. LOL. I must say that it is a great deal if you are needing to get your hair done and are tight on money. I wasn’t disappointed at all. I went on a Friday morning and didn’t have to wait. I was able to be serviced right away.

I had quite the experience here…
I won a raffle at a bridal expo for free highlights at John Amico. I received a phone call telling me I won and to schedule my appt with Mary. I called and scheduled an appointment with her for 5:30.
I came in today at exactly 5:30 and there were 3 girls at the register. None of them had any idea I was coming or how to code the free highlights into the system properly. I stood there for like 8 minutes until someone came and told them what to do. The owner of the place came by, introduced himself, congratulated me on winning the raffle, and about my engagement. He was really sweet. Then I waited another 10 minutes until Stacie came to help consult me for a hair color. She seemed like she was in such a rush so I felt pressured to pick quickly, despite the difficult decision. She was nice though.
Then I was told to sit down and wait for a stylist to come get me. I sat and waited for maybe about 15 minutes until someone came to get me. I will call her Stylist 1. Stylist 1 put her hand out to shake and when I shook it, she did not clasp her hand nor shake at all. It was all very limp. She sat me down and told me that Stacie wrote down the color but that she had no idea what it meant. Stylist 1 asked a bunch of other girls and they didn’t know either. Stylist 1 was really nice but she did not know how to small talk or carry on a conversation. I had told her I won a raffle at the wedding expo and she could have at least asked about the wedding or something if she really didn’t have anything to talk about. It turned out that Stacie was in a very long meeting. So I sat there in the chair staring at the ground and Stylist 1 stood behind me for 1 hour in silence. Another teacher came by to talk to Stylist 1 and asked her «Have you done highlights before?» and Stylist 1 said «Nope this is my first time.» After hearing that… I got really really nervous about getting my highlights done by her. After like 15 minutes, I decided to walk up to that teacher and ask her if I could get someone a little more experienced since Stylist 1 had never done highlights before. Later, Stacie came by and told me and Stylist 1 that she will be doing my highlights and that Stylist 1 will watch.
Stacie was doing my hair and talking super fast to Stylist 1 and the other students sitting next to me, teaching them about what she was doing my hair. Part of her lesson included «Girls, Stylist 1 told her client that she had never done highlights before and was nervous. Then the client got nervous that the Stylist would not do her hair right so the client went and asked someone else if she could have a more experienced person. What could Stylist 1 have done better? She should have come to me or another teacher privately instead of telling the client directly.» This was probably the most awkward moment ever. I just stared straight at the ground, feeling bad for Stylist 1 standing right next to me. Anyway, Stacie did my hair SUPER fast which I’m sure she did cuz she knows what she’s doing; however, I kind of prefer someone to take more of their time and act like they are being careful and care about my hair… she also did not talk to me for the first half but then the second half she finally started small talk with me. I found out she was the granddaughter of the owner.
Then I went to sit under the heating thing for 20 minutes by myself. Stylist 1 checked up on me once and then Stacie came by to tell me Stylist 1 left to go pick up her mom at the hospital. Later, the heat turned off and no one was there so I asked another random girl to please go get someone. I waited like 8 minutes and then Stacie came by to rinse my hair out. She then partially blow dried my hair since I didn’t pay for a full blow dry. My bangs always go to the right which she should have noticed by my hair line, yet she kept blowdrying some in the middle and now my bangs are all piecey in the middle and look weird. The highlights are alright, not that noticeable but that’s my fault since I chose the color. However, there are a looot more highlights on the right side of my hair than my left. I’m going to guess that even though the stylist saw I had a right part, she highlighted my hair as if I had a middle part.
Overall, I thought everyone there was really nice, but I booked an appointment for 5:30 and didn’t get service until 6:50. I felt very neglected and I felt very uncomfortable when Stacie told Stylist 1 that I asked for a different stylist right in front of me. I want to let the owner know I really appreciate the raffle prize and that he seemed like a really sweet guy. I’m giving it a 2 star because it was a kind offer. This is the longest review I have ever written and I hope this can help you become a better school.

I graduated from this school 31 years ago…
I will def want to come visit again… for nostalgia reasons…
After so long… My work has been published Internationally multiple times… and I haven’t lost my «passion» for doing hair…
From the reviews I read here I believe the school is still top notch…
My advice for new students would be to go for the very best… and only show your very best work… learn as much as you can… find a mentor fast… someone who will guide you on this precious journey…
I may consider becoming an educator… I would like to invite any student to «Shadow» me for a day and hear what they need… I have a lot to teach someone.

i went to John amico saturday and i got my hair cut all off and I must say i was scared at first but they made me feel so comfortable there it was a like i was family and i loved that about the school. The service there was GREAT! i will be coming there all the time now. I love my new hair style so much. Yolanda Bishop was my stylist and she was Great.

Like the other reviewer, I went to John Amico yesterday for BKT on natural hair. I saved about $ 250, by getting it done here. Since I went in the evening on a weekday there wasnt a long wait or many customers.
Three girls worked on me (I have very thick hair) so I felt very Hollywood in the chair. They all were professional and friendly. The instructor came by from time to time to make sure that they weren’t making me bald. I did receive a decent consult and instructions on how to take care of my hair now that the BKT is in it and the instructor gave me a nice trim. My hair looks good, feels soft and has lots of swing to it. I will definitely return in the future for this service.
